I'm not sold on the whole idea of no low pass filter. In a lot of real world shoots that have nothing to do with camera reviews and pushing the latest and greatest gear, the K5IIs still is unpredictable when it comes to moiré. I just went with a K5II body and the Epson R2880 deal at B&H. My original K5 went to a real estate agent who is a long time friend and wanted a good camera.

If you haven't seen Adorama, they do have the original K5 for around $700

I agree with garyk that Pentax needs an updated AF system close to Canon and Nikon, even if it was like the Nikon F5 was, that would at least be reliable. The tech people designing Pentax gear figure the majority of users get by with what they have, which is true. . . . . just my worthless american 2 cents . . . should probably have posted at least 25 cents worth. . . oh well :)

They seem to be going in the right direction with the 645D (medium format system) by having it weather resistant. There's plenty of Hasselblad and Phase One users who do landscapes and deploy the additional gear protection like rain covers/bags and umbrellas. Whether that will make a difference in the user base, it's hard to tell, but if the Pro Services division lacks luster like every other department, I don't see many Professionals looking towards Pentax for any format.

DNG format issues

I experienced issues with Pentax files in capture One. Mostly the DNG and the PEF files didn't look to nice either. Using Lightroom was just the opposite, everything was fine. Capture One isn't a fan of DNG, that's an Adobe creation and the competition. Pentax users are just not that high in volume, so support for those cameras is not as important as Phase One backs, medium format, and the other guys C + N.

Pentax is a good value that's the bottom line. Images from a K5 or K30 are just fabulous. Issues . . . well, yeah, there's issues and only you can decide if those issues are a make or break deal for you to buy a new Pentax camera. Read the K30 review in this forum, do what you're doing by asking questions and then compare with other brands as to what is important for future uses . . .fast AF, accurate AF tracking . . maybe those don't apply to you so any AF issues are non-critical. I like the brand, I use it, I recommend it but as I've said before, I use my canon gear for critical assignments. I've had/used Canon Rebel cameras as well and they seem to do just fine if you plan on doing any lens upgrades and such.

How to push the Pentax Full-Frame Idea and get that FF out faster...

I actually like the images I've taken with a K5 and I do like using the older glass too. When it comes to assignments though, I use my Canon gear for several reasons like very accurate and predictive AF/Tracking, Total control over wireless flash units with accurate exposure and Best Pro Services in the industry. There's nothing wrong with Pentax gear, it just seems there's a lot of indecision going on or just some real deep hidden secrets about future products. Got to love that In Camera Pixel Mapping, but it's not enough to be deeply invested in any new Pentax glass or bodies. The huge electronic lens mount system Canon has is fabulous and yeah we lost totally function/compatibility with the older FD lenses, but we are in a consistently changing industry and moving forward with the technology will happen. Look at film . . . it's slowly fading away.

Why people complain about Pentax AF and Flash

I've seen a ton of posts in threads about poor AF performance and not up to snuff flash function. Sure you have justifiable reasons to do this taking into consideration flash photography has been an integral part of the photographic process since the 1800's when they used flash powder--powdered magnesium that burned quickly and sometimes the photographer blew themselves up. Then in 1980 Pentax introduced the ME-F, the world's first TTL SLR Autofocus camera. Nikon came out with the F3AF in 1983.

So looking back at the beginning and where auto focus is today 2012 and looking at how advanced Canon and Nikon are with auto focus and flash, you have to wonder why Pentax is still stuck in the dark ages when it comes to auto focus tracking and AF points and accurate flash control.

Perhaps AF and Flash were not big on the things to do list. When you read the Official Pentax Forum review on the K30 and read the dog test and how poorly it did and even the K5 didn't do well annnnnnnnnnnd this is 22 years down the AF road.

So I can't blame people for complaining.

Being a Fanboy is ridiculous. You either use the gear or you don't. People either need to suck it up and make the best of what they have and stay invested in that brand or move on. It's simple. Crying in forums about no FF and no flash for dummies is senseless.

There's really a simple solution to all this banter. If you have Pentax gear that works, takes great pictures and is paid for . . then use it instead of crying foul play on Pentax in here. If you don't like what you are seeing or hearing . . then boost your social status and buy a new Canon or Nikon and you'll be one of the in crowd.

Most of the people crying about full frame and more lenses don't even have the funds to upgrade never mind having to get that past the wife. How about looking at what is already here? K5 image quality is better than any camera in the same price point, fully weather sealed body and many weather sealed lenses that are less expensive than the competition, DNG raw files, in camera pixel mapping, ability to use older lenses and being an individual who buys their gear without buying into the marketing and hype.

