Nikon [5] vs Pentax [1]

If the Canon EOS RP is anything to go by, the "affordable" full frame Nikon mirrorless could be just another meh moment. The RP may be cheaper than the R but it is still serious money. And it seems like Canon disabled some features (like 30fps video) to stop it from eating into sales of the R. Rather cynical, that one.

K5IIs Perfect Camera for Me, Except the Low Light Focus Thing, Alternative?

The 77 Ltd with K5 II should do well in low light. Technique can help to overcome the limitations of technology to n extent. I would switch the AF are to the centre of the viewfinder, look for the spot with the most contrast, autofocus on that and adjust the composition. For example, the strings of a guitar are nice and shiny and provides contrast for AF to work. The player's shirt or his face might not have adequate contrast.

Pentax K-x aperture slide knob

Like you, I also have a K-x that is not what it used to be. AF doesn't always work after changing lenses. Cleaning the lens contacts usually clears up the problem. Worse is the cracked bottom plate at the screw on the corner next to the battery door. For now duct tape holds it together, but I have to repeat the bandage exercise every time I change batteries. Some clown on ebay wants over USD100 for a red bottom cover, which I find a little excessive. I can get a used one for about the same money. Besides, my body is black. I use black duct tape as well.

About the only thing I can think of would be to vigorously rotate the knob back and forth. That might revive it.

Another solution would be contact cleaner. Spraying it into the body might end badly. It would be advisable to at least partially dismantle the camera so that you can aim the spray. Doing that seems easy from looking at internet advice but also not for the faint of heart. Not something that I have attempted.

K5IIs Perfect Camera for Me, Except the Low Light Focus Thing, Alternative?

In very low light any auto focus system is facing a formidable challenge. The AF assist light is the easiest solution, but in some cases you don't want it. In street photography you are literally broadcasting what you are up to. At a concert or sports event you will be disturbing the event and people participating in it.

You don't say what lenses you are using. Something like the 18-55mm will be an uphill struggle. At long end you only have f/5.6 to work with. Not ideal.

On the other hand, faster lenses can be a double edged sword. The shallower depth of field creates additional problems, especially in low light. The 50-135mm f/2.8 gets marked down in reviews for focus speed, by way of example.

SMC Pentax-DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED [IF] SDM Reviews - DA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Experience has taught me to leave my F 70-210mm f/4-5.6 at home after dark.

This leaves manual focus. I have a number of old school MF lenses that just loves to play in the dark. My M 50mm f/1.4 and Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 are just wonderful. Even the M 28mm f/2.8 is pretty good. Live view helps to nail focus by hand.

At this point I could add that an EVF is really useful for low light MF but there is not a lot of love for them new fangled mirrorless things on this forum, so I will not say that. ;)

I recently got a Think Tank Digital Holster 10 V2.0 on an internet auction. I am quite chuffed with it, especially for the rock bottom price I paid.

A 400mm will never fit but so what? It swallows just about every camera/lens combination that I have tried. The bottom part has a very clever zip arrangement to make it smaller or bigger.

I will also say that while there are some nice bodies on offer, the lenses don't seem to be that special. Except for the early Takumar 55/1.8, if that is what it is.

I am more of a lens guy myself. Old film bodies, I already have a few of them.

There seems to be a significant price drop on this lens at the moment. I haven't followed the price on these so I am not sure if it is a big deal, but I am tempted myself. Here are some links:

Amazon has it at the same price, with no mention of any price drop. Go figure: : Samyang SY14M-P 14mm F2.8 Ultra Wide Angle Lens for Pentax : Digital Slr Camera Lenses : Camera & Photo?tag=pentaxforums-20&

I am looking for a cheap Four Thirds body to go with a super cheap 14-42mm kit zoom that I won on an internet auction. This is the best I can do so far. Almost. Two. Hundred. Dollars. For a ten year old Olympus E520 that was not that great even when it was new. Sigh....

Digital SLR - Olympus E-520 SLR for sale in Cape Town (ID:416042300)

For about $230 I can get a brand new Canon EOS M10 on a close out special. Or a brand new EOS 4000D for about $280. I wish these internet sellers will just pick up the ringing phone. It is a wake up call. Sigh...

Use your Gear randomly

I don't own nearly as many lenses (only about twenty primes and ten zooms) but I know the angst of picking just one. To liven up my daily commute, I take a camera and lens with me and do some street photography. Not while driving, I hasten to add. I use public transport.

Picking a camera is easy, my Samsung NX1 just rocks for this application. Now I do have three NX mount autococus zooms, but that gets boring. So I use a K mount adapter for it. I have a lot of several prime lenses that can be used for street photography: 8mm fish, 20mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm. After some experimenting I tend to take the easy way. That is my SMC Pentax M 28mm f/2.8 - great colors, sharp, easy to pre-focus, just wide enough on a crop body. What's not to like? The problem is that I tend to get the same shots as before.

Picking a lens at random every morning would certainly liven things up a bit. Great idea. :D

Which one to keep? smc pentax-m 1.4 50mm, smc pentax-m 1.7 50mm or tsmc Tak f2 55mm

This is a tough question. The Tak is becoming collectable. The M/1.4 is great for low light and bokeh portraits. The M/1.7 is easier to focus and very sharp.

I would say keep the M/1.7. It is a great all rounder.

On a strictly financial note, the M/1.7 is probably the least valuable of the three. The other two will fetch better prices.

Almost USD2000 for a dead brand camera? At least there is a 50-200 along with the kit 18-55. And it is fully realized! Wow...

Future of APS-C

Me thinks the days of the top end APS-C camera are numbered. The demise of the Canon EOS 7D might be the start of a trend. On the other hand, entry and mid level APS-C bodies should be around for a while. All indications are that Canon will be replacing the EOS 80D. It even might pack some the features from the EOS 7D.

What the future holds for the somewhat overdue K3 III is another question. Ricoh are probably busy reading the tea leaves before committing to it.
