Your M50/2.0 will be fine for starters. Catch in focus is a useful technique as Uncle Vanya has mentioned. You will also need to become familiar with stop down metering using the green button on the camera body. You should also enable the recognition of the lens' aperture ring in the camera's menu system. Ideally, a lens from the A series or later will allow full use of the camera's shooting modes, and the F series or later will also allow auto focus.

For sports, the 55-300PLM will be OK as long as you're happy to push the ISO hard. It certainly has good IQ and very fast AF - much faster than the older 55-300 and silent to boot. The PLM version is also more compact.

For cheap portraits, get an old film-era fast fifty, or the DA50/1.8
