The Good - The Bad and The Ugly about Pentax

The good...

Pixel Shift
Astro tracer
In body SR
Toughness
Weather sealing.
Lens selection.
Keeps me in the high IQ game without spending the big bucks demanded for competing systems.

The bad,
Lacks AF for some types of sports and action.

The ugly.
Nothing that matters to me personally.

IMHO, going out and learning to use the camera for it's strengths more than compensates for the deficiencies people harp on. The thing is if you use the camera to it's potential, and if you really need something else, buy the something else for it's strengths and you have what you want. The criticism is always Pentax doesn't do everything. But, the things they don't do. fast high speed AF, marketing etc. have nothing to do with overall every day IQ for most Pentax users. But that's a circular argument, they are Pentax shooters because they enjoy the Pentax mindset. If they enjoyed the Nikon, Canon or Sony mindset, they'd be shooting Nikon, Canon or Sony cameras, wouldn't they?

This is clearly a discussion for the Canon, Nikon and Sony shooters among us. They know where Pentax let them down and what they bought to compensate. To have a long list of "bad's and uglies" we'd have to experience those things. I just don't. For me there's a huge "yawn" factor on all those negatives.

But, I pretty much abhor marketing, don't take a lot of action shots. always shoot the lowest IQ possible, find that for the most part stationary images are preferable to action images. You can list all the negatives you want. None of them cancels, "best IQ for your dollar." for landscape, nature shooters. at least in my opinion. Really, that's all I want. I really don't like flash or artificial light, I get decent action images with Pentax AF, I don't need a marketing department to help me understand the value of things.

I'd compare it to my old Sigma 70-300/

Bird-1-Common-Redpoll by Norm Head, on Flickr

I was happy shooting this lens for about 5 years. As an entry level lens to use for a while while you try to get your feet wet feet wet. I'm sure it will do. If it turns out long lens shooting isn't for you then it hasn't cost you a lot of money. But if you get into it at all, it won't be ;omg before you want better, in my experience.

This is the Tamron 300 with the el cheap Tamron MZ-7, there is a little more contrast, but also more sharpness This is a test shot, and also found this combo a little soft for my liking.

Pixel-peeping-White-crowned by Norm Head, on Flickr

The natural contrast is better on mine, but, it's also sharper with more micro-contrast.
That's pretty much the softestI I'll use as a lens.

But if it the 60-600 meets your standards go for it. No sweat off my back. It won't be going on my recommended list.

What are the chances that the DA* 11-18mm will be FF compatible?

My DA* 55 1.4 just needed a shorter 3rd party lens hood. What Pentax considers FF compatible can be somewhat misleading.

It's not about would you cast her out, it's about would you take her in on a warm dry pleasant evening after romantic walk on the beach. :D

Wouldn't cast her out implies she's already in.

I've always wondered about the saying " I wouldn't throw her out for eating cookies in bed." as well. It's not just that one :D

But now I'm just nit picking. Although, if you got nits, it would seem to be pretty important to get rid of them.

This is why Tess suspects I'm borderline Asperger's.

Due to the heavy English influence of the site that has every country ever claimed by England as just parts of the British Empire, Scotland and Canada are not represented. Although a lot of people lump us in with Americans, not English. But I have to admit, I liked the U.S.A. version above best. But I was born in Chicago so I have an excuse. So, why not tell us which one you like so we know how to appeal to your Scottish sensibilities?

The lack of macro has been a great source of frustration for me as well. I almost always carry a macro lens. Not having one means there are a lot of outings i won't take it on. My experience with the adapter has been less than satisfactory.

But how many actually want to do video? That's the question. My answer based on that type of response based on my own experience would be "no one". My answer to the question to "do you want better video capability? Would be "no, and if you can make the camera cheaper by leaving it off, please do so." I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I personally don't think Pentax can compete in video after years of neglect. The question becomes, will the users they get by creating video be more than the value of the customers they lose, because the price is higher. Not to mention, that Pentax has said the biggest hold up for better video is the availability of a new sensor. Now that is a real reason relayed by company brass, not conjecture about what might be.

