Another Canon DSLR line dies

They still have the 90D. They haven't updated the 7D is ages (a bit like the K3 line), and they still could I suppose. But I would think that if I was a working pro, the cost of the body is relative peanuts, they want those current 5D users to buy a R5, I can't afford either, so those that can either have more money, or are getting paid to do it. In the meantime, the stopgap is to use an adapter. EVF vs OVF is a debate, but there are pros and cons with both types.

I see Pentax in the same light, it's cool that the K mount is backwards compatible, but when I use most of my lenses, after using my Nikon J1 or Sony, I just cringe at the sound of screwdrives, AF is just part of it. It's probably why I just use the 16-85 nearly always anymore. I don't mind screwdrive as much for shorter lenses, but DC/PLM across the entire lineup would be a real shot in the arm, and would benefit the telephotos the most. Nikon saw that writing on the wall years ago, and updated their lineup.

Every Pentax I've had is faster than the last, but a screwdrive lens is still slow and noisy (glares at the nifty fifty) And I have to guess that people would like to have more DC/PLM Limiteds, like the 20-40.

Nikon budget Full Frame Z5?

It's OK. On reddit, they're trying to say that's a better value than the a7III, which other than the EVF, I'm not that impressed, not to mention that the 7III is two years old at this point, if it wasn't better/same in some areas, that would be sad. The kit lens is for compactness, but the Sony kit lens is a bit better. It seems like a bit between the a7II and III to me, which Costco is selling an II kit for $1000 currently.

The RP is just a mirrorless 6D mk II, so glad I didn't buy one, as it really seemed like Canon cutting corners to get a FF MILC out the door. Where I do like the Z5, is that I always like the Z6/Z7 are very expensive, so this gives Nikon another pricing tier. I personally welcome a competitive C&N.

Reading between the lines of that page/video, it sounds like they're not competing on features, but the 'artistic' aspect and intangibles.

It's honestly fine, the mirrorless market is crowded, competitive, and features just leapfrog from one brand to another. It'd be a difficult place/time to throw another mount into the ring. There's C&N, and they can leverage their technology into hybrid systems, but TBH, who else besides them and Pentax are making SLRs?

If done well, they could be that mini Leica-esque lifestyle brand, just an SLR instead of RF.

Pentax K-3 II successor on September 2020

I'm guessing $1200-1300. $1300 was the launch price of the K3, $1200 puts it in line with the EOS 90D. $1500 would put it with the current price of the D500.

Given current economics, competition, I would be surprised, unless the specs are an absolute out of the park home run.

Camera business May 2020: uh oh

Pretty much.

Even though (knocks on wood), still working here, I'm not running out to spend $1-2k on any camera gear, and with the lack of a strong federal response, some people don't wear masks or do social distancing, COVID will be sticking around for awhile.

It looks like sales plateaued between 2015 and early-mid 2018, and then just started slipping, the pandemic has probably just sped it up; I wonder how bad the bottom will look...digital vs film users can battle it out to whom is more quaint/hipster in the face of smartphones. :(

Olympus will sell their Imaging business to Japan Industrial Partners

I've seen positive news, in regards to the Theta and GR line, nothing is ever mentioned about Pentax in regards to the imaging division. They could be fine, barely treading water, or losing money.

I do see Olympus in Pentax too...so conservative, so unassuming, that most people figure that they're already under. Preaching to Pentaxians on here or dpreview does nothing. If they don't attract new users, they'll lose market share through attrition, ie current users selling gear or dying off. Using old lenses doesn't make current Ricoh money for example, and I can use those same old lenses on other systems, there's no magic sauce in my K3 there, for example.

To be blunt, there's little to no money being made in cameras now, they're all side gigs for bigger conglomerates, but even Olympus is jettisoning off dead weight.

This isn't surprising, like Hoya parting off Pentax, the profitable bits were in the medical side, no one is really buying cameras anymore, and Oly was having a hard time standing out against Panasonic in bodies.

TBH, I have no idea what makes a new Oly body better than an older one lately, they all seemed so similar.

