Ah ok I see now. I figured it would operate the same way as it when it is mounted on the camera.
Will have to save for another flash, any recommendations?

I have the YN560 off camera on its little stand, it fires properly but the camera flash is still firing, I have tried a number of settings but think I am doing something wrong.
I am in Manual mode 1/160 shutter, auto Sigma 2.8 lens.

Thanks I will try that, I have never played with the AF modes, its been in AF-A since I bought it.
From what I read, AF-C is better for low light and AF-S for action shots.

I generally use my Sigma 17-50mm F2.8, I also have the Sigma 50mm F1.4 but its too tight in some cases.
I have the K-x which seems to be a bit off since taking it to Burning Man so thinking of upgrading to the K-5 II or K-30.

I usually shoot with natural lighting but was recently shooting for a friend at her event and the lighting was pretty dim and the camera was having a real hard time focusing. Is there any way around that apart from using a flash?
I have a cheap external flash at home but that didnt help much either. I definitely need to master using a flash, any tips/advice would be appreciated.

The focus was on the strings near the saddle. I'll take some more test shots this w/e
I've no idea about tuning the camera to fix front/back focus!

Yes its a 100% crop. Im not really blaming anything more than getting a reality check on what to expect :)
I used the remote in focus mode I think tho I did a focus from that camera first anyway.
I appreciate the feedback a lot!

I was using a tripod with the remote.
Is there any way to remedy front-focus error or is it inherint in lenses?
The testing continues...

I used my remote so that should minimise shake.

With my K-x, I took a picture about 9ft away - 1/6 at 2.8, ISO 200, 50mm just to test the sharpness.
I consider myself a newb so I guess I am expecting too much in terms of quality but I was hoping to see a pretty sharp image.

That does help :)
I dont mind spending the extra $ on a new lens if the performance is comparable, it seems the DA 18-250mm is a great choice.

Thanks guys I will look into the DA18-250. Cant find it for sale on B&H or Amazon.
Anyone know how it compares to the Sigma?

(Oops my bad, updated title... blaming lack of sleep!)
I am looking at these 2 lenses at the moment and wondered what your favorite is, I am also open to suggestions of similar lenses up to $600-700 price range.

I just bought the Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 AL Lens and was playing around with it at the weekend, I am seeing pretty bad fringing in high contrast images... is this a lens problem? |

Ok so I may return the Sigma and get the 17-50 2.8 CA.
That should cover me for a while, thanks for your honesty!

First of all thanks for all the responses, a lot to digest. I am quite a newbie really, I am still in the learning stage of equating the numbers to what they can produce etc.
The one thing I am trying to understand is the focal length and its relation to the sensor size.
I am shooting anything from people right in front of me to across the (sometimes) large room - say 10-20ft away, I will look to find if I have any SFW shots in the meantime. Its fetish photography so I cant really use their pics.
At some point I will upgrade my K-x, but from the advice Ive received to far I should get the quality lenses first.
It sounds like I should get the Sigma EX Lens - 30 mm - F/1.4 - Canon EF,
While waiting for replies and getting a better understanding I ordered a couple of cheap lenses, one of which was suggested.

So I am using and loving my Pentax K-x but need lower noise and ability to shoot at a faster shutter speed in low light conditions...
Its indoor, mostly mood lighting, I cant use flash (the film camera guys have lights on their handhelds).
I am using the kit lens and like the zoom range but at ISO 1600 its kinda noisy.
Budget is around $1000
