An apology to ogl...

From the link provided:

"Very few Americans would say the herd were thirsty."

Actually, I would suspect if someone in North America used that phrase they would be regarded as a little strange.:D

I had no idea that "British" English has a different view on this subject. I guess I should have been suspicious based on their boots and lorries and such.

As to pingflood's comment: "It's pretty sad when people don't have anything of value to add" , I wonder if he/she/it considers this post to be of value - "True but he's still a troll."

Some eagles just flew by, so I'm off to do some photography!

"So please tell me something I didnt already know."

How about a little lesson in grammar?

1. Samsung were looking at the micro concept as they said so
2. Pentax were not going FF in the near future as they said so

Apparently you don't know that (when referring to corporations) you should have used the singular as in:

Samsung was; Pentax was not.

I thought you knew everything. How disappointing!;)

A different and beautiful shot JMR.

Twasn't the Eagles, though. It was America. One of my favorite songs back 30 plus years ago.

It was written by Dewey Bunnell, who still tours with America the last I heard. Anyone know if he's related to Ned???

Snakes anyone?

You really should notify some local "snake people" at the nearest college, or wildlife service branch as this really could be a remarkable specimen of this species. It does look like a Western Ribbon from the photo and it appears to be a mammoth specimen.

We do snake research where I work and I know we would love to run across a specimen that is longer than has been previously recorded.

Nice photos.

I believe, though, that the longest Western Ribbon on record was under 40 inches?

Your six footer blows that record away!;)

Here's the only photo I can remember taking with this lens:

Well, gang, it's time for me to move on.

I've gradually rid myself of most of my Pentax gear, having made the move to Nikon. I'll not bash Pentax. Nikon just suits my needs better at the present time.

I've got my trusty FA*300 listed on eBay:

SCARCE SMC PENTAX FA*300 F4.5 IF & ED - eBay (item 230304384590 end time Nov-05-08 18:00:00 PST)

As a going away gift, I'll be giving away a couple of M42 lenses.

Whoever guesses the closest to the final sale price will get:

1) A Sigma 1:4.5 f:70-210mm, multi-coated, Made in Japan lens.

2) A Gemini 1:4.5 f:80-205mm,, Zoom/C-Macro, Made in Japan lens.

3) Any other odds and sods I find kicking around.:D You never know - might be something good!

Both are in EX shape, and I'll pay the shipping, too.

Furthermore - if someone guesses the EXACT sale price, I'll donate $25.00 to Pentax Forums.com

I hope you'll have fun with this!

Wildlife Photographer of the Year / Where is Pentax Photography

A couple of points:

"I think Marc Langille would have something to say about that Tom"

First -I think Marc is one of the very few Pentax photographers that can produce decent wildlife shots with his equipment. But note that his best glass cannot be purchased anywhere - not available for sale - he bought his prize lenses before they were discontinued or shortly thereafter.

Besides, I don't think Marc makes his living as a wildlife photographer.:hmm:

Next: "Note also the P&S entries". A couple in the kids' competition and one in the adults'. Like I said -" Not to say someone couldn't get lucky once in a while eg. the Lumix, Powershot and Coolpix shots."

Finally : "As far as no Pentax taken shots in the exhibition, it's just a microcosm of the real world." Here's another hint that Pentax is not in the wildlife photography business -

Photo Critique Forums

NPN is one of the best wildlife photography sites on the net, (not just a microcosm, or if it is just one of many where Pentax is not represented) and has many of the best wildlife photographers in the world posting in the galleries, along with amateurs of all levels. There used to be one Pentax shooter (me).

What does that say about Pentax?

Pentax does not make the equipment that a professional wildlife photographer would use.

Not to say someone couldn't get lucky once in a while eg. the Lumix, Powershot and Coolpix shots.

There is just too much time and effort involved in serious wildlife photography to "settle" for second rate AF, tracking, FPS. Not to mention that suitable glass is virtually non-existent.

RH "a maverick" according to 1001Noisycameras.com

"Maybe the problem is that he canít take pictures."

In response to some similar baiting a few weeks back, RH posted a link to a series of photos of Dragon Boat races.

And you know what? There were photos there that were better than 95% of what I've seen here and on DPR, even those taken by the "most respected" members of both sites.

Of course nobody acknowledged his photos. Just as nobody wants to acknowlege that many of his points regarding Pentax shortcomings are right on the money. I guess the truth hurts?;)

I cannot understand why his opinions are any less valid than ours.

Mark-up on cameras?

I watched a whole whack of brand new K20D's being auctioned off by ProDigital 2000 over the past week or so. Here's an example:

NEW PENTAX K20D 14.6MP DIGITAL SLR BODY NEW IN BOX - eBay (item 140274336857 end time Oct-13-08 12:21:06 PDT)

If they can sell them for as little as $610. and pay eBay ands PayPal fees, what are they actually paying for these cameras?

