Architecture Cadet school Alkmaar

The Cadet School in Alkmaar was a school where boys, normally between 15 and 17 years old, were prepared to later be trained as professional officers at the Royal Military Academy in Breda.

Because there was a shortage of officers, a cadet school was opened at the Wilhelminalaan in Alkmaar in 1893 to improve the flow of higher professional school (HBS) to the KMA. The education of this two-year course showed great similarities with the fourth and fifth class of the HBS, with extra attention for sports and military affairs. As with the KMA, there was a distinction between the training for here in the Netherlands or for the Dutch East Indies. For students of the last category the stay was free. In 1924 this cadet school was dissolved.

The former school building is currently part of the Medical Center Alkmaar.

That's a beautiful memory, Norm! I remember every dog we ever had very vividly, each of them with their own little quirks and idiosyncrasies.

Amateur Photographers (UK) Predicts End for Pentax

So what you're saying is that Kodak is a hooker where Pentax is just a golddigger engaged in serial monogamous relationships?

Please, everybody, get some sense of relevance and proportionality into this discussion. I have used Pentax cameras for nearly 45 years, the last 12 of which spent on the digital side. I have (and still do) owned other cameras as well. This is not about being precious about whether a nameplate indicates a company, brand, division or anything else. Just like with cars, one just uses the brand that happens to fit one's requirements at any given time, rethinking the whole thing the next time a purchase comes in sight.

I loved Saab when they were still an independent Swedish car manufacturer, they even kept making decent cars when the brand was sold off to GM and following that, to an independent entrepreneur who eventually ran it into the ground. No earth-shakes resulted, the world just shrugged and continued doing what it does best. Not saying Pentax is like Saab but the overall similarities do exist.

Even one of my previous employers got delisted from the Dow Jones, a company which stood at the basis of that very index and had been a major industrial force for over 120 years, now selling off divisions like crazy.

Nothing lasts forever and life goes on...

Long Exposure and Filters??

There are actually two ways to do long exposures on a K-70. One way is traditional by using an ND filter (and either a timed exposure or remote triggering) and the other way is to use the built-in multiple exposure facility with averaging processing. (f.i. taking thirty one-second exposures and having the camera average them into the equivalent of one single 30 second exposure)

Did you leave Adobe? Where did you go?

I never used an Adobe product to begin with seeing I've been a die-hard Linux user for almost 15 years. I'd readily admit that I probably don't know what I've missed out on either. I have had minor irritations over the years but I've never found something I couldn't do with the tools at hand. Now, with Gimp 2.10.2 and Darktable 2.4.4 that seems to be more true than ever before and in some areas using these tools on Linux actually feels more polished and smooth than on Windows (in a pinch I sometimes edit on my work laptop which has the Windows versions of the same software installed).

Besides having access to far more options than the Adobe offerings, the other tools available such as bash scripting, GMIC (whether under Gimp or from the CLI) make editing a pleasure. My only concession to paid software is NeatImage (native Linux version) which I have been using for as long as they came out with a linux version. The update policy is decent and the cost limited.

Little sheepdogs grow big! Noam was with us a year yesterday. When we picked him up, he looked like a tiny and cute battery-operated black & white stuffed animal, a mini panda bear that fit on my lap with room to spare. He is now 14 months old and look at him!

Allow me to look at this from a slightly different angle. I've been shooting Pentax cameras for well over 12 years (if you discount the 20+ years invested into the K1000 in my younger years). I buy a lens every now and then but over the years, as my collection grew, I've started divesting of stuff and sticking to a core set of glass I like to shoot with. I've gone through a number of bodies from the K110D to my current K-70 which I very much appreciate and enjoy - it is an absolutely wonderful piece of camera equipment.

Were Pentax to disappear overnight, would I suddenly find out my gear stopped working? Would I be forced to switch to a different system all at once? Rubbish of course! I'd happily continue to shoot and who knows I might, in due time, eventually migrate to another brand over the course of 5-10 years.

I'm not married to Pentax and Pentax isn't even a company, it is a brand name which is bought and sold between companies as if it were a commodity anyway. I tremendously enjoy my current gear and my current gear is branded with the Pentax name. That's all there is to it. I don't owe anything to any commercial company or one of its brands and vice versa, we both move with whatever developments throw at us and react accordingly.

With other words, a forum editor of a website owned by a major B2C company (Amazon) can say anything he likes, a printed photo mag (mags have pretty much gone out of business anyway) can do the same but why would anyone here feel threatened or insulted? Our cameras and lenses are pretty decent and deliver top-notch images and that IS what it's all about anyway.

It's an Arax tilt mount with Pentax-K bayonet at the back and Pentacon Six (Kiev) on the lens-side. I got it from the Ukraine a couple of years ago together with an Arsat 80mm/f2.8 lens.

Tilt adapter: Pentacon Six ? Nikon F, Canon EOS, Pentax-K, Sony E-mount

Oh, I not bashing DNG/XMP for such niche-uses, far from it, just not as a viable 80/20 solution.

You have basically pointed out the same flaw with XMP as with DNG : both are developments which are not so much targeted at ease of use, reliability or merit but purely on vendor lock-in by the creator of both "standards" (quotation marks as most other companies quickly realized what Adobe was attempting to do and refused to play that game).

You do not need either DNG or XMP formats to maintain a decent raw workflow. Actually, saving and resaving data in persistant memory in a file format is a rather wasteful and silly way to do things.

To be honest, on my system RT and DT are friends as well. Sometimes I use RT and other times DT ends up delivering a better result. I can't pin it down precisely but I enjoy both programs tremendously. I suppose that's the benefit of running a FOSS system - one is never forced to choose and use the whole plethora of available tools.
