Welcome aboard!
Aside from the guitar, we share lots of hobies. Though I've been back in miniatures painting mode this year and enjoying it.

Likely 3, at least for the past few years. Big ones. But that's when I'm outside walking along the river most often. If my wife is with me I can leave her with the dogs to get more sneaky shots, but that's problematic, since the Malamute thinks he's missing out on something and starts making a lot of noise. Usually I can get at least a few shots on the weekends during migration season or in winter when the diving ducks are here.

As always, the decision between portability and reach is key. I can walk the dogs with the 55-300 and get an occasional shot of anything not terrified of the dogs. Are my shots as good as the guys on tripods by the river? No. Are we both limited by opportunities present when we have the camera? Yes.

There's no ideal solution, it's all compromise.

Thinking of Making a switch away from Pentax. is it right or just gear envy?

A used DA300 would certainly be something to research. Keeping an eye on the marketplace here via the watchlist will give you an idea of the costs. It's certainly a portable long telephoto, and can be paired with the 1.4X TC should you find yourself with a few hundred Quid in your pocket.

The option of finding one great lens in another system and pairing with a good body is still open. It's not going to be any cheaper, but maybe it's worth the money. Ultimately these are questions you will need to answer.

K3ll on camera noise reduction settings for birding

A few years back I switched to shooting RAW and then processing in Lightroom. It is more work, but the results are worth the time.

Generally I think any thing past very light-handed NR in a camera yields images which don't look "real" to me. Same with saturation. Pentax's "Natural" is plenty of saturation. More than that, plus NR gives the "Point-and-shoot" look, IMHO.

I had some troubles in the summer, which I thought was heat, but turned out a simple factory reset got everything working again.

The downside - all the customization I did for re-mapping buttons etc. had to be re-done! I forgot how much I customized to suit my shooting in the field. The guys here have been very helpful with tips, like using the RAW button for a Shake-Reduction toggle, since I shoot RAW anyway.

Payment options are best asked to Adam.

You can ask questions about the medium format lenses in the Medium Format forum here. Those guys will be happy to point you the right direction.

This again? Are we listening to the Oldies Station, playing all the greatest hits of all time. Boring, and uninformed.

The FF lenses I have are among the highest quality lenses for their purpose.

There's no reason for a DA version of the 100mm macro lenses, for example. Absolutely none. (OK, release one with the newest focus motors and maybe there's a reason to replace my FA100 f2.8)

DA 18-135 mm lens

I find the 18-135 a nice walkaround lens. It has enough reach for most uses.
Sharpness in the 35-100 range is better than the extremes, though wide open you won't notice most of the time.

As others say, I'd keep it for those walkaround uses and look for a prime or two in your favorite ranges. We all have our favorites, mine's the 21mm.

Muscle Memory is tough to overcome. I'm still getting used to the switch of rear-button focus position from the K5 to the K3II. Mostly because the new position is more likely to smudge my glasses....

It takes time, but overall I think Pentax does a great job with ergonomics and menus. There are numerous ways to access quick menus for basic parameter changes.

Welcome to the club!
Investigate the DA 35mm f2.4, it's inexpensive and nice as a standard prime. If you want a bit wider, I like the DA21mm pancake, I think it's very hard to beat for contrast and color, plus it's tiny.

Also don't neglect the WR 18-55 or 16-85 as Adam mentioned. WR is great to have on trips.

I'm comfortable with the K3II now, field macro with ringflash has been great. I'll put my money toward other lenses instead.
We'll see, though, what the replacement brings - a siren's song of new sensors and autofocus engines....

Do Lens Distortions still Matter?
Posted By TER-OR

It's about the image. Everything is post-processed. JPG conversion is post-processing. Adjusting the light intensity through a negative is post-processing.
I don't understand it either. Highly manipulated HDR images straight from the camera are somehow OK, but adjusting the exposure and saturation aren't? I suppose if you want all your subjects to look like they're in a sauna because the sensor is very sensitive to red...but I'll keep knocking that saturation down a little in the red channel or just desaturating images a bit overall.

If a lens distortion makes the image one you're less pleased with, then adjust. Most of the time it's essentially impossible to tell, unless you're doing a tight portrait or scientific macro.
