And my new to me K-3 is toast. Another K-3 or a new K70?

gaweidert, I had a very similar problem with my K-3 about 3.5 years ago when I was up in Chicago for the last Tall Ships event. Couldn't find any wrong settings to account for it, resetting the K-3 took care of the problem. Its been fine since. The attached photo is an example of the "color shifting" it was doing, it seemed to cycle thru a variety tints.

On my film cameras, Nikon FM & FE2, I always kept them in their form fitting ever-ready cases when using them. The bottom part which stayed on the cameras when using them protected them from most such scratches. I assume Pentax had such cases available although they are probably pretty rare by now.

Replacing a K-30 with ??? what?

Interesting, I don't recall very many complaints about "limited focusing accuracy" of the K-5. I think that Hoya did correct most of the problems attributed to the K-5 by the time production ended. My K-5 was purchased new just 2 or 3 months before the introduction of the K-5 II (s) versions and has not had any issues other than the tungsten light issue. Focusing accuracy has not been an issue with mine.

K70... how reliable?

To Hoya's credit, I think by later production runs they had corrected most of the quality control issues, aside from the issues with certain types of artificial light. I bought my K-5 just a few months before the K-5 II was released and haven't had any issues with it.

Actually I've had better luck with Highland Games than with agility shows - mainly because the agility shows have all been indoors. In bright sunlight I think I would have much better results.

Good autofocus & fast frame rates would certainly help with events like dog show agility trials, and photographing caber tosses at Highland Game events. Both are somewhat challenging with a K-3 or KP.

Perhaps Ricoh realizes that there are a still a few of us that don't want an articulated screen in a flagship camera....

And yet I'm more enthusiastic about the K-3 III because it doesn't have an articulated screen. That said, I do have a KP and for the few occasions where that's a useful feature, I'll just plan on using the KP. I appreciate that Pentax/Ricoh still gives us a choice between having articulated and non-articulated view screens on their cameras.

I have both a K-5 and a KP I don't notice that much difference in size and weight. They BOTH feel small and light compared to my Nikon D700

KP D-BG7 battery grip

While the KP grip does make the KP rather large, it does handle well & is comfortable to use. I ordered one from Adorama when the sale first started and find I like KP with grip much better than my K-3 with battery grip installed. It handles better and "feels" more compact to me, although it probably isn't. At under $150 its a worthwhile investment.

I suppose it depends upon what you are used to..., in my case not having a K-50 or K-70 but having a K-5 & a K-3, I find the KP slightly less "dense" and more compact feeling. It does remind me a little bit of my film cameras which were Nikon FM & FE2 cameras.

I recently got the KP battery grip when it was on sale at Adorama & B&H. While it does make the KP considerably larger, it is comfortable to hold and use. While the combination is not smaller than the K-3 plus its battery grip - it feels smaller and more compact and is better handling to me.

I would second that ! I have the Nikon version and am very pleased with it . Its relatively compact, affordable and surprisingly good. Also, unlike Pentax DFA15-30 it accepts a circular polarizer. For me at least it would be a big incentive to buy a K-1 II.

I also find using a card reader to be preferable to downloading directly from a camera. I don't think I've done that more than once or twice from a Pentax DSLR. Anyway if your using a laptop almost all laptop have sd card readers. Now with my Nikon D700 I do download directly from the camera out of necessity after I damaged a pin in the Compact Flash slot trying to reinstall a Compact Flash card.

Saturday night I was using PentaxForums camera comparison page to compare the new K-3 III with the K-3 and at the bottom of the page there is/was a "continue" button which I clicked on. It led to a series of flashing warnings that implied that my computer was in the process of being "hijacked" and being locked out and to call an 800 number for help. Chrome could not be quit normally thou I was able to by using Control-Alternate-Delete. Afterwards I ran MalwareBytes & ESET which didn't find anything. So I am assuming that it was not much more than malicious java code.

Which is exactly why Mazda has been going upscale the past couple of years. Their Grand Touring models compare very favorably with the entry level BMWs for instance. They are comfortable, handle well & fun to drive, & very attractive. I see a lot in common between Mazda's design strategy & ethos, & that of Ricoh/Pentax's camera division.

If I had to start from scratch today... I'd probably still pick Pentax if I had the opportunity to compare in-store the Pentax bodies with competing models from other brands. Mainly because of Pentax's superior ergonomics and build quality. Also, for the type of photography I'm mostly interested in they have most of the lens that I need or want. Back in film days I was strictly Nikon, but when I bought my first DSLR an *ist DS it was the much better ergonomics & build quality than the Nikon D40 or D50 and the Canon Rebel that won me over to Pentax. Also the Nikons could not meter with my Nikor AI lens, and Pentax had better compatibility with legacy lens. If I had to change systems now Nikon full frame DSLRs like the D750/D780 are the only somewhat acceptable option. There is nothing else in APSc that interests me.

The GPS function on IPhones & probably Samsung phones & tablets does not rely on using data or cell coverage, it works off satellites not cell towers. I use Earthmate a legacy mapping app from Delorme (now Garmin) that works fine in mountain areas like in New Hampshire's White Mountains where the cell coverage is very poor. Earthmate uses downloaded maps including topo maps & shows your exact location on the map. A Bluetooth connection is probably a viable option although I would prefer the GPS to be built-in.

One thing that I've noticed with my KP is that the "bright" mode under Custom Image settings is much more intense than it is on the other Pentax cameras I've owned - almost to the point of being garish. On my *st DS, K-5 & K-3 they are all set for the "bright" mode setting. On those camera I find the "natural" mode somewhat "washed out". I would suggest trying out both settings with your KP.

What Pentax Values Most in Future Cameras

While people are regularly upgrading their cellphones, I think the majority are upgrading for reasons other than cellphones as cameras, such as: (a) needing better battery life, (b) more memory, (c) better connectivity including 5g and (d) ability to have the newest version of IOS or Android OS. Most people buy cellphones because they are phones, not because they are cameras. Many of the people who are happy with cellphones as cameras would in years past would have been happy with Kodak Instamatics or Pocket Instamatics.

I would also suggest using the "Natural" setting. On my KP with the "Bright" Custom Image setting most colours, especially reds, were exaggerated if not a little garish. Changing to the "Natural" setting solved the problem. On my other Pentax cameras (*ist DS, K-5 & K-3) I've always preferred the "Bright" setting over the "Natural" setting.

While I don't mind a tilt-screen that much on a smallish camera like the KP, which I do have & occasionally do use the tilting feature, I don't want a tilting screen mechanism on a bigger/heavier camera. Mainly because of added bulk. Why can't those of us that prefer to have a fixed rear screen have a least one Pentax model that has a fixed screen ?

Pentax K-5 replacement - 3 possible cameras
Posted By BryantCP

One thing that no one has mentioned is build quality. If your used to a K-5, there is a big difference between the K-5 and the K-70. The K-70 is not nearly as rugged as the K-5. More importantly the K-70 is known to have the same aperture control solenoid that causes aperture control failures in the K-30 and the K-50. The flagship cameras and the KP do not have this potential problem. As a K-5, K-3 and KP owner I would recommend either as a replacement for your K-5. Regarding the KP, I've not found battery life to be a significant problem.
