Paying too much for sentimentality: Pentax auto 110

You'll need a set of Lensbaby aperture disks to work with a range of apertures other than wide open. These cost less than $10 (in the UK) and fit perfectly into the Fotodiox PTX 110 P/Q lens mount adapter.

Rob, with the publicity you have given Pentax by being one of only five winners of the flickr 2019 Your Best Shots competition, for which there were over 17,000 entries, I think Pentax owe you a K-1!

With 17,000+ entries, for Robert Span, a Pentaxian, to be one of the five winners in Flickr's '2019 Your Best Shot' is a considerable achievement, something to celebrate. See his wining photograph plus the other four here - they are all wonderful photographs. Looking up each of these photographer's Flickr photostream and profile reveals a wealth of outstanding work. I quote Robert's comments for 'Over the Edge' here:

How this moment was captured: "It was taken on a late summer afternoon at a time when there were some very interesting cirrus cloud formations in the sky. I was concentrating on shooting butterflies that afternoon, but I ended up taking a few quick shots of the sky before I put the camera away for the day. To be honest, I wasn't really expecting anything spectacular. Later on that evening, as I was doing some post-processing, this one particular photograph stood out as it suggested to me a large wave or the edge of a waterfall. I manipulated the colours slightly with Nik Color Efex to strengthen that impression. So, you might want to call this picture a happy accident."

The photographer: "I'm a 51-year-old amateur photographer based in Ontario, Canada. I've always been a Pentax user and have a keen interest in using their older CCD-sensor DSLR bodies with vintage manual-focus lenses. For me, photography is a rewarding hobby, and I derive much pleasure and enjoyment from it, even though I still have much to learn."

Clearly he is both a self-efacing and very skilled photographer! Congratulations Robert! :)

My K-01 no longer taking pics--black screen

I can replicate the situation you describe on my K-01 if I have the rear screen 'Display' switched off. It's easily done without being aware that you have done it. To check this out, press the info button twice. This gives you four options: 1 'Standard Information Display, 2 'No Information Display', 3 'Display Off', 4 Compass icon which is only active with the GPS module. Click the right and left buttons on either side of the 'OK' button to select your preference - usually the first option. My guess is that you have the third option selected 'Display Off'.

I hope this is your problem, and hope you don't mind me suggesting it if it's not.

Happy New Year

PS Sorry, but I was wrong to suggest the above - if you set the screen display to 'Off', it comes back on again after powering down and then starting up. I should have known this. The only way can replicate the problem is by leaving the lens cap on (and yes I've done that!). I do hope you get to the bottom of this problem.

Best Budget Mid Range Zoom for the K-1

I tested some of these recently but just at 200mm and 300mm, with the following conclusions.

Standard is set by the 200 and 300 DA* primes which I would rate as excellent, or the new DFA* 70-200 which I rate as perfect. For me, clarity and colour rendition are the critical factors. WR and quiet quick focus matter too.

DA 55-300mm plm: very good at 200 & 300 (but will vignette at 55)
F 100-300mm: I don't have this one but do have the FA equivalent (see next)
FA 100-300mm: Poor at 200, very poor at 300 (both versions of FA 100-300 lenses)
FA 80-320mm: OK at 200, poor at 300
FA-J 70-300mm: Poor at both 200 and very poor at 300
I also used to use the Sigma 28-300 which I thought was good for such an extensive range.

In conclusion, of the above, I would recommend the HD Pentax DA 55-300 ED PLM WR RE, (compact - despite is enormous name). Crop where necessary at the short end if p.p. anti-vignetting at does not give the desired result. In addition to image quality, I like the WR and PLM (silent) focus. You'll get used to 'un-retracting' this lens after a while. It's a nice partner to the HD Pentax DFA 28-105.

If on a tight budget, consider the Sigma, but not the F, FAs, or FA-J.

20-40 vs 16-85 what would you bring for travel?

16-85 every time. Bulkier than the 20-40, less range than the 18-135, not as neat as the 17-70, but in my experience it is far better than these others irrespective of its excellent range.

7Artisans lens on GXR?

