K-mount lenses on Fuji GFX

Yeah I read about problems with Fotodiox frying a couple Sony cameras. I was less worried about this one since its a dumb adapter, but what you say about the tripod mount does give one pause. And, as I said, the K&F adapter does seem more well put together and will be the one I keep. Novoflex was my first stop, but as you say they have not got around to doing a K>G mount adapter yet.

K-mount lenses on Fuji GFX

I just completed a series of quick tests mounting a bunch of Pentax FF glass to my new Fuji GFX-50R and thought I would share my preliminary results here. Not posting pictures because they were all handheld high ISO low quality jpg shots just to figure out which lenses might work on the GFX platform. I did not test all apertures, just wide open, a mid-range or two, and stopped down. The good news is all but one appear to be useable at least in some parts of the range. I was surprised that in the shorter focal lengths vignetting was more pronounced wide open than at the smallest apertures. I will try to post more detailed reviews with pics in the forum as I learn more about how these lenses work on the GFX.

Here’s the quick rundown of what I found:

Near full coverage – mild to no vignetting at all apertures: FA 43 Ltd f/1.9; FA 77 Ltd f/1.8; 85 Soft (original version); SMC-M 100 f/4 Macro; SMC-M 200 f/4; Lensbaby Composer,

Very useable – some dark vignetting in corners at extreme apertures, but easily cropped and goes away as you move away from the extremes: FA Ltd 31 f/1.8; SMC-M 50mm f/1.4; SMC-A 50 mm f/1.7; FA 135 2.8

Somewhat useable – dark corners at all apertures but still has significant useable coverage: FA 24 f/2.8, Laowa 12mm Zero-D f/2.8 (with hood removed), FA* 300 f/4.5, Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 (better at longer focal lengths)

Unuseable – Full circle requires crop to near 35mm form factor – FA 20 f/2

A couple notes on adapters. The prior posters probably know this already, but leaving this for the next newbie GFX shooter that comes along :

You need to enable “shoot without lens” in the GFX menu for them to work. Took me a while to figure out where that was hidden (the Fuji menus are not nearly as logically labeled or laid out as Pentax).

All of the adapters are dumb, in that they don’t transmit any information between the lens and the camera; no AF, aperture control or EXIF info. Through a combination of ignorance, impatience and dumb luck I ended up with three K-mount to G-mount adapters – the AF and Regular adapters from Fotodiox and the adapter from K&F Concepts. Out of the box I preferred the K&F adapter to the others. All fit pretty snugly, but K&F uses the standard lens release button on the Pentax side that we are all familiar with, while Fotodiox uses just a metal pin that you have to press on. The K&F seems to go on a little smoother as well, and is much cheaper than the others. Be forewarned, however, that they are slow to ship and do not respond to most customer inquiries about order status. They did not mark it shipped until after I initiated a refund request, and did not actually ship it until after I opened a paypal dispute. YMMV.

All of my tests but one were using the K&F adapter, though I expect the Fotodiox will perform the same. I tested the Tamron using Fotodiox’s autofocus adapter because it lacks an aperture ring. Despite the name and the hefty price, that adapter does not permit the lens to AF; it just has an extra metal ring that provides 8 stops of aperture control for modern AF lenses that do not have aperture rings. It was shipped to me by mistake after I figured that out and cancelled the order, so it is going back. Being able to test it confirmed that I don’t need it because the glass I want to use all has aperture control rings.

Thanks all. That review of the Laowa 9mm is great (not the least of which because I love my 12mm Zero-D on the K-1). I will be ordering an adapter, and will report back here what I find with my fairly large collection of pentax glass.

K-mount lenses on Fuji GFX

Hey all, just picked up the Fuji GFX-r medium format. There are several adapters available for using K-mount lenses on it and from what I have read in general the vignetting is not bad above 40mm or so. But what I am looking for are real world reports from anyone who has used a K-mount on Fuji G-mount camera ... good bad or indifferent. I hope to use my 43 and 77 limiteds on it (and the 31 as well if I can), but before I buy an adapter I'd love to hear from anyone who has tried any K-mount lenses on a GFX and what their experience has been in terms of ease of use, image quality and any technical problems like vignetting or otherwise. Also, any advice on which adapters are best would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

I got tired of waiting and just picked up a Tammy 70-200 f/2.8 in the marketplace. This of course means that the 70-200 f/4 will be released in the next month or so. You're welcome.