If you look at it honestly, adding cost for video is a financial risk for Pentax. We've had many here assert that adding video would increase Pentax sales. But, when you consider that any video Pentax could implement cheaply would not be cutting edge, (because no one makes cutting edge sensors available to them, not even Stony) or mature, based on their video efforts so far, it's unlikely they could inspire switchers from more mature video platforms just for video. Personally, I'd just buy something from Panasonic.

People don't seem to understand the pickle Pentax is in because their volume is so low, they have no clout in the sensor market. They get the crumbs.

Like myself, I suspect Pentax follows the philosophy, do a few things well rather than everything half assed.

I think I bought some pants and a shirt in K-mart, in 1963, the leader of my high school band was there. I said "hi sir". My dad asked why did you call him sir? I didn't bother explaining that if you didn't call your teachers "sir" up here in Canada you were probably going to get a beating. :D

I once saw a whole skid of K-30s at a Barrie Ontario Costco. When I went back a month later they wee gone. It has happened. The question is, does Pentax actually make money from those deals, or are they clearing inventory?

I used to teach video, so been there, done that, not interested. If i want to get back to video, I'll buy a camera designed to do video. Not everyone wants half baked video added onto a still camera as an after thought. Right tool for the job and all that.

Ya, I tend to be like that, but when Tess takes the Q, there are times when I wonder why I go through all the trouble. We did a series of landscape comparisons a while ago Q-S1, K-5, K-3, K-1, For what we were shooting, and the way we were displaying it (4k monitor) the Q was just as good as anything. There are other things to shoot, and there are different ways to display images and I could easily devise a test showing the Q to be completely inadequate, but just walking around every day landscape etc. a Q does very well if for no particular purpose other than viewing on a computer monitor or 4k TV.

And actually, the times we've stretched the limits of what we need to print large, we've never actually had a large size print that was unpleasant to look at because of lack of resolution. People might argue they would have looked better with more resolution, but people will argue about almost anything subjective.

Which leads to the question "Should we govern our lives by the standards of the most demanding individuals?"

Or should we acknowledge those standards and go "pfffft ?"

We've known this for a very long time. Interesting to see people exploring the information. There have been much more comprehensive studies where preference of different people within different countries were studied, as opposed to one person from each country.

With the resolution of a K-1, zooming by cropping also works wonders. I get along with my Rokinon 14mm 2.8. I'd like a 20, but ti's not critical. Most of the time, the 28-105 is all I need, and the 14 stays in the bag. That's even more true when I look at the keepers to see what focal length the images are afterwards.

There are just not that many ultra-wide images that stand out.

I don't have the lens, but the comparison images have been self explanatory. I have many times run tests where I couldn't really recommend the front runner, because many other lenses did so unexpectedly well. Not in this case. In this case, living on a pension, I just can't justify spending that much on lens, no matter how much better it is. But, if I suddenly inherit a pile of money from a rich uncle I didn't know about, I'll pick one up. :D

---------- Post added 10-17-18 at 01:47 PM ----------

The site I saw that compared them refused to say which was better of the two, so maybe it's one step below an Otus, maybe it's not. I can't remember word for word but my recollection was more raw resolution from the Otis, but much smoother transitions and a more pleasing appearance from the Pentax.

And actually, I'm still not impressed with FF. As things stand right now, if i had to sell camera gear, the K-1 would be the first to go. It's "nice to have" not "have to have" and didn't cost a lot because I already had lenses for it, but there have been many times, I would have better images if I'd taken my K-3, based on higher resolution in the crop area, for an image that had to be cropped on the K-1.

So, I'm still saying, I don't need an FF camera. But it is nice to have.

Ya, the thing is, when we have done comparison shots, for 95% of what we shoot we could use a Q. The IQ for a small camera is amazing. We still use larger sensors hoping for the killer shot that makes us a million, but so far the faith that will ever happen is unjustified.

I do have a very small minority of images that benefit from the larger sensors, but without that misguided hope of getting the awesomest shot ever taken, I'm not sure a Q wouldn't be my only camera.

Viewed on a 4k monitor, Q images hold up, up there with the best and are indistinguishable from even my K-1 images. Many think you can print larger with a 24 MP or 36 MP camera, someone should take the time to prove that's true.
