My latest and oldest film Pentax camera purchase. Has now had a CLA and fixed the sticky mirror. Not sure why but this feels rather better than my old and original K1000. It might be because the Spot is a black one and they're inherently better cameras :-)

Question for people to who use both classic lenses *and* more modern AF lenses

Yersss - focus peaking is something I've got rather used to on the Sony but to be honest a lot of the time I don't really use it. Turned up full it's a real distraction. I prefer to sue focus mag for some shots. That said I use a 645N and am quite happy with the "focus beep" confirmation.

I will take you up on that offer thanks nearer to when I make my final decision - much appreciated. And yes I have a "sweep bag" for my photo gear ! Fingers crossed.......

I'm not even going to try - I'd be really happy with either I'm not a pixel peeper. Shoot too much film to ever bother. I kinda believe that if I have good/better vintage glass then they can take care of themselves in the main. It's just that internet "truth" circulating that full frame sensors are capable of highlighting problems in older lenses which can't be fixed by the fixing on that going on between new bodies and new lenses.

Hello neighbor (Novato here). Did that weatherproofing come in useful with the rain this week

I suspect you might well be right. I'm currently working my way through the lens reviews but it's also a question where I will use the K1. At the moment I shoot the Sony when I want that fast AF and the guaranteed (mostly) digital quality that is needed for some applications. I use a Fuji X100T when I'm out with family and friends and want no faff. The K1 is probably going to end up being used for landscape, DSLR scanning and possibly some astro. TBH it's been a while since I shot with a "proper" DSLR so I need to re-establish where that FL sweetspot will end up being before I think about more modern lenses.

Question for people to who use both classic lenses *and* more modern AF lenses

I may be on the verge of buying a K1. What am I saying ? I will be buying a K1 at some point to scratch that FF / Pentax SLR itch. And I am inevitably pondering lens choices. I currently shoot film and digital , classic and modern lenses. I have had a Sony A6000 for a few years but only have one modern lens (Sigma 30mm 1.4) and generally shoot classic lenses on it. Suits my style of photography in that I only occasionally need/enjoy the AF functionality. I have other cameras and lenses for other applications.

My question about the K1 is - does it reveal inherent weaknesses in classic lenses which a more modern (? matched) lens will not show ? It would seem an odd decision to buy a FF camera if it was compromised by the use of much older lenses. In truth I'm not expecting that to be the case in most situations but am curious to know what others think - both classic lens fans and full on current generation lens shooters. Are for example late film era AF lenses a good option ?

A follow up - if I was to buy something similar to the Sigma above i.e. a general purpose lens with full integration into the K1 - what should I be looking at. I'm thinking of something around the 35-40mm mark and preferably not mega expensive. I also have a rangefinder habit......

Thanks

I have no high hopes of the more modern (is 1980s tech modern?) cameras surviving that long. They're cheap as chips generally and thus repairs don't make financial sense whatever the intrinsic value of the camera. It might have a high enough intrinsic value to me but there'll be no parts or the people to fix them. As those who are paying serious amounts of money will find out at some point.

I look at my 90 year old Barnack Leica and my K1000 and expect them to be repairable and useable long after cameras from the 1990s have long since ended up (hopefully) recycled.

I would say it "emerges" rather than pops up. I prefer that to popping up and not going back in it's hole ...

Do I really need to have to setup a Paypal account just to make a CC donation ? It certainly seems that way. Selecting the CC option just takes me to CC details and an insistence to create a Paypal account.

Recent auction haul on Goodwill. I was only really after a film p&s and don't really like the more bulky Pentax compacts so this one caught my eye. Just happened to come with an SLR and two (kit) lenses. Just waiting on some batteries now. I suspect they've been in the camera for a fair few years but fortunately no sign of leakage or corrosion.

The tip I got was to work some cleaning alcohol into that area. I had the same problem and a bit of that and some continuous turning of the dials seems to have removed whatever corrosion spots were in there.

ME Super Metering Issue (No suprise) - But Can I trust the shutter speeds ?

I had heard that a dab of alcohol in this area could often help...

yup - switching around the ISO (well probably ASA) away from the 100 setting does seem to generate normal readings. I guess the previous owner left it on 100ASA for a decade or so :-)

- a bit of alcohol and a turning the exp comp dial quite a bit seems to have sorted it thanks. The ME-Super can come to the ball......

It's reading things like 1/1000 at f8 in a dark room. I know I live in California but it's not that bright. Also taking readings with the same lens on Another body - Super Program or a phone app gives what I would guesstimate to be more accurate and expected readings.

The shutter has no problem firing but I'm not sure I'd know - simply by sound if it was firing at 1/250 or 1/1000 . I guess what I am wondering is - if the meter electronic are failing then is it taking the shutter control with it. I can live with no meter but can I trust an electronically controlled shutter mech,

I have an ME Super with what I think is a dodgy metering function - responds but seems to over estimate shutter speeds .

No surprises or shocks there. Question is - I if run it in manual mode can I trust the electronic buttons to set the shutter speeds correctly ? I have film in the camera at the moment so can't check it.

Love the ME Super but boy has it proved flakey. This is my fourth one I think.

For a complete set - $80 are you kidding ? I'd have bought it and I'm not a huge fan of 110 film. Given that the film stock is available I'd have definitely bought it :-)

Pricewise I'd day for a full kit it was a bargain.

Well it's arrived - in reasonable condition and it seems to work. The zoom is acceptable condition but rather droopy - gravity doesn't help. Will have to look up how to fix that....

Eric did the CLA on it a couple of years back. I'm loathe to commit more money to it as much as I love the model - my experience has been that it's not that reliable. Bear in mind that experience first started in the 80s when the camera was still a relative youngster. Now ? Well if it works it works but at 40 years old it doesn't owe me much more.

Er yes thanks for that - you seem to have encouraged me to go out and buy the same stereo adapter - I really don't need any more GAS encouragement thank you :-)

It's due here on my birthday so I suppose that's some justification. Now I have to go and buy some slide film too...

Well if I've put a lowball offer in on a Super Program - if that comes in cheap I'll be able to start looking for a Spot of some vintage :-)