There have been at least TEN sold for less than $700.00 and another bunch just over $700.

These are not gray market cameras or refurbs. and have full 1 YR International warranty, so how can they sell these at these prices unless they have paid only $500. or so for them?:hmm:

Are cameras marked up a lot more than I used to think - 10-20% only?

Ideas?

Is there not a double standard here?

Those that are consistently pro-everything-pentax are never required to show photos.

Those that question any product or marketing decision seem to draw the "let's see your photos so that we can judge whether you're worth listening to" comments.

Rice has provided links to some of his photos - at least twice that I recall. Some were of a Japanese musical performance, that I thought were quite good - but, because they were produced by RH, they drew negative comments by some who could probably do no better.

I don't blame him for ignoring calls to link to more photos. Why should he? Why should 24x36Now?

On a related note, on DPR I asked Roland Mabo to post a link to his PPG gallery, as SURELY, someone as outspoken as he is about the razor-sharp lenses he owns (never has seen a Pentax lens that wasn't absolutely perfect, if you can believe that) and who knows everything Pentax has ever done and will do, has produced some real masterpieces.

There are others, mainly on DPR, that are as vocal as Roland, but they tend to use "screen names", making it hard to decide whether they, too, are worth listening to.

Turnabout is fair play - no?

As stated in previous posts, I've switched over to another system more suitable to wildlife photography, so it's time to pass my Pentax equipment on to those with a use for it.

I'll be listing two items at a time, usually one premium item with one misc. item. Listings will last 48 hours, at which time, if not sold, I'll list them on eBay.

Prices will be firm, in US$ with free shipping in North America ($10. worldwide) -insurance extra if required. If paying using PayPal, I'll split the fees 50/50.

I apologise in advance for the lack of quality of the photos. I'm not a product photographer, obviously.

First response in the thread will get the item.

The first item is the ever-popular Pentax SMC PENTAX-F 1.7X AF ADAPTER. Yes -I had TWO! I was holding onto this just in case Pentax was going to release a camera more suited to my shooting needs, but it's not looking too good.:Body shows little or no signs of use - no marks/scrapes, etc. Glass is excellent! Priced at a very reasonable $345.

Next is an uncommon 400mm lens -the TELE-ASTRANAR 400MM F6.3. Bet you've never heard of it, huh?:D SOLD!

This an M42 mount fixed 6.3 telephoto. Comes with removable tripod mount and generic M42 to KM adapter. Weighs less than 2 pounds and is easily hand-holdable. Manual focussing is very smooth. Body shows some minor wear, glass is excellent, 9 blades. Here's a sample shot I took this morning, resized only full frame, just resized:

$75.00 and it's yours - a cheap way to get into the 400mm range with decent results. THIS LENS IS SOLD! Thanks, Nick.

Update! I just had to try it! I put the TC on the TELE-ASTRANAR and this is what I got, shooting the same subject from the same distance:

Again, no processing, full frame, resized only. Not too shoddy, huh? You can clearly see the spider webs on the duck and the bokeh looks really decent. Talk about a cheap combo to get to, uh, 680MM!

These photos were taken with my K100D, straight JPEG's, no processing at all.

Your Pet A Day.... (post up!)

Shamus was unfortunate enough to have spent the first two years of his life in a household where the father routinely beat the mother, the mother routinely beat the kids, and the kids had no-one to beat except Shamus.

It got to the point where both parents ended up in jail and the kids in Foster homes.

Shamus was returned by the State Police to the original breeder, who worked with experts at Cornell University, trying to solve his many mental problems (he had been turned into a vicious beast - his only defence, I guess).

I was going to buy a pup from the breeder, but when I met Shamus, I changed my mind. The breeder had worked with him for over a year, but was to the point where he had to find a home or ...

I asked about taking Shamus, and he reluctantly agreed. He warned that he would bite and need a lot of work.

Sure enough, on the second day at home, he lunged at me when I attempted to untangle a toy from his legs. Bit me on the chin/mouth and knocked out a tooth. He had given me warning signs but I had foolishly ignored them. Live and learn.

Now, after two trying years, he is almost normal. Still not over all his fears, though, but maybe some day. I don't regret adopting him for a moment, but there were times at first when I thought I had made a mistake in taking him in.

The Shamus Fund was started to provide funding for rescue/rehabilitation of other Wheatens. Full name of the breed is Irish Soft-coated Wheaten Terriers.

The 300/4 actually surprised me. With the D300, it gives better results than my FA*300/4.5. A lot has to do with the D300, though, I suspect.
