I didn't know three tiered snowflakes existed until I got one under my camera today. Blew my mind, although I had suspected with number 014.
It was really neat to see. I didn't photograph the whole thing, just the fact it had three plates and two columns.

For you, and others who are interested. I wrote a tutorial yesterday on this process that includes lower res jpgs of P-2021-Snowflake005 so you can practice focus merging in your software of choice. I do ask, if you enjoyed the tutorial, that maybe consider sending a donation o gregorybmurray@gmail.com but no hard feelings if you guys don't. I am providing it for free...

Here is the link. I've also included lower res jpg files of P-2021-Snowflake005 that you can use to practice with in your focus merge software of choice. While free, at this point if you really enjoyed the tutorial, I ask maybe consider sending a donation to gregorybmurray@gmail.com. No hard feelings, I don't expect anything from it.

It's pretty easy. Extension tubes, microscope objective with RMS thread. RMS to T2 adapter, T2 to pentax K adapter. Done deal!

Here are the next two crystals. 004 is first, 003 second. It's hard to choose which is my favourite between 002 (my last post) and 004, but 004 is spectacular.

Some snowflakes are large enough that 2x would be fine. These smaller plate type crystals are only 1-2mm in diameter though, this one a tad bit more, so you do need a decent amount of magnification to fill the frame, or come close.

Thanks!
Aesthetic crop just to centre it completely so not much, but looking at the original and with the accessories I *think* I used, only 5mm would fit in this frame. Essentially it's between 4.6x - 4.8x. I don't know the exact sensor size atm other than it's just under 24mm. I think this is it because I was switching accessories around depending on the size of the snowflake. Some needed way less, some needed more. It's possible this could be around 6x lifesize.

This $20US microscope objective is paying it's dividends and then some.
Caught this crystal today. It looks like it has a second plate growing off a column that is affixed to the main crystals plate. Or in other words, a capped pillar where one side started to flesh out. This makes it look like the main crystal is topped with a diamond. It is a very unique shape and a very lucky find.

First image is a focus merge of my new AmScope 4x Plan Finite microscope objective with 36mm of extension tube followed by a 2x teleconverter which yields more than 4x, but probably only around 4.6 to 5x.

Plan4x36mm+2xTele by Greg Murray, on Flickr

These next ones are a bunch of test images. I just got the objective yesterday and this is my first time ever using one. My experiments show that beyond 4x lifesize magnification, a microscope Plan objective is indeed sharper than a purpose built macro lens and costs magnitudes less. One thing I didn't know is that the Finite 4x Plan objective I got from AmScope can be used for more than just 4x lifesize work. It's dependant on how far away the objective is from the body. With no extension tubes is basically 1:1, and as you add more the more magnification you get. I wasn't expecting this, I thought it'd only come to focus at a very set distance from the camera and offer only 4x magnification so it is more versatile than I thought. between 1-3x lifesize, the macro and the microscope objective are fairly equal in terms of sharpness, although I am leaning towards the microscope objective.
Here are the tests:

Cool! I've not see spheres like this either!
I have a lot of success freezing everything I use to work with the snowflakes. -5 is easy to shoot in for me, -1 gets to be a challenge. Mind you, I am outside. I had issues even at -20 in my unheated garage, them sublimating a lot faster than they should have.

It's beautiful here. A population of around 6 million people, 3 million of which are concentrated in Vancouver & Area / Victoria & Area. The rest of the 3 million live spread out in an area as large as Paris in the far south past the very tip of Northern Scotland and Luxemburg to Ireland. Pretty Awesome.

Hahaha! Yes, this is very much true! Although, I know of some folks getting very god results with a small 6" reflector on a EQM-35 mount with grease replaced. About as inexpensive as you can possibly get brand new with a telescope setup. More expensive than going with a strictly camera/camera lens setup to begin with though.
Regardless, it is still a money pit more than simple photography is.