I've been earning a living and paying my bills in this industry for over 30 years. Things slowed down a bit when digital finally became better say around 2007 and many clients were going to colleges for credit line only payment deals with students. Things have picked up more since 2010 when some of those clients found out you still need a good camera operator. I really don't know what to say about the 2 new K5 versions, maybe the s will have outstanding resolution with no AA filter, but the AF tracking should be on par with any Canon or Nikon, they should have gave it 24P video, not stay with 25P PAL, 11 AF points isn't really an issue as long as they work like a Canon or Nikon system. Sure it's APS-C but even at that the original K5 image quality was fine and the 5 foot prints I made from it looked fine it's just missing a few small important upgrades that maybe would have put a few more smiles on people instead of frowns.

Digital isn't film, it was never like film, it will never be like film. It's data converted into an image, there's issues on all levels from capture to archiving. Using multiple camera systems I was actually impressed with the high ISO images that came out of the K5 compared to cameras in the same price point. Looking at the new introduction prices, you really can't complain on an image quality level when doing a dollar for dollar comparison.

Canon and Nikon have the AP and Reuters using their gear and that's a lot of profit, they have larger R&D dollars, they larger advertising dollars and all that adds up to a larger user base.

For the working Pros who have dealt with the hush hush . . . don't talk about dust on the sensor cover ups, RAW file processing compatibility, other secret problems and bad pixels that effect all digital imaging devices no matter how expensive they are. Yep your software . . .well some software will magically map them out but it doesn't map them out of the sensor. I had a D3 delivered new and it had 27 bad pixel sites. No big deal Nikon mapped them out under warranty and with my so called Pro Service it took 10 days. Now fast forward and guess what? . . . now you have to pay for this service which they recommend you do at least once a year at $300 to $350 from what I was told. I won't be held hostage to be forced to pay for stuff like that. I never had to send in a film camera for calibration.

Now look at Pentax and Olympus. They both offer in camera pixel mapping. Don't know what that is? . . .
Go over to the Olympus web site here ( Ask Olympus: What is Pixel Mapping? ) and see what they say about it.
This happens to be a feature that outweighs a lot of other features like the crippled video and boggy AF.

OK . . . so that's not enough? . . . . Take a look at the DNG RAW format. Yeah the PEF is great, but should DNG and upload it into Lightroom and if you have a bad pixel it gets mapped out automatically. it's a good RAW format, Hasselblad and Leica have it combined with their RAW formats. Canon shooters are forever trying these mystery fix it methods like take the lens off do sensor cleaning blaa blaa blaa to map out bad pixels. Canon makes some great gear, but lets face it, this is our paycheck and image counts. It's a nightmare to use the plugins to map them out of video.

So that's my rant for the morning.

I agree that the new model should have had an auto focus system like any of the lower Pro models in Canon or Nikon. Drop in something like the 7D has since they were originally in the same price range and you would have a winner. All the "MARKETING" BS camera companies throw out there for people to just take as gospel is rubbish. Real world experience in any situation is the way to see if the 11 point not so great AF is "Good Enough" . . . sounds so much the the digital trend motto . . . Oh well it's good enough I'll fix it later in Photoshop mentality . . . . Hey who needs a fast and accurate AF system right? . . . . . It pretty much looks like they just made a few changes to the original K5 and are still using the same marketing hype . . . weather sealed and advanced AF system . . . what's so advanced in it? Take a look at this and see just how rugged a Canon 7D is and with the current rebates, it's worth the money for the features it has . . . not to be so down on the K5II but lets get real.

This can go two ways . . . Pentax will build a DSLR brand around the APS-C sensor like Olympus did around the Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds . . . . or they will eventually introduce a full frame camera based on the standard 35mm film format.

If a full frame camera actually became reality, it would be nice to see some new lenses to go with it . . say in the FA or FA/D prime line something wide 14mm to 24mm and in telephoto something 180mm to 200mm. That would complete the FA line into a very well rounded selection for all users needing wide for architectural/landscape and mid-telephoto for portraits and such.

Pixel Peepers and Numerators buy cameras based on MP's alone without looking at the uhhhhhhh excuse the term *Big Picture* . . . More pixels on X size sensor only increases noise and diffraction limits and therefore additional RAW image processing to the card to *dress up* the RAW file is required. More MP's should have bigger sensors to keep the size of those pixels from being too small. Full Frame 16mp is plenty for 99% of the work anyone is doing and years ago the 2.1mp and 4.1mp and 6mp cameras were *good enough*. How about a Canon 1D m . . . . a medium format sensor in a 1 series body that can use EOS lenses . . . now that would be a WoW introduction if you want something like that.

Digital REV's D4 vs 1Dx shootout

Digital Rev is a Pro Nikon guy so any time he says anything good about any camera that is not a Nikon is most likely pressure from the camera company aka advertisers. I have to laugh at all the great positive Nikon D4 reviews that were pouring in all over the internet while the truth of the poor image quality and LCD screen issues were being suppressed.