Lensbaby no longer making Pentax mounts

Hey all, just a heads up that if you ever thought about getting a lensbaby now is the time, as they have stopped making their lenses in Pentax mounts. I was poking around the lensbaby website (after seeing their fisheye toy is on sale), and noticed that their search tool no longer lists a pentax mount, so I emailed their customer service and got an immediate response that yes, in fact, they are not making Pentax compatible lenses anymore

Perhaps not a big deal for those not interested in their products, but still a troubling sign of falling demand for Pentax in the market.

K-1 with the FA*24
Posted By EstimatedEyes

I recently picked up an FA* 24 and as others have said it performs well on the K-1. But when I want to go wide, I find myself reaching for my Venus Laowa 12mm Zero-D much more often than the FA*24 ... if you tend to see wide, you might want to consider something in the 12-18 range before you jump on the FA*24.

Like the OP I frequently use the 28-105 as my walkaround and other than the faster aperture I don't find that the FA* 24 gets me that much wider and the IQ is about the same as between both. I am keeping it because I have a severe case of LBA and I do like taking it out with the 31 and 77 primes as a lightweight low light kit.

FA* 300 4.5 lens hood question
Posted By EstimatedEyes

New hood arrived and it fits much better. Still a bit more fiddly than others, but it snaps in tightly in both shooting and reversed positions. In comparing the two hoods side by side, it appears that 6 or 7 of the 8 nibs were worn down so far that there was nothing left to extend beyond the side rail, and the hood just slid off. (There are eight plastic nibs -- in 4 sets of 2 -- on the inside of the hood that lock into the rails on the barrel.) A few of the nibs on the "new" one appear to be in the same condition, but there is enough left on the others to hold the hood in place, at least for now.

Hopefully this thread will help others who find a similar problem. @vonBaloney 's suggestion of finding something to build the material on the nibs back up is probably the best solution if you can't find a replacement. (And if anyone cares to try, I've got a nice looking non-working hood for sale, assuming the fleabay seller won't take it back!)

Doesn't lock reversed hardly at all. Inspected it again last night and while the rails on the barrel seem fine it seems like some of the wheels or nibs on the inside of the hood have worn down, so there are only a few that offer purchase. Having not seen another yet can't tell for sure, but gives me hope that the replacement hood will work better when it arrives.

Thanks Mike. That was exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. The one i got is a lot more fidgety, but I can't figure out why.

I bit the bullet and ordered a replacement to see if works better; if not its returnable so I'm only out the shipping fee. I'll post back here after it arrives just in case someone else faces this problem in the future.

Thanks Adam. I don't have it with me so can't post pictures at the moment, but there does not appear to be any visible damage to the lens threads or locking mechanism, which is what prompted me to ask if this is just how this hood functions. There are no springs or any other active locking mechanism, it just appears to work by lining up the grooves and turning. But unlike many other lenses and hoods with this kind of configuration that I own or have in the past, it does not lock easily into place at all. Without careful attention, it ends up off kilter or loose.

Since the original post, and with constant fiddling, I have found one connection spot where I can make it work (and marked that on both the lens barrel and the hood with a sharpie dot), but other than that it just will not lock easily or reliably in place ... not ideal when working in the field and trying to focus your attention on the subject rather than your gear.

It may just be that that's the way this one works, so hopefully some of the other owners of this lens will stumble over here and chime in with their experience. :-) Thanks.

Whoops. I do appear to have the MH-RBC67. It has no visible markings but looks like the one on most pictures of the lens and I have no reason to believe the seller or a PO swapped it out. So, other than that, the original questions about hood operation still stand.

My mistake in referencing the wrong hood. The PH version was the one I found on ebay when I googled "MHRBC67," then overlooked that the first letter had changed, and lazily block copied from that in writing my original post. The hood (at least the one pictured on the ebay listing) looks pretty similar ... so thanks for pointing out the difference ... and for saving me $59 on a replacement hood that probably wouldn't work either!

