RAR was the container (RAR is a common compressed file type which is used to compress text or most anything, so not unusual). Only when you extract from this file do you see the EXE content.

We will skip the long history of malicious DOC files. And Adobe is in the dictionary under “Least-secure products ever written”. So danger everywhere…

CAUTION: pentax_takumar_lens_repair_manual.rar VIRUS

A while back, I downloaded from a seemingly-reputable camera documentation site, the following compressed file:

pentax_takumar_lens_repair_manual.rar

This file contains:

pentax_takumar_lens_repair_manual.exe

While not flagged at the time as dangerous, recent antivirus updates are now flagging the file as containing a malicious Trojan.
So this is just a heads-up for anyone who stumbles upon this file.

And to spare some traffic:
--no, don't recall the site where file resided. Was about 6 months ago.
--antivirus is Norton, but file was also flagged by two other virus systems.
--yes, an executable "manual" is a warning in and of itself, so they hid it in a RAR file.
--it could be false positive, but 3 apps say no. I will let someone else run it to see ;)

PENTAX K-1 Limited Silver released

In exchange for a $407 savings on a 9+ camera with grip, the missing silver hotshoe cover (and USB cable that is not included anyway) is easily ignored. I only mentioned this because it's a great deal if you want the silver version.

And this slightly-used camera even defies physics, having traveled back through time:

Per Ricoh's crack marketing machine, TODAY:

"Limited Silver Full Frame DSLR
Introducing the eagerly awaited Limited Silver edition of the PENTAX K-1.

$2,199.95"

I will also confirm not K-mount. A while back a gentleman on this forum was looking for the K-mount adapter for a Sigma 500/8 mirror that I happened to also own (mine was complete--his didn't have half of the TWO PIECE K-mount adapter). Sigma used a nonstandard circular tube to which any number of different mounts OF THEIR manufacture could be attached. None of the dimensions they used corresponded to any other mounting system (C-mount, etc). The only solution was to fabricate an adapter, and that required a metal lathe plus the dimensions of the missing piece I own.
Bottom line--more cost/effort than the questionable image quality warranted. Some times, a good deal isn't. And I'd not want you to damage your K-3 with "kinda-fits" kluges.

With the madman currently in the White House, it isn't clear WHAT is legal here anymore. My wish is simply to survive to visit Scotland again.

I would love to return soon, but my wife spent time as a kid in Hawaii and Midway Island, and insists THAT is the next major trip destination. And I'm old enough to understand that "happy wife--happy life". But I WILL see Scotland (and Wales/Ireland) and the wonderfully-friendly people again, camera in hand.

Two things: this is the only, and therefore best, custom Arca L-plate for a K-3II (or K-3) plus battery grip combo. You can't get a generic plate to mount as securely or provide access to the battery compartment. Second, Mestos does still make these but Rockville Bob's price represents a significant savings over the delivered price from S Korea.

If you have this K-3 combo, THIS is what you want, and you will not regret the purchase. It never leaves my camera.

Love old buildings of this type. Once explored one that had walls papered with 1830's-era newspapers.

And before you ask, yes I did...

Just lay lens on its side w/o caps and put a pen/pencil under the approx center. Then just move the lens left/right until balance point reveals itself. The size of plate needed will depend a bit on the size of your Arca bracket. I use ProMediGear's C60 bracket and PBX3 plate (they offer 1", 3", 6"-- 8") and their quality (US-made) and pricing is unbeatable. The also have some of the nicest gimbals on the planet, but you'll pay for precision you may not personally need.

Perhaps cover it with something round off a gator? Pentax's attempt to impress in this particular fashion suggests only one person in the room got to vote. His punishment should be to use it for street photography in Central Park, at night.

I seem to recall replacing them far more often on my flashes. Current drain is normally inversely related to rated FPS, so it will depend upon the specific drive. If you think you need one, I wouldn't let batteries spoil the fun. And there are rechargeable AAs whose slightly lower rated voltage is usually tolerated by most devices.

For Sale - Sold: Really Right Stuff BH-55 Ball Head with Full-Size Lever-Release Clamp

Any chance that you used this ballhead with a big, heavy telephoto? I like the convenience of the lever plate release, but I've read more than one horror story where the mass of a long tele was sufficient to overcome the hidden spring that keeps the lever "locked", and the whole camera went flying. This was on a similar high-quality Acratech lever-release head and I wonder if this might be a potential weakness of this setup.

Anyone else have any experience, good or bad?

iso and shutter speed balance to freeze humming bird wing

My last tidbit--most folks start with the inverted-bottle type feeder. There is a feeder called the HummZinger that looses the bottle entirely, giving you a much better chance of getting a shot of the bird rather than the equipment. Check out the link below and you'll see the benefit. They have a new HighView model that has a raised perch that gets the bird up away from the feeder. I have a few, and it is great fun to place two of these maybe 30--50 feet apart and watch a single dominant male try to "own" both of them. If only I had their energy and persistence!

You will find that many of the impressive hummingbird shots involved a flash (or two), often with full sun, to bring out the male colors. So you are on your back foot with that shady location. These guys like to make us work for good shots. Get in the sun and 1/2000 with low ISO should do it.

I have had 100% success purchasing absolutely mint decades-old equipment out of Japan. They really respect their cameras. As a result, we can look forward to having a great supply of these silver K-1s in the future, when the carbon fiber K-1 mk9 250mpx monster is all the rage, and K-1s are priced like Spotmatics. Oh, that I live that long....
