The Rumors Were True - K-5 II, K-5IIs, Q10, 560mm, 18-270mm, and more!

IMO they have to do it that way. Pentax already has a bulky, high-quality large sensor system. They cannot make FX cameras competing with the 645 system in size.

Last year Ricoh cut 10 000 jobs, moving 15 000 others to areas with larger growth potential. At the same time they bought Pentax (1 600 employees). So yes, I also reckon they mean business. When Sony bought Minolta six years ago it took some time before things started to happen. Their first Alpha was very much a facelifted Minolta.

K-5 IIs.... Highly highly tempting. But do I NEED it ?

I am curious what will come out of Ricoh's ownership of Pentax, and it is not easy to foresee. It has happened quite a lot the six years since Sony bought Minolta. ;)

What made me buy a Pentax in the first place, was the relative compactness of the system and the right features (for me) included.
My friend owns a Nikon D700, still a marvelous camera, but when you place it next to the K-5 - or take it with you on a trip, it is amazing how much bulkier and heavier it is.
So, when Pentax introduces a FX camera, I hope it will be with just those features the brand knows so well - compact robustness and and a sound palette of features. I already got plenty of lenses for it, perhaps a new lens wider than my 31mm/1.8 and then we're ready to go!

About Nikon D800: The Swedish Magazine Foto tested it against D700 (12 MP), in a shoot-out using a Nikkor 50 mm 1.4 G at f/8. The D800 performed a "mere" 35% better (horizontal and vertical resolution), while the theoretical difference should be about 75%. It would be interesting to see the results from a similar shoot-out with the D645.

New Q/K lenses to be unveiled next week?

Agreed, sooner or later I'm going to get the FA 31 f/1.8, even though it is a bit heavy and rather expensive (it's going to be an used copy, probably). I would like a lighter and more compact DA limited normal lens instead, about the same speed as the FA.

I got a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and a Sigma 30 f/1.4 for my K-5, the latter for light weight and low light use. During winter, I find myself using the 30 mm as a walk-about lens most of the time. You lose some opportunities, but gain others.

10MP raw vs 16MP jpeg

You are absolutely right about the raw - i found out myself when I got home to my camera :o
I'm thinking convenience - this is pictures of the band which are to be spread quickly via mail/electronically, I'm afraid I will not have the time to work with the raw files. Not yet anyway - you probably noted I'm not yet very experienced.
Also an issue I want to contain as many pictures as possible on my Mac (320GB harddisk). I'm currently using Aperture3 for adjustments/managing.

10MP raw vs 16MP jpeg

Thanks, both of you. I'm quite comfortable with 16M 4 star jpeg, in these situations (document tours with my band). It is the full raw files that becomes a tad too large for comfort. Then it just struck me, 10M raw, could that be something? I'm a novice in raw processing, so I'm happy for all useful information.

Sometimes space is an issue, and I have used 16 MP JPEG 4*.
Does anyone know how 10MP RAW would do in comparison to top notch JPEG?

Sigma 17-50 or Sigma 17-70

I tried a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.0 on my K-x, but it had problems focusing.
It works well on my K-5, but still I prefer the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 any day. The AF noise doesn't bother me at all, and I doesn't miss the extra 20 mm. The Sigma feels clumsy compared to the Tamron.

What about the actual size? Pentax' slice of the cake is small, but where is the size of the dslr cake heading?

I bought the K-x because it was the camera I felt most at one with in the shop. It was intuitive to use.
So basically I planned buying a Nikon but chose the K-x.

Attended a confirmation last week - where EVERY relative is taking pictures of their young and promising ones - and as far as I could see I was the only one with a Pentax SLR.
However I also was about the only one able to take pictures during service at ambient light (Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 ).
There were loads of Canons and Nikons with some 18-2xx mm f/3.5-6.3 lens put out of business until they got outside.

I bought mine one and a half years ago. I was going to buy a Nikon, but the ergonometrics and intuitive layout of the Kx closed the deal for me.
Together with a Tamron 2.8 17-50mm it is a compact package I find easy to bring with me everywhere (which is mandatory if you're going to take any pictures with the camera :D).

In low light, shooting in B&W (it is fast and easy to change the coulor palette with the Kx) and ISO 3200 returns surprisingly acceptable quality for a entry level camera. I rarely bring external flash with me, and I absolutely HATE the built in flashes these cameras are fitted with.

I ended up with the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. I like the size, and it also seems to focus OK. So now we'll see about the rest...

K-x AF issues with Tamron and Sigma

I got the Sigma 17-70 mm f/2.8-4.0 HSM, so it was this lens I (sometimes) had an AF issue with. How fast it is I cannot remember, my attention was drawn towards it tended to blast right trough focus. I don't feel the Tamron as slow (feel is the key word here), it just makes a bit noise focusing.

I mean - I own a K-x and this rather cheap but still OK zoom lens, and that is placing me in a segment where "pretty fast" is fast enough. :)

K-x AF issues with Tamron and Sigma

Thanks. Could fit well, I remember shooting landscape at 70 mm and rather low contrast it could start hunting even if the light wasn't too low (winter time in Norway so it probably wasn't too good either). Anyway I noticed a significant improvement with the Tamron. I don't mind a bit noise, as long at it is focusing.

That's my impression as well.

K-x AF issues with Tamron and Sigma

The Sigma was noticeable worse than the 18-55 kit lens, while the with the Tamron I haven't noticed problems at all.
Btw I also like the compactness and low weight of the 17-50 Tamron. And I got f/2.8 all the way, which I feel mote than counters the smaller range.

You're about to become rather expensive to me, do you know that?
I take similar pictures on tour with my band. Indoor, ambient light, I often shoot from the waist as the occasion rises. Never flash.
Now I'm using my K-x - with surprisingly good results actually, but you just reminded me about a way to improve on them.

K-x AF issues with Tamron and Sigma

Some time ago I bought a Sigma 17-70 mm f/2.8-4.0 as a walkabout lens for my K-x.
However, the Sigma sometimes has problems focusing, in low light it is much worse then the kit lens.

So I abandoned the Sigma and replaced it with a Tamron 17-50 mm f/2.8, which seems to focus like a dream. It's just as realiable as the kit lens, and also is good in low light.

Is this some "known issue" with the K-x, or could it just be my copy of the Sigma?

You get it in Trondheim as well. I've checked!

How is the K-5 sales going?
Last summer, when asiatic tourists were visiting Norwegian fjords, those of them using slr's surprisingly often had a (vivid clolured) k-x, leaving the impression it must have been selling quite well (or was it just me having a keen eye for it..).

They will sell one to me pretty soon. I've grown almost strangely fond of my K-x, but I'm painfully aware of its limitations.