ETA: Or perhaps the ebay seller just misidentified the hood.

Hey all, just picked one of these up off fleabay for a pretty good price and trying to figure out if there is an issue with the lens hood or not (the lens itself is optically great so going to keep it regardless). The hood (a PH-RBC 67) does not snap or lock into place, and even when I can sorta get it seated it can slide up or down the barrel pretty easily. Trying to figure out if there is some trick I am missing, whether this is par for the course, or whether its worth buying a replacement to see if that works better.

It does appear to be the correct hood for the lens, with 4 slots on both barrel and hood. I cannot see anything visibly that appears to be broken, just two small plastic wheels around each opening. There are no other visible clips or clamps that I can see in the hood.

Thanks for your help.

Love the limiteds. I've owned or used most of 'em at one point. The DA15 and DA21 were my go to's on the K3 and prior APS-C's; always regretted selling the 21 and getting the 20-40, as for me the notion of zoom and limited just didn't fit. Miss those since I went to the K1. I would love love love to see a 135 FA limited. That has always been one of my favorite full frame focal lengths.

K1 users: what lenses do you use?

Great read, lots of interesting kits here. Been shooting with Pentax for 30+years, and have collected more lenses along the way than I know what to do with. :-)

I go wide more than long, which is what prompted me to switch to FF. My main hobby is travel photography, sprinkled in with a fair amount of long-exposure, abstracts and blur, and a bit of macro work. Mostly landscapes and cityscapes/architecture, plants and animals, and a bit of street work. Recently spent 3 weeks in Vietnam and SE Asia with this kit, which met most of my needs -- D-FA 28-105, Venus Laowa 12mm Zero-D, FA ltd. 31, FA ltd 77 and ... wait for it ... DA 55-300 WR (oh the horror!)

The D-FA 28-105 was my main walkaround lens. Compact, lightweight, and IQ that punches way above its weight. I am continually amazed by the images I get out of this.

The Venus 12 mm was the next most-used lens in the kit, wonderful image quality, tack sharp when you dial the focus in, and pretty true to its zero distortion billing when you consider its 12 mm ... 12! Love that lens.

The 31 Ltd was great for low light and night work, or just when I didn't feel like lugging the other lenses around. Love that lens too.

Did not use the 77 ltd all that much; just did not have as much call for that length, and the slow AF had me fighting with it in low light. That one will say home next time, replaced with either my FA 100 Macro or my SMC-A 135/2.8.

The 55-300 is a gem. Like the 28-105, it always impressed on the K-3 more than it should, and that carries over for the K-1. It's compact, light-weight and extended reach makes it a great addition to the travel kit. (I use it in crop factor mode on the K-1 to turn it into an 82.5-450). It's slow, for sure, but performs well stopped down to 6.3 or 7.1 at mid-high ISO (1600-8000). Sure, the 70-200 or 150-450 would perform way better, but I am just not interested in lugging beasts like those around anymore, given my penchant to go wide. Until Pentax comes out with an f/4 tele-zoom, I am more than happy to keep the 55-300 in my kit, and adding the SMC-A 135 will give me a longer faster option when I need it as well. (If it sounds like I am trying to justify the 55-300, lol I am)

Unintentional double exposures in K-1 mk II?

I have looked and can't find the drive mode in the EXIF data. Shooting mode (Av) shows up, but not the drive mode. They all have only a single set of exposure data (ss, f/stop) which I assume would differ or be n/a if it was a true multi exposure?

Also Custom function 20 is change AF Point Button option. Are you referring to C19 (Enable/Disable Control with lock button)?

Has anyone had this happen to them? Multi exposures when not in multi mode.

Relatively new (<1000 actuations) K-1 mk ii I was up in Yosemite last week and about 35 of the first 40 or so pics I shot came out as multi exposures. I am 99% certain it was not in multi-exposure mode. All the rest of the shots came out fine. I did not notice this until I got back and loaded them up in Lightroom. I was on 1.0 but just updated to 1.02 so maybe that will fix it.
