How many have all of the New FF lenses?

I have all five of the D-FA FF zooms. Got them before I retired, knowing that my income would go way down. The three shorter ones, along with the FA Limiteds, have become my default travel bag. I'll take one or both of the long zooms if I know I'll be needing them. Use the 24-70 most often.

p.s. Used to have a Lexus. Does that count? My Mercedes is a '83 190D, but not my daily driver. Has just under 150,000 miles, which for a 37-year old car equates to just over 4,000 miles a year. It's a gutless car, but the stick shift helps. The RAV4 is the daily driver..

You're breaking my heart with this awesome images. The memories are flooding back of my little guy at the dog park. They have so much fun there.

Glad to see the good results with the 100-300/4. Was considering getting rid of mine, (pre-DG version), because I don't use it very often anymore as I have other lenses that cover that range. Mine took some great high school baseball images, many published in the local paper. I'll seriously reconsider.

Wonderful shots. Hard to choose a favorite to hang on the wall. Instead, these should go on a SD card for one of those frame viewing screens that rotate through the pictures.

Asahi Kogaku Goshi Kaisha in 1919 . . .

Asahi Optical Co., Ltd. in 1938 , , ,

Honeywell Corporation, (U.S. importer in 50's, 60's and 70's) . . .

Samsung in 2005 . . .

Hoya Corporation in 2008 . . .

RIcoh Imaging Company in 2011 . . .

. . . and still my choice in SLR/DSLR K-mount cameras survive. I fully expect it to continue to do so.

Looking forward in two and a half more years to the 100th anniversary of Pentax.

(Still . . . I may pick up a second K-1 body for a future backup, just in case. Lenses endure. I'm still using some M series glass from my first MX purchased in the mid 70's.)

Hefty Rebates on D FA* Zooms

Been watching like a hawk since Black Friday. Nothing! I "need" the 150-450 to complete my D FA collection.

Well . . . I guess I really don't "need" it, or else I would have bit the bullet when it took a shallow dive last month.

req info on equipment and technique for upcoming solar eclipse

That's probably the best advice. Reading the few replies, I'd disinclined to photograph the event and just experience it instead.

Heck, my fancy, new camera has an astrotracker and I haven't the slightest clue about how to use it. I'm mighty jealous about all these cool milky way photographs lately. I don't honestly think I've even seen the milky way and wouldn't be able to recognize it if you pointed it out to me. So much to learn . . . and so little time.

Thanks for the help, guys. For now, I'll stick to what I know best.

There will be a total solar eclipse upcoming next August. Since I'll be retired by then, I want to make the trip to view and photograph it. Never seen one before and other than knowing that I'm not supposed to look directly at the sun, I'm clueless about what equipment and technique I should use.

I'll be using a K-1 and can select between any of the D-FA zooms, (except for the longest one), FA Limiteds, Sigma 100-300/4 with associated EX 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, and a bunch of older A, M, and K glass of various focal lengths between 28mm and 400mm. Also a mid-range Manfrotto tripod and a low-end Velbon tripod.

What focal length is "best" to use when photographing a total solar eclipse? What exposure mode? Metering mode?

I guess I could video record the event also. I still have my K-3, so that is available too.

And you're not getting mine! At least until I'm pushing up daisies. Got my copy off the bay in anticipation of the K-1. The more I use this lens, the more I fall in love with it. Small, lightweight, quality construction, handles well. Only complaint I can make about it is the lack of a hood.

Advice needed on Long Telephoto for new K-1

I have one of the K 300/4 and there was a fellow in OZ a while back who was making tripod collars for them. It is a nifty device that does not affect operation of the aperture or focus ring. This was a few years back and I don't think he is making them anymore. The shape and balance of the lens is such that it is easily hand held. At the time, I wanted the tripod collar for use on a monopod when I was shooting high school sports for the local paper. 300mm is pretty handy for the infield of a baseball diamond or covers a tennis court quite well.

I hate it when that happens. First thing I do is reset the autofocus to center spot focus point. I have my AF button set to cancel autofocus. I'll spot focus on my subject, press the cancel AF button, recompose, then shoot. Seems to help a lot, but worthless if there is 'stuff' moving in the frame.

Or just give up and focus the old fashioned way . . . turn the little ring.

Ouch! That hurts. If that bokeh is typical for the 150-450, I'm going to have to scratch it off my purchase list.

1.4x Teleconverter

This isn't quite right, at least according to the converter manual. The 1.4x-L, as you correctly state, does not fit on the M400, however it does fit on the A400. At least the manual says so. See the bottom left of page two in the manual, link below.

http://www.pentax-manuals.com/manuals/accessories/converter_a_s.pdf

I went through the same thing as you. Had a M400, acquired a pristine 1.4x-L from KEH . . . and it wouldn't fit. Sent it back. I've since sold the M400 to a collector and just this year, snagged a pretty good copy of the A400. Bummer! 1.4x-L lenses are hard to find now and really expensive. (I have the other three.)

Always on the lookout for weather phenomenon because I teach it part-time at the local community college. This is the fire plume from the Sand Fire currently burning in Los Angeles county. At the top of the smoke pillar is what is called a pyrocumulus cloud. Acquired Friday afternoon/evening through the very dirty bathroom window. Other shot is my own personal "cyclist coming toward me focus tracking test". Very impromptu. Tracking worked well enough. Last shot is just a landscape on the top of Mount Piņos, where I went Sunday to get out of the desert heat and fire smoke filled air. Pyrocumulus and cyclists shot with a D FA 28-105/3.5-5.6, landscape with a Tokina AT-X Pro 280 28-80/2.8. Nothing too impressive about the Tokina shot. Just wanted to see how it performed on the K-1. JPEGs straight out of the camera, just resized in GIMP for web posting.

NOTE: the "View Pictuer EXIF" attached to the landscape image incorrectly says that the lens used to acquire the image is a Sigma 17-70. That is incorrect. Not possible as I don't own, nor ever have owned that lens. It was the Tokina 'cause I lugged that heavy beast all over the mountain Sunday afternoon and my arm was pretty worn out by the time I got back to the car.

K-1 video quality: why?

I see it totally different. If I wanted to capture video . . . I'd use a video camcorder.

Pentax was, and is, a manufacturer of one of the best SLR cameras made. For taking pictures. I've never used the video capability on any of my bodies, and couldn't even tell you know how if asked.

I know you didn't ask, but I like the results of the Pentax better than the Zeiss. They are very close. I just like the colors and range of that old, ancient K lens better. Has a bit more "pop" to it.

Damn! People who never owned a dog just don't grasp the concept that dogs truly are "man's best friend". I'm sorry you are going through this. Bailey indeed looks like a sweetheart.

To keep the post photography related, it looks like your white balance is off a bit. Has a yellowish tint, or at least to me it does.

What was it like to move to the K-1 ?

# When you moved to the K-1, from which camera did you move.

Came directly from a K-3. Before that, I had/have a K-5, K-7, K-20D, K100D, K10D, *istDS, and my original, a film MX and K1000.

# How did the K-1 perform compared with your previous Pentax SLR - for the same tasks.

The excellent high-ISO capabilities are unsurpassed by anything Pentax previously manufactured. That's the most important to me and for my applications.

# How close or distant did you find your older camera in it's handling, ergonomics etc.

Of course, the smaller, less heavy cameras are easier to handle. Ergonomics are very similar.

Right now, I can't envision what else Pentax can come up with that would spur me to purchase a new body.
