Thanks for all the responses. To clear up a few questions below:
- I sold the 645z system for two reasons, lack of lenses to suit my needs (no ultra-wide for astro, no manageable 70-200 type lens either), lack of interest from Pentax to grow the lineup and also I damaged my hand last year and needed to downsize my kit a little in weight. I found when I travelled I was needing to take both the 645 kit with 3 lenses and the 5D4 kit just to cover my bases for the shooting that I like to do. I want one system that can handle ultra-wide to tele and everything in between.
- Canon does have an adapter, but there is none available anywhere. I have a R5 in my hands for testing and need to make a decision to keep it but I can not even use it with my lenses, only a loaner 14mm samyang that I have been given, which is a terrible lens
- I know I can use my EF lenses adapted, but ultimately the move to RF glass is on the cards. I can build an entire pentax system with a K1, KP and all lenses for less than the price of the R5 and 70-200 lens
- I will not be moving to Fuji MF, do not like it one bit.
- Having used the K1 when it did not have the electronic first curtain shutter, which is important for perfectly sharp images, I do not know what the K1 with latest firmware or the K1mkII is like now, could be a different beast. I sure did love the controls and feel of the camera when I used it back in 2016. Is the AF any better on the mark II camera? I found it lacking with the 15-30 just in single centre point focus, it would not lock on to the same spot every time and I had a bunch of missed photos.

Hi guys
Recently I sold up all of my Pentax 645z system and have been using my existing Canon 5Dmk4 system with 16-35/4, 24-70/4 and 70-200/4.
I have been looking at the new R5 mirrorless and ultimately this would involve a whole re-investment into new lenses (which are absurdly expensive), so it got me thinking about the Pentax system again and what the possibilities could be.
I must admit, I miss the solid feel and very mechanical workings of my 645 system and having used the new Canon R5 this week, it has very little soul as a camera as its basically all computer.
I have used an original K1 briefly in 2016 for a trip when it came out and only had the 15-30 lens, which while the results were stellar, the AF I felt was unreliable at best.
So the question is...........do I move back to Pentax or move to mirrorless. Obviously I won't get the amazing on-sensor AF that the R5 has, or eye detect etc, but most of my shooting is slow considered landscape and travel photos.
I want to feel connected to the camera and to something mechanical and solid, something that I feel I might miss with the mirrorless. There has to be an enjoyment factor there for me with the gear too.
Can you convince me of all of the positives of the K-1 system that I might be missing?
PS, I would probably get the new flagship crop body to compliment the system as well.
Cheers, Scott

Other option is the Zeiss Milvus 18mm f/2.8. I know somebody selling one at a good price. It can be modified also with Leitax.
Only issue I see with it is a little vignetting. Performance wise it looks exceptional.

Is it sharp past the APS-C crop circle out to the edges?
It looks like such a nice lens.

Thanks Steve.
I have looked at the A 20 on eBay and it is still quite expensive, around the same as what I can get the Zeiss for.
What is the Coma performance like on it? I plan on doing some astro with it.

Hi
I am looking at making up a K1 and KP system now that I have sold my 645z.
I need a good landscape lens option around the 20-22mm mark.
I am looking at the Samyang 20mm f/1.8 or the Zeiss ZF 21mm f/2.8 with the Leitax mount conversion.
I have an opportunity to purchase the Zeiss lens from a friend, almost near new for only a couple of hundred dollars more than the Samyang, then I need to buy. the mount conversion which is not too expensive.
Can anybody comment on the output of the Samyang 20mm lens on the K1? I will be using it for landscape and astro.
PS, not interested in the 15-30mm lens due to no filter thread.
Thanks, Scott

You’ll find pretty much most Pentax MF sales are those leaving the system, especially over the last 3 years.
You can’t say that somebody purchasing a used 645D and a bunch of used FA lenses is somehow doing anything for the brand.
I am not blaming anybody for not purchasing new, I’m just saying that if somebody does purchase their whole system used, then they might want to re-think whether their opinion actually has weight. There are plenty of people out there with money like Foamberg who if Pentax had the goods they would re-invest in new gear. Same goes for all the money being dropped on Fuji MF systems, if the product is good then people will invest.
The reality here which is the whole topic of this forum thread is that Pentax has literally done nothing with the system for 5 years, yes 5 whole years.

You say that, but............
Most people on this forum for the 645 system have never purchased anything new in their 645 kit, only used and they are typically the most vocal ones about supporting Pentax. However they have never actually contributed a single cent to Pentaxs’ bottom line by purchasing an entire value 645 kit used.

The 645z is an old camera now, so why don’t you just pick up an old non-subscription copy of Lightroom to load your 645z images into then export them as TIF files to use in your chosen software.
You can still load camera profiles into the old versions of Lightroom for raw processing of the 645z files.
If you don’t shoot much with it then this is the best way in my view.

I will test the AF later and report back but I don’t have any issue.
The main problem with the 3 new lenses is they still have a manual aperture lever, so they still are sitting in the past there.

I had the 28-45 and replaced it with the new DFA 35mm and although it’s a remake of the old FA 35, it’s as good if not better than the 28-45 because it has no field curvature like the zoom does, plus it’s very sharp.
I did some damage to one of my fingers on my right hand so needed to lighten the camera weight so the zoom had to go. I’m very pleased with the new prime.
If they did the same with the 45-85 and 80-160 as they did the 35 then they should be great. I’m happy for them to keep the aperture ring so that they can be used on other cameras like the K-1 and Canon DSLR as a backup body.

I had not seen this. It’s more promising.
Perhaps the delay in the two new zooms was to make them D-FA rather than DA so that they could be used on a full frame 645 sensor.
A larger 645 sensor would give them the advantage they need while still having backwards support for those with DA lenses like the 28-45mm.

“currently under consideration” meaning that they’ve done nothing I guess. If they’d said under development then that’s a different story.

I’m not asking for mirrorless here. I’m saying that there’s times that would benefit from an electronic finder for framing and fine focus when sun/glare is affecting the lcd screen.
Something clip-on would be fine. If that means the body is a mirrorless version of the 645z then that’s fine too.
I think it’s foolish to say that an EVF is trendy and something that doesn’t make sense. If you do then obviously you shoot differently to me. An OVF is only good for so much.

I agree and have said that for some time.
- I’m still happy with 50mp
But need the following:
- EVF option would be good for the Z
- array of shutter options
- faster processor and operation
- better LCD screen, higher res and lower reflection
- those new zooms 45-90 and 90-180 I lust for
- revised 25mm lens
- there is some size loss to be had with the empty space inside the Z
I am travelling right now in the UK and have brought my Z with DFA35 and FA80-160, plus my Canon 5D4 with 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200, BUT I’m still using my Z for almost everything because the end result is better and it’s so enjoyable to use.
If a revised Z arrived with those lenses I could actually lighten my carry load and not bother with both systems.

I did yes. But it didn’t say much as usual. Commitment without commitment is easy to do. ---------- Post added 05-24-19 at 09:26 AM ----------
Well I would like to see this sensor in the 645z body not for resolution but for the conveniences that come with that sensor tech such as better shutter options.
I don’t need IBIS as I use a tripod almost always.
I could do with the newer lenses such as a refined mid zoom.
As for the 100mp Fuji. It’s now the same weight as the Pentax with a poorer grip and even more difficult to store in a bag because of it’s height.

Fuji just dropped their 100MP sensor body.
Any word on the street if Pentax will look to utilize this sensor in a 645 body?
