What is Pentax doing?

I use AF.C, AF Point "Spot", "1st Frame Action in AF.C" "Release Priority" (Menu C3 16), "Action in AF.C Continuous" "FPS-Priority" (Menu C3 17), and "Hold AF Status" "Off" (Menu C3 18) with my K-3II. I also usually shoot single frame. Those settings are what I use for sports and birds in flight.

I shoot birds and sports, and if I am tracking a subject the AF performs well for me. I usually use AF.C for that type shooting. I do not need to use the back button method for AF. The shutter button is enough for me. If a user has tracking skills and the camera is set correctly (ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture) to handle the type shot, the user will have successful results. I also use "Spot" AF (center point) to track birds/sports to know specifically what I am tracking. The style of the Pentax camera does not overdo itself in the AF points it has available, and what it already has and has had has been viable for me. I am satisfied with the control set and feature availability of the Pentax lineup. If a user practices and has knowledge of what they are doing there will be reasonable results.

AF Fine Adjustment is explained on pages 111 and 112 of the K-5IIs manual. AF Fine Adjustment is an option in the Custom Settings menu. The rear E-dial is usually used for fine adjustment.

Welcome to the forums. I had a Pentax-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL II also. It is capable of taking excellent pictures. I later wanted a zoom with more range, so I sold the 18-55 and got a Pentax 16-85. But as I said, the 18-55 has great capability.

The 28-80 would strike a good balance.

If you have a flash for the camera, that would come in handy. A flash with TTL (example Yongnuo YN585EX) would do well.

I would still prefer the type I pointed out because it (the base) is padded, has a d-ring screw, no raised lip on the base, the structure is not difficult to deal with, and it is simple to use.

Owners of Pentax 55-300 and 150-450 - Are you still glad you bought the 150-450?

The 150-450 will give the super telephoto that you need for long distance. For example, I use my Sigma 150-500 on my Pentax cameras for birds in flight or stationary (in trees or in water), and for some sports (soccer). It gives me the option of getting real close-up shots while giving me a nice range to work with that I can adjust to different situations. I had a 55-300 years ago and it gave me nice images, but did not cover the super telephoto range I knew I wanted, so I traded it in and got my new Sigma 150-500 (when they were still made). The 150-450 was not available then. If I did not have my 150-500, the Pentax 150-450 would be my first choice for super telephoto zoom. The new 55-300 is lighter than the 150-450, but does not serve the same category of shooting needs. In most cases I use my 150-500 handheld for the versatility.

I usually move it (the L plate base) just to the side enough to open the door and switch out the batteries. It really is not a tedious thing for me. The plate is interchangeable between my cameras and does what I need.

How sharp is the Pentax 70 - 200 f2.8 wide open on K1?

The 70-200 is sharp enough while using an appropriate aperture for the detail depth appropriate for the subject. F 2.8 will only reveal what is included in the depth of field it acquires, and what is included is nicely detailed if the focus is correct.

K-3 L Bracket Options

I have a plate without a lip, but the plate will not move if it is tight. The access to the battery door can be achieved by just loosening the D-Ring screw on the plate and moving the plate a small amount. I have used it on my K-5IIS and K-3II.

This is a shortcut to a plate (MPU100) that is similar to mine (below).

I know it has been a time since this thread was posted, but I just wanted to post an answer.

The plate will not move if it is tight, but I have had instances where it has moved (twisted) a small amount. The access to the battery door can be achieved by just loosening the D-Ring screw on the plate and moving the plate a small amount.

This is a new shortcut to a current plate that is similar to mine (below).

Has anyone else experienced this K-5II issue?

I experienced freeze ups on occasion, and as has been said turning off power, removing the battery, re-inserting the battery, and turning the power on did solve the issue. Also the old/faulty battery symptom may be the problem. I strictly use Pentax batteries, and they are usually dependable for a long time.

Good luck!
