Those two man are the mahouts, or elephant caretakers. They are ethnically Bunong (a tribal people who live in that part of Cambodia) men who work for the sanctuary. They're with the elephants every day. I believe they're pretty gentle with them, but I also think that the elephants are not truly "wild" — it appears that they've been semi-domesticated in the past, but are now living a semi-wild existence there on the sanctuary.

We took a mini-vacation to Mondulkiri province (Cambodia) earlier this week. The highlight was a day spent at a wildlife sanctuary, chasing and looking at these two amazing beasts. Sixty-five year old sisters, or so we're told. Hope you enjoy the images.

I think the second one is nearly perfect. The first is good, but I wonder if it would be more compelling with and bit more light in the shadows and/or cropped tighter on the top-left — my eye wants to see more of the model in that one. Still, that's a very subjective call and both of them are gorgeous photos.

I've got a 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo MacMini w/ 8GB of RAM and I find running Lightroom 4.3 to be tolerable, although sometimes when using brushes & other editing tools, there is a noticeable lag. I'd say it's acceptable, but I look forward to getting a new MacBookPro in the future to compare it to.

I agree w/ SMF: the 2nd one is preferable, for me. The first one I'd like to see a) with a non-fisheye lens and b) without the blasted power lines messing up the picture, but there's little you can do about that. :-) Still, nice photos.

Stopped by the bay front on my way home yesterday and made the photo below. I set the camera on a piling to act as a makeshift tripod. I'm pretty pleased with the result. Thanks for looking.

Personally, I'll be glad to see it go. I have other places on the Interwebs where I can go and get into political discussions (or verbal knife-fights, if you prefer). I come to the Pentax Forums to learn about & discuss photography. So, I, for one, will not miss this particular sub-forum. Good decision.

I took this shot this morning. We had a break in the weather today, but it was far from beautiful. Still, I went down to the port dock and got several nice photographs, this one being my favorite:

Well, when reviewing an in-camera HDR, if you hit the exposure compensation button, it prompts you to let you know that you can save the RAW data "from this JPEG" (I think that's the language) as a separate RAW file. I don't know if it's saving the HDR JPEG as a RAW, or what, but it gives a nice effect that, for me, has worked as a basis for a nice HDR image, on occasion. It's a hassle, as you have to save it as a RAW before shooting another shot, but it does seem to work.

Thank you all for the kind words and I am glad you appreciate the image.

I took this last September and it has been well-recieved by people around here. In fact, it was selected for the cover of a calendar that a local print shop does every year, which features local photographers.
Curiously enough, this was shot with the K-30's in-camera HDR, but I saved the image as a RAW file and worked from that. I don't generally like the JPGs that the K-30 puts out in the in-camera HDR, but I save the good ones as a RAW file and have great results with those.

Replacement For K20D

Late last summer I upgraded from a K20 to a K-30 and I could not be happier. Would a K5 or one of the K5II variants beat it in certain areas? Undoubtedly, and for the price that should be expected. However, I'm not into video and so I don't seem to wanting for any of the features the K5's would offer. Of course, you cannot miss a place you've never been to, so it could be that a K5 would make me even happier. However, I've not been disappointed with my K-30 in the least. If you go that direction, I don't think you'll regret not spending the extra money on the K5. But I could be wrong ...

I've composed anti-Obama screeds, or replies to anti-Romney screeds, many times ... in my head. But, I figure, why bother actually posting them? It's highly unlikely that people on the opposite end of the political spectrum will be swayed by my arguments any more than I am by their constant illiberal & intolerant rants on this forum. So, I keep it to cameras & let the trolls talk to themselves.

I, too, just moved up from a K20D to a K-30 and concur that it's a great camera. For me, it hits the "sweet spot" — excellent low-light performance, fast focusing, good ergonomics and some more advanced features, but at a decent price. Would I like a K5 IIs? Yes. Would it be overkill? Yes, as far as my finances are concerned. I love my K-30.

Beautiful. Very nice composition and amazing conversion to B&W. If you were to make a large print of it or enter into a contest or something there looks to be some dust on the sensor that shows up just a bit above the rightmost prominence. Clone that out & it'd be perfect.

filling up the gap between k20d and future fullframe

For what it's worth, I went from a k20D to a K30 just last month and I am more than happy. The K-30 is a bit more compact, but fits my long-fingered hand just fine. It's a bit less substantial feeling and a bit lighter, but I noticed no "plastic-y" feeling, at least like I do when I hold an entry-level Canon. I use a back-button autofocus setup, so I'm not able to use the AE Lock function on the K-30, since it has 1 button that is tasked to either AFL or AEL. However, I very rarely used the AEL function on the K20D, so I'm not missing that so far. I love the low-light performance of the K-30, as well as the snappier focusing over the K20D.

So, I am quite happy with this upgrade, but, admittedly, it's a very subjective thing and others will disagree.

Of course, if you're dissatisfied with a product you should vote with your feet/dollars. I'm always sorry to see a user of Pentax leave, but that's a personal decision. Personally, though, I have never understood the dying need that some think they have for what we call a "full frame" sensor. Would it be that much better than the APS-C sized sensor? I'm not feeling it. However, if you are, then you should definitely buy a brand that offers what you desire.

I, too, keep the primary on a Black Rapid, and the secondary camera on a conventional strap around my neck. Granted, I've only done this once, when I shot my first wedding a few weeks back, but it seemed to work for my purposes.
