Recommendations for a good cheap 135-300mm MF glass

You should seriously consider the Rokinon 135/2. It is so good even wide open that it is hard to believe and is actually an A lens, easy to use and focus.

New Sony APS-C Sensor - 26MP

I don't think Pentaxians don't spend money and don't upgrade their gear. I find them more conservative and realistic about what to expect from new gear and they don't buy too much the whole "must have new super gear hype" that accompanies Sony gear releases for example. I feel though that Pentax strategy of releasing gear with a much longer life cycle (as they have admitted in their interviews) has fed this Pentaxian culture.

So for me what is important for the new APS-C is to be so good camera and upgraded in such ways that will be very attractive to Pentaxians who have hesitated so far to upgrade their gear to take the step forward. I'm one of them, still happy with my K-5IIs but very interested in a new advanced APS-C to match my DFA 150-450 and DFA* 70-200 potential! So for me things are quite simple and the ball is on Ricoh/Pentax's field. Bring up something great and get my money! The delay for which many members grouch about - and is quite understandable - might on the other hand mean that Pentax prepares something big for her size and that makes me happy!

PS: We have read it and I also have the same information that they are preparing something "really good"! That is encouraging and tempting though I couldn't think of any company that would leak they are working on something indifferent to update their APS-C flagship...

It couldnít be different. Even AF lenses occasionally miss focus. For me what is important with long lenses where good focus is essential, is to have all the settings right to make the image you have in mind, regardless of whether you achieved or missed focus. So when you have nailed the MF the image will be great and yours successful images are great. As you say as time goes by and you learn your lens you will get higher percentage of keepers. Very good job!

Thank you very much too my friend for your "behind the photo" details, really appreciated! I'm seeing a lot of top class photos in PFs but yours are surely a nice advertishment for Pentax gear and inspiration for Pentaxians to try and reach that level of photgraphic perfection.
I'm really impressed by this image, and since I love owls I wish I could come up with an owl in flight picture at some point! It is very difficult though because I've never seen one out in open fields here in South. Usually I'm photographing small Athene noctua owls on roof tops :D

Many greetings and I'll keeping an eye for your future posts of wildlife photos in here!

I would like to nominate this photo.

I come back to congratulate Ogun because the photo is both difficult to catch and magnificent! One of the best owl photos in flight I've ever seen. Regardless of winning or not (this contest is at your photographic field of expertise) I would love to learn a few things about the photo (where did you catch it, if it is from a hide, if it was a rare opportunity or quite coomon to spot owls out in the fields in Sweden etc). Thanks again for sharing the phot with us!

Exactly! It carries the MAFFS system for firefighting.

MAFFS :: System

If you google MAFFS youíll see the exact same plane in action photos.

Yes I’ve compared all the various settings I could think of until I’ve reached to the technique I’m using now. First of all I’m getting better results when I’m using the HD DA 1.4X mounted between the lens and the 1.7X than the other way around. I manually focus the combo in live view to get the best results. This is the hardest part, as the DOF is so thin you end up playing with literally touching the focus ring not turning it... I use mostly TAv mode with the compensation I prefer when there is light and M mode after sunset or before sunrise (this applies mostly to the DA560 alone or with the 1.7X to have a brighter combo). You get the best results with remote control and 3s timer always in live view mode. If there is action in the scene I let go the timer but I have less keepers. Even the minimum shaking affects the IQ so you have to be very careful and don’t touch the equipment unless it’s necessary (to make focus micro adjustments). Wind might cause a lot of trouble as the DA 560 is very long and easily affected by the wind.

As for the settings the camera doesn’t recognize the HD DA 1.4X, so you read the aperture of the DA 560 + 1.7X combo. So you have to add another stop to get your real f number. The combo gives you max aperture f9.5. I usually shoot at f10 or 11 (f14.5 or 16 in reality). The SS depends on the subject and the light. I try to keep the ISO under 1000 which is easy during daylight but different as the sun goes down at the evenings. I hope that those were helpful info. Should you like to know something more feel free to ask.

Thank you luftfluss! I guess I was lucky too in the whole process but I had about 10í that the owl was sitting on that spot and took some nice pictures! I can give you more details if anyone is interested. Anyway, I can say with confidence that give me a nice relatively stationary subject/task my K-1 and a good tripod and I can make some very nice pictures no matter the conditions or the light!

The DA560 is a great lens that leaves you plenty room (IQwise) for playing. Here is a shot of an owl on a roof at quite a long distance ~70m. It was shot on my K1 with the 1.4X and 1.7X TCs on a sturdy tripod just before sunset. Settings: 1333mm, f16, 1/125, ISO400.

PS: I think that using MS Picture Manager to resize the image to fit the PF dimensions downgraded the IQ.

Backpack for the Pentax DA-560mm lens

Check out my backpack and other accessories for the DA 560 here: Pentax DA 560mm f5.6 Tips and Advice? - Page 2 - PentaxForums.com

The Ruggard Alpine 600 is great bag for the long lens. It can hold the lens attached to the K-1+grip as well, but I don't want to attach the camera when on the move to protect the mounts.

Be careful as some bags for 600/4 lenses might not have enough height to hold the DA 560. The one @LaurenOE uses for example I think is not long enough.

Iím reading many posts and rarely post lately but all I wish for is that the new APS-C is so great that will bring Karen and other Pentaxians back to Pentax! This is a tangible target for Pentax and Iím quite optimistic that it will be that good compared with the APS-C DSLRs from the competition.

Which lens to get?

My recommendation is to go for the Bigma 50-500 unless you know/are not sure you might want something better afterwards. In that case go directly for the DFA 150-450 and save some money on the process. Otherwise the Bigma is a very decent lens (especially the OS version of it if you can find a good used copy of it).