I'm usually not a huge fan either, but the hazy morning sky made B&W editing look better.

A7III, Canon 24-105 L mk I, MC-11 adapter. Marumi 77 mm polarizer.

Still saving my pennies for more native lenses, but good glass isn't cheap, and Sony being on the high end of that to boot. All I have is the kit lens, and a handful of adapters.

Ricoh should revisit K01

For a K02 to remotely successful, I feel that Ricoh would have to completely ace the AF and video features. It's what the remaining market wants. If they're going to try and sell a mirrorless without either of those of two, they're only going to compete against themselves, as the other OEMs are busy improving them.

Also an EVF of some sort, the lack of one is a reason I didn't like the K01 as much as I hoped, even with the firesale price. Personally, I would be against Ricoh attempting a K01 successor, as it's taken them ~5 years to come out with a K3 II successor; they don't seem to have a lot of resources.

Breaking away from full mount eventually led to APS-C mirrorless camera+lens kits that can now be had for ~$500, like the EOS M50 or A6000, which the later is ancient, but still sells apparently. And if really wanting to, even can get an adapter to fit full size lenses. For $1000, people can get an RP kit. Go into that $1-2k range, you have everybody competing with FF and high-end APS-C models.

It's a crowded market.

Seeking mirrorless to use legacy glass on...

No, an ebay special - one of the type where they take a Kiev mount, weld it to a E mount connector, and call it good. It works, but it's sloppy, but honestly doubtful I would spend more on the adapter than what I paid for all my lenses put together. If I had some nice Nikon or Zeiss lenses though...

I think with shipping from the Ukraine, I got the adapter for like $25.

The biggest problem with an ebay special, is that it doesn't have a stop at minimum focus, the helical can actually rotate completely out, and I don't want to lose my Jupiter 3, so just have to remember to be careful. The Jupiter 12 doesn't have that problem with the outer bayonet.

Manual lenses yes, some AF lenses yes, but with caveats.

I have a7III, and I like my m42 lenses with it, as the focus peaking it pretty nice, and a neat APSC crop mode. Nothing that I've noticed as nice as the green button though.

I have the Sigma MC11 adapter, and Sigma claims that it only works with some of their EF lenses, but a 24-105 L seems fine, video AF isn't great though. I also have some Contax/Kiev RF lenses, and even a Jupiter 12 fits. I will eventually get an Adaptall adapter too.

Sony's UI is daunting, and so many buttons, but many can be customized.

The Tamron is old, but assuming good QC, sharp. Screwdriven. No WR. Sigma did have an HSM version, but I think that's been discontinued for awhile.

But like they've both moved onto updated models that will never see the light of day in K mount. G2 = Tamron, Sports/Contemporary = Sigma.

Sidenote: Amazon offers 'unlimited' cloud backup to Amazon Photos for their Prime subscribers.

I'm assuming there is a limit, but I've done ~80 GB of RAW and JPEGs so far. That also requires fast internet and time, but if done in the background, I didn't notice when uploading from my laptop. I still back them up to an external drive, but drives can fail too. As long as I'm paying for it, why not both options.

Although I've had memory cards fail more than drives, and I do not miss the days of Smartmedia and my Olympus C-3040.

Back to the topic of resolution, I recently noticed that 24 MP hurt me, is when severely cropping, and having the wrong lens (max 105 mm), and bald eagle sitting in a tree, a match did not make.

For part of me, it's not just the optics, I really really like my silent motors, which is why I love my K3+16-85 so much. It makes using all my old screwdriven lenses feel archaic.

Pentax is Schrodinger's camera company - simultaneously doesn't matter if they're releasing anything new, but also will somehow grow and prosper within in a shrinking industry, with people using/buying their old equipment and lenses from the 1970s. Or maybe it's the dog on fire meme, going "it's fine".

Example: I don't care much about video on my cameras, although my Sony is way better in the regard, and I've been impressed so far TBH. But at the end of the day, it's a feature that sells cameras, and it's something that reviewers bring up, like whose killing it with 4k, HDR, etc. There are people that solely use a Fuji, Panny, Sony, just for video. It's something that people want.

