Mirror Slap / Shutter Shock on K-1

I did a test by mounting my DA* 300mm and placing it and the camera on my granite kitchen worktop. Pressing down while taking some test pictures. No shutter induced blur at all. When the same combination is on a tripod shutter shock blur is evident.

I dont think the sensor is the issue

Mirror Slap / Shutter Shock on K-1

I have made a number of contributions to the other threads on this issue.

First, I don't have the 28-105.

Secondly, I don't notice shutter shock when handholding with any of my lenses.

Thirdly, I do notice shutter shock issues in the 1/60-1/200 range when using a long lens (with tripod foot) on a tripod.

In my experience the issue is solely down to shutter shock, as using MLU does not improve the situation at all. Using ES as the OP says, completlely eliminates the problem.

Some novice questions for this month

In the interset of clarity for the OP, the focal length of a lens in itself does not affect DOF. If the same picture is taken with a 50mm and a 100mm lens so that the subject is the same size in the image , both pictures will display near identical DOF.for any given aperture. (The camera to subject distance will be twice as long with the 100mm lens).

Of course if the camera to subject distance remains constant, the DOF will be narrower with the 100mm lens, but this is a result of the magnification, ie. the subject will be twice the size in the picture.

Shutter problems seem quite common on the ME. I dont think the ME can be operated at all without batteries.

Difference between TTL and P-TTL flash.

I don't think those are flash images. There are shadows where the surfers body or board are shielded from the sun and despite being in direct line withe camera are not illuminated.

And the subject is going to be too far away from the flash for it to have any effect anyway.

Do you have another flash unit to try out? It sounds like a Cactus-Metz issue

mmm I use Silkypix Developer Studio to process my RAW files and I have the option to use: Camera settings or OFF or ON for lens corrections. Perhaps all the lens corrections are updated in Silkypix already.

Difference between TTL and P-TTL flash.

It may work as a slave if you set the flash to "dumb" slave mode, so it simply flashes at the power you have set when the main flash is triggered. You will have to use manual flash on the main flash to achieve this. If you try to use P-TTL on the main flash you will find the "dumb" flash will fire on the Pre-flash not the main one.

Perhaps you can post some pictures that Nikon and Canon users can achieve that you cannot. You may receive some advice that can help.

I occasionally have found with the K1 that after setting everything up I go to take my first picture and no flash firing. I change my procedure now so that the last thing I do before taking an actual picture is to turn the power down a few turns of the wheel on the TX unit then back to the level I want (or indeed to TTL mode). this seems to wake-up the RX units and everything works fine from there on in.

I also suggest you change the sleep setting on the K1 when using flash so it does not nod off.

This is using Pentax AF540/360 units as well as Cactus RX60

You can use Av mode yes. But why would you want to for night shots?

No. Flash compensation is in stops and ranges from -4 to +2 with the AF540 FGZII. You tell the flash to over or underexpose by an amount in stops from the P-TTL baseline reading.

In manual flash output only I believe. This is because the flash is not P-TTL compatible, and the K-M is not TTL compatible.

Only in Manual mode. A TTL flash cannot work as a P-TTL flash on a modern body.

Thanks for the explanation. i didnt see any cables with the V6IIs I have, but it has the port on the side so I suppose it is possible. Does away with the "line of sight" problem.

Set up your k1 so that the flash compensation menu is accessible using the info button.

What flash mode are you using? P-TTL ?

Use manual exposure so you control the ambient light and let P-TTL provide the flash output to light the subject. Use the flash compensation on both flashgun and camera to fine-tune the flash exposure.

Very pleased. There is some vignetting but I find it is easily removed in PP. Image quality is great. AF is a bit slower than a more modern lens, but overall it is a great lens and a very useful focal length.

magnified view in LV ?

Bob

10x view is a 100% view. That means for each pixel that your LCD can display, it displays one pixel from the camera sensor. You may well be getting good focus using 16x, but each step above 100% will lead to pixelisation. It is a bit like viewing a 500 pixel wide picture in full screen mode on a 1920 wide monitor.

K-1 Crop Function

A 300mm lens on aps-c camera (or K-1 in crop mode) gives the same "field of view" as a 450mm lens on K-1 in FF mode. What it does not do is give an "equivalent image". The magnifying/telephoto properties of a 450mm lens is 1.5 times that of the 300mm.

You will not achieve the same resolution or "reach" using the 300mm in crop mode on the K1 as using a 450 mm lens in FF mode. The same is true for using the 300mm on an aps-c sensor camera, although output quality depends on other factors such as pixel pitch too.

The OP asks if the 300mm in crop mode gives him an "effective" 450mm lens? Apart from field of view the answer is no. I expect when folk ask this question they are more concerned with "reach", magnifying ability, call it what you wish, rather than field of view.
