Hey all - sorry for not being around lately. We're undergoing a fairly major renovation of our home (new kitchen cabinets and appliances, new flooring). Right now almost all of my camera equipment is packed away and unreachable. I do have The Stack Of Primes (Pentax A 35-105) mounted on my camera if I manage to catch my breath. Things are also challenging at work, but that's always the case, so no excuse there. :) Miss being part of the group, and hope to get back into the swing of things by March at the latest.

Welcome everyone to the Single In February 2020 Challenge!

Theme days:

Wednesday, 5th February: FOOD

Wednesday, 12th February: MADE FROM WOOD

Friday, 21st February: B/SELFIES

Wednesday, 26th February: ON THE SHELF

Aim of the Game:To use the same lens each day for a month, posting one picture captured each day with that lens. The picture must be captured with a Pentax lens coupled to a camera body of your choice (including Pentax/Ricoh), a non-Pentax lens provided it is coupled only to a Pentax or Ricoh body, or a Pentax-Ricoh point&shoot camera. (Taking other pictures with other cameras/lenses is fine, but these won’t be eligible for this Challenge).

Commenting: Posting your pictures allows other participants to comment on them. Conversely, it’s hoped that you will comment on those of other members. Please don’t be shy if you don’t have much photographic experience or are a Forum newbie - your personal reactions to photographs are as valid as anyone else’s. It’s a very friendly group and with regular commenting, you’ll soon be enjoying the camaraderie.

The rewards: It’s great fun. You’ll learn heaps about how your chosen lens can perform and you’ll see what other members achieve with their selected lenses - sometimes the same one you’ve chosen. In the comment banter you’ll pick up many tips on photographic technique generally, including post processing. As the month progresses it often becomes quite demanding (it’s a challenge, remember) but you’ll always be encouraged by other participants. Worried about LBA? - this game doesn’t help you fight it!

How to participate:

1. First you need to join the Group to be able to post pictures; you only have to do this once. The group’s name is “Monthly Photo Challenges”. You’ll find a clickable link on that forum page to join.

2. You’ll need to have your pictures stored in an on-line album. This could be the Pentax Forum, or others such as Flickr, Picassa etc. You actually post a link to the picture in your album into the daily picture thread.

** If you are linking to a Pentax Forum album, you’ll find advice on how to post elsewhere in the Forum and in the FAQs below. One of the Challenge’s stalwarts, patjp, has also prepared a short video on how to do this - it’s on YouTube (Singlein.m4v)

** If you are posting a link to Flickr, just click on the sharing icon below your selected picture and a window will open displaying the BB code. Copy it and paste into the Single in (month) Challenge thread in the Pentax Forum.

Each day, you’ll see a new thread of pictures grow and by clicking on each you should be redirected to the photographer’s parent album where you will be able to add a comment and read those of others. When you post each day’s picture to the Pentax Forum, please specify the camera/lens combination underneath your picture eg K5 & DA15 Ltd - this makes it easy for others to note what combo you’re using.

The thread you’re painstakingly reading now is the Discussion Thread for Game > Single in (month).

This is separate to the picture posting thread referred to above and you’ll probably want to subscribe to the Discussion one to keep up with activities and develop a rapport with Challenge members. It’s the place where you can ask questions, offer advice, share concerns, suggest improvements, and often just participate in general banter related to this month’s challenge.

So there it is. It is easier than it might seem at first. If you miss a day, don’t worry. If you have any problems, please ask. We’re a very friendly, forgiving, international bunch. Come and try!

Well, I forgot my M42-to-K adapter at home when I packed my lenses for vacation, so no 35mm for me in January. I’ll be doing the Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7 instead.

Welcome back! Those are some huge changes. Wishing the best for you this holiday season, and beyond.

---------- Post added 11-30-19 at 07:06 PM ----------

I'm in this month with the SMC Pentax 1.4/50. Picked it up a few months ago at a garage sale, along with a near-pristine KM. It's in excellent shape and looks barely used.

Sorry for my intermittent participation in November. I ended up devoting a lot of time to a novel I'm writing (got 50k words generated, so I'm happy with the result).

A few words on the Super-Multi-Coated Macro Takumar 4/100:

- This lens is quite sharp (as, I guess, you would expect from a Takumar macro lens). I was consistently pleased with the results, whether the shot was a close-up or focused to infinity.
- It's a long lens physically, which made it a tight fit in my Tenba bag. Some judicous re-arranging solved that problem.
- The focus throw is very long, as you might expect from a manual-focus macro. The good side of that is that it was quite easy to dial in perfect focus.
- Colors were bright and contrasty, in line with the SMC coating. I never had to boost the contrast, and the saturation only a little bit on some photos, according to taste.

I did shoot with a metal hood on this lens, and I believe this helped ward off flare on a number of occasions. With my Single In lenses, I've gone to a hood rather than adding a UV filter (depending, of course, on the relative value of the lens). But, holy crap, I loved this lens! Despite the long focusing length, I found it to be a joy to handle, and it delivered consistently excellent color and sharp detail. I also loved the flexibiility of being able to go very close when I wanted to, and out to infinity if the shot demanded it.

The first week of the month was stellar for me. The combination of an excellent lens and some great opportunities resulted in some of the best shooting I've ever done. One of my shots was my highest-ever rated on explore and got more than 450 faves. I know they're just internet points, but it was encouraging.

This one is a keeper. I expect that I will pull it out periodically when I need this kind of flexibility.

Some shots from the month:

No, respectfully, I meant what I typed. The PentaxForums marketplace is excellent (and highly recommended), but I've found some nice bargains on Facebook as well. Just trying to share information.

Keep an eye open on Facebook Marketplace - sometimes a nice vintage lens will pop up for not much money. Also, a lot of camera shops will carry used Taks (although the price has gone up in the past few years because they're so awesome on mirrorless).

I shoot a lot of vintage glass and really enjoy it. Good hunting!

Probably not. It's a K-3 and there's just not much resale value. If someone wanted to trade me for a used 77, though (with some cash to even things out), I'd be up for that.

We're pretty fortunate here in the Des Moines, IA area. We have two locally-owned camera stores, both with very knowledgeable owners and staff and a pretty good selection. One of them develops film in-house, and only charges $5 for film-only color developing (without prints). In addition, one of the Best Buy stores here has a dedicated camera section, staffed by specialists who actually shoot the equipment they sell.

None sell Pentax, but that's not surprising. I did order a K-mount Tamron lens from one of the local shops, and they were able to get it for me in a couple of days. So there's that.