Canon can sell a 20 MP body for $6500 because it's stupidly fast, Nikon can update the D750, and basically double the price, because it's been updated with features people want, still 24 MP. My Sony is also only 24 MP, but for me, it's stupidly fast, and I can adapt all sorts of lenses to it, m42, Kiev/Contax RF, EF, it's been fun so far.

To that person's credit, Fuji's are designed to look like an old camera. I like the retro look, but every time I see a picture of a Fuji, it's that retro vibe, like an old Fujica - metal bottom plate, top plate, in silver, gray, or black, leatherette grip, 'prism' hump or rangefinder looking design.

If they wanted to do something different, they could've gone down the path of Pentax, like the K01 or their Instax film cameras, but they didn't.

Sites like photo.net have been around since the early 90s, and photography is still one of the most popular hobbies, even if smartphones eat up the market, just evolving into a new form. Sites may come and go, social media may evolve or die (Myspace and Digg vs FB and Reddit), but it will still exist in one form or another as people will still have questions and want to share.

Nothing much better has come along to replace e-mail, although now I get a lot of texts as well related to my job functions, we still get faxes at work, and people use film.

That designation was some grade A trolling by Dpreview, and some Pentaxians bought it hook, line and sinker. They didn't dislike the camera, just weren't thrilled with the upgrade, especially the baked in NR.

And compared to what Canon, Fuji, Sony, Panasonic, etc had produced that year...it just looked very lukewarm.

I looked at it like the K3 mk II or KP - they're OK, but not something I was going to upgrade to from my K3.

The event photographer at the concert I was at last night used a K3...I never got a chance to see up close to see what K-model it exactly was, but did see the 'Pentax' on his strap.

I assumed it was a K3 given the top layout, but the published pictures and EXIF data confirmed it. I was guessing from the lens attached, and also the EXIF, the 50-135, but I also see 43mm listed on one of the pictures, so the 43 LTD as well?

Honestly surprised to see another Pentax out in the wild, but the pictures came out well too.

That's odd, because my a7III is made in Thailand (brand new, made sometime after May as it came with the latest FW). Not that it makes a difference, go where labor is cheaper. Pentax makes their stuff in the Philippines, and as long as the tooling is up to date, eh, and camera failures or lens variation never occur in Pentaxland. In spite of the all the QA/QC, failures happen.

Sony may assemble in different countries, but that would make sense, as I remember when the flooding in Thailand about a decade ago raised hard drive prices, as it was basically a primary location were they were made. Now, I think the manufacture is more varied.

I am curious what the sources are on MILC failure rates vs dSLRs. I'm also guessing they do NVH testing.

I don't find it odd, it's what they've been doing for 5+ years.

The bodies are fine, cool features like WR and SR, big OVF, but they aren't showing a good presence to people outside the Pentax bubble. They can't remain competitive selling the same iterative cameras to the same flock of people that bought into Pentax 40, 30, 15 years ago.

I've taken some photo courses the past year+ here in Missoula, and people are honestly shocked that Pentax does digital. They remember the K1000, and past that, They don't advertise and people don't know about them.

People want fast AF, they want video, they want quiet/silent shutters, they want lenses. Granted, it's a shrinking market for everybody, and mirrorless isn't necessarily saving the ship, but if they don't offer what the market wants...smartphones will eat them alive from the bottom up too, auto HDR, computational photography, instant sharing. The K3 replacement I thought was going to happen looks like 2020, which seems a bit short, with the Tokyo Olympics in the summer.

I just got an a7III on Friday (Amazon finally got me with a BF deal), but I'm sorely frustrated with a Sigma MC-11+Canon 24-105/4 combo. Really nice lens, but I didn't expect the AF to struggle that much from what I had read online (super flaky at 105 mm). The 28-70 kit lens seems to be capable, and both of these samples with the Canon, but it's really hit and miss.

Focus peaking with m42 lenses is real nice though, I can see myself using those more often now.
