What a great report. Thanks for posting. It's nice to see a side by side test by somebody clearly knowlegable.

Did you use continuous focus mode much?

Unprocessed RAW v JPEG print test

By unprocessed raw I meant I hadn't adjusted it myself in any way. Simply opened in photoshop, cropped and printed. It was purely a test to see what would happen. I automatically assumed the in camera jpeg would be sharper.

Unprocessed RAW v JPEG print test

Last night I deecided to see what the difference is between an untouched raw and straight from camera jpeg photograph when printed out. I set my K10D to RAW+jpeg and photographed a book shelf with the camera on a tripod and using self timer.

I was always lead to believe at least in the magazine articles I saw on the subject some time ago that a raw image will look dull, flat and need some post processing before being useable.

The crops I printed out at 200% revealed the raw image to be the same in colour and contrast but sharper than the jpeg!

I opened the images in Photoshop Elements 6 and printed from there.

I've been using raw for a few months now but have never tried to print the unprocessed raw photo.

Has anyone else tried this?

I've found that if you ever have a problem with your camera, take a look at other manufacturers forums and you can bet they've had similar experiences one way or another.
It's very easy to want to throw the towel in. I've been there.

Did I make a mistake buying a Pentax

Hopefully, to put you at ease I very nearly sold my K10D last weekend. I've been looking at the lenses available to canon and nikon and thought the variety just isn't there for the pentax.

I looked at the alternatives and came to the conclusion on monday that there is NOTHING around from anyone that offers the level of features/build or image quality at the price of a K10D. The cheaper canons are beginners cameras and to be honest look it. The nikon I looked at was the D80 which after reading forums I see suffers from hot/stuck pixels. After my initial panic I am really glad I decided to stay with my pentax. It does more than I require and I would have regretted selling it.

I also wanted at some point to get a ring flash which wasn't avaible. The other day I see sigma are doing their ring flash for pentax and pentax have a model themselves.

Things are getting easier for us pentaxians and I intend to stick with them. A recent trip to New York made me realise how good the kit lens is as well!

Hope this helps!

Hi,
Mine works fine but it makes a spring like click when moving back from MF to AF-C. I wish the detents for these positions were slightly more positive.

C++ error with Rawtherapee

Hi,
I've downloaded Rawtherapee but when I try and open an image or even a folder, the windows c++ runtime error window pops up and the programe closes. I have windows 2000 sp4. I've got RegCure but it hasn't solved the problem.
Anyone else experienced this?

I don't get this problem with any other software.

I've got 1.5 gig RAM and a 140gig hard drive.

Thank you

Ashley

I had a Sigma SD14 for a few months. It had exactly the same problem. Funny thing is that whatever camera shows this up , the tilt is apparently ALWAYS lower to the right! Very odd.

It's not just Pentax OR Canon.

Thanks everyone. It looks like a great lens! I'm very pleased with my 70-210 so far so I think the 28mm is next.

Hello everybody,
I purchased my K10D in April. Prior to that I've owned a canon D30, 10D and Sigma SD14.

I'm now trying to stick with a brand so that I can build up a lens collection!

Hopefully this is the one for me. I've had some good results ( well, I'm pleased with them ) with an SMC pentax-A 70-210 f.4 lens I got recently. Apart from this I also have the 18-55 kit lens, an M42 adapter and a 50mm and 20mm prime lens.

I've also purchased Bibble and now try and shoot exclusively in RAW.

I'm looking at getting a 28mm pentax-A or M next.

Thanks

Ashley
