The annual April Fools' Day FF anouncement ...

Interesting observation Adam!

I will admit to falling for the joke three years ago. However, in the interim I've become distracted and to be candid I think the announcement of a FF Pentax DSLR is too little too late. With Sony on its 4th release of an interchangeable FF mirrorless body and with mirrorless systems gaining more and more traction/attention the Pentax announcement strikes me as anticlimactic.

To me the area where Pentax has an opportunity to be competitive and innovative is in medium format. The 645Z is out of my price range, but I have heard nothing but praise for its capability as a stills camera.

Coffee Lids for White Balancing in a Pinch

When I shoot landscapes I never white balance. However, if I am photographing people I start with custom white balance as a reference (primarily for skin tones) and if I feel inclined I will adjust. I have been known to use white balance to warm up an image. To your point, there are no absolutes when it comes to art.

I also shoot RAW, but I am also a believer in getting it right in camera. My perspective is why fuss around in ACR/LR with white balance if I don't need have to.

I have had a DIY solution that I recently replaced with an ExpoDisc. Yes, it is a more expensive option than a coffee filter, but a worthwhile investment to me.

Poll: You own the K-01. Soon the K-S1 will launch...

In the near future, absolutely nothing. The K-01 is the single best camera purchase I have made. If/when the K-S1 reaches the price point of the K-01 just before it was discontinued I might give it a second thought, but the feature set and "ergonomics" (the unnecessary LEDs on front) are not geared toward a photographer like me. However, if Pentax were to go Fuji like with a concept similar to the XT1, I would be all over it.

Issues with K-01 + DA35 Macro?

Not that it solves the problem if your copy if the 35mm has an issue, but I find one of the advantages of the K-01 to be focus peaking which should improve your keeper rate with manual focus.

I don't think I have ever had my 35mm on my K-01, but now I am curious.

Asking fellow Pentaxians their opinion on this

I am not sure that the answer is as simple as the over exposure activation being turned on. In looking at the image I wouldn't expect the blue sky to register as over exposed. Perhaps some areas in the clouds might be over exposed, but in general it looks like a fairly well exposed image as compared with the back of the camera. Were it my $$$ I would proceed with caution.

Just out of curiosity what is your target price?

Shared a color version of this image some time ago in the critique forum. Thought it would look good reprocessed in B&W. Shot with the K-5 and 40mm DA Ltd.

Excellent work my friends - a tremendous amount of high quality work on display here! I must make it a point to visit and participate more often.

A few more from my black and white phase I have recently posted. All with the K-5 and various limited prime lenses.

Got the opportunity to spend some quality time with my K-01 this last week while on vacation in Colorado. One of my favorite features of the K-01 is focus peaking which I use for really shallow DOF work. Both taken with the 35mm limited prime lens.

It has been a while since I have shared any of my photography. I have been on a black and white kick as of late. All taken with the K-5 and either the 15mm or 35mm limited prime lenses.

Manual Focus: K-01 or Focus Screen?

I own both the K-5 and K-01. With focus peaking the K-01 is a keeper and in some cases I find it superior to the K-5. It is particularly useful in shallow DOF scenarios. I find it much easier to evaluate and make minor focal plane adjustments when using my K-01 in focus peaking mode vs the K-5 in live view.

ND Filters

Sorry, I didn't read all the comments above before posting mine. For the record B&H sells the 77mm Tiffen vari-ND for $150. Below is the URL to the video I mentioned in my first post.

If you are shooting portraits at 10am without some type of light modification (a scrim or open shade) you will be forced to make tradeoffs with respect to DOF, blown highlights and shadows. In those conditions it is really difficult to have your cake and eat it too. If you do chose to add some sort of ND recognize that it will also weaken the power of your flash. Depending on the amount of ND you add your flash may or may not have enough power to act as a fill. A lesson I learned the hard way.

As always my $0.02

ND Filters

I own and highly recommend the 77mm Tiffen vari-ND filter. No material degradation in the quality of the images although I will note that for wider lenses it displays characteristics inherent to all vari-ND filters at max strength (ie an "X" shaped vignette forms on the image). I bought it for landscape work, but you will have no problem opening up your aperture for portraits. I was close to purchasing the Singh Ray vari-ND but quickly switched to the Tiffen which is half the price. There was a really well done comparison of several of the more prominent vari-ND filters from a DSLR videographer. If I can track down the link I will post it here.

Wonderful picture - the tones and dynamic range are fantastic. And, I too agree that Fredric's picture taking is phenomenal and epic. My hypothesis is that he has outsourced sleep so that he can be out taking pictures!

I would not count on Houston Camera Exchange having the K5IIs in stock. My experience has been that they don't stock much beyond CanNikon and the occasional Sony product. You are best to call ahead and have it ordered or order through Amazon and have shipped to your hotel.

That you took photographs of this quality with a kit lens says a lot about both your skill as a photographer and the quality of the Pentax kit lenses. Remarkable!!!