Thanks for the reply Steve, I found it very helpful. I measure the depth of the mount to be 20mm from outer surface of mount to inner plate (in front of shutter curtain), and I am approximating that the intrusion from outer surface of mount is approx 16mm, so it looks like the 7Artisans 1.1 will fit. The little plastic 'lens checker' which Ricoh supplies with the A12 mount seems to confirm this.

Thanks also for the Flickr link. That got me looking around and I did come across some photos by Arthur Chan taken with a GXR, A12 mount, and 7Artisans 50mm F1.1, so I think I'll splash out and see how it goes with the 50mm.

7Artisans lens on GXR?

Have any of you GXR + A12 M mount module users tried out the 7Artisans 50mm F1.1 or 35mm F2.0?

I'd like to know if these Artisan lenses are compatible with the A12 - do they fit correctly without touching the shutter curtain.
I understand that they are soft wide open but sharp at F5.6, but would really like to know how you rate them.

(I already use the GXR + A12M + PK-LM adaptor to use with my many Pentax lenses and am now looking for an affordable lens to connect directly to the A12 without need for an adaptor).

Many thanks for any feedback you can give me. :)

3rd party batteries & iBatteries.co.uk

I think the clue is in the spelling (unless I have a different website). 'Batterys'? I think not. Look at the negative feedback here: Ibatterys Reviews | Read Customer Service Reviews of ibatterys.co.uk

I would avoid.

My experience with 3rd party batteries is that they do not last, I have had to dispose of more than a few and now only use Pentax batteries, it pays in the long run and saves a lot of grief with prematurely discharged batteries. Having said that, perhaps others here can attest to better experience (in the long run) with a particular manufacturer.

New K-series DSLR under development to be exhibited

I'm still betting on an articulated rear screen. Notice how the viewing area (dark) is asymmetrical? I think it might house a side hinge. Looks like this aps-c combines the best of K-3ii and K-70 so I will part exchange these for the new baby. Delighted to see that so much of the K-1 is finding its way into this little beauty.

Pentax patented a type of hybrid viewfinder a couple of years back, so hopefully they make use it with this new beauty!

Wishing for a GXR ii - as a Pentax Mirrorless

Oldish post I know, but still interesting.

I agree, a GXR II with built in EVF coupled with a K mount module (including IBIS and autofocus) would appeal to me, but I doubt it's going to happen.

I am primarily a Pentax user who, since when Ricoh bought Pentax, have taken an interest in Ricoh cameras. At times, their diminutive size is a nice alternative to the weighty Pentax cameras, especially as I recede into the my later years.

My foray into Ricoh began with the little known GX200 +EVF and subsequently original GR Digital and then version IV with its IBIS(!) In time, much as I liked these and still do, I decided to move up to the APS-C Ricoh GR and really took to it. A few days ago I capitulated and joined the GR III club! It is an amazing camera/sensor/lens combination. In between these I also investigated the GXR series plus EVF with a GXR and 24-72 full spectrum (for infra red) module plus the P10 28-300 module. Despite the small 1/1.7 inch sensors in these, they have much to offer but mostly because they give access to the GXR body and system. The recent addition of the 16 MP APS-C sensor 24-85mm A16 module offers good resolution and I am happy with the system.

The next step will probably be the last. I am looking for the GXR A12 Leica M Mount module* which I will couple with the Kipon Pentax K mount (DA) lens to Ricoh GXR M mount adapter. Put simply this will enable me to mount Pentax lenses to the GXR with full aperture control.

I remain a dedicated DSLR Pentaxian, but am so looking forward to using the Ricoh GXR with the eight Pentax Limited and 100mm WR macro primes! I reckon it's as close we'll ever get to a Pentax mirrorless with EVF in my lifetime!

* Should you have one to sell, drop me a message, please! I'm UK based.

What is your favorite prime?

Shout out for the D FA* 50mm F1.4 !

For a standard focal length prime, it is a beast to carry around, but never fails to reward the effort.

DA* 55mm F1.4 and FA 50mm F1.4 are in semi retirement. Curiously the old FA 50mm F1.7 still gets out when travelling light, but it just cannot compete with the D FA* when it comes to everything one looks for in a 50mm lens.

For other occasions Pentax does offer an excellent range of primes, e.g. all the Limiteds, the 100mm F2.8 macro, and the two big DA* SDMs

Looks like most people here are happy with the Pentax they have. And quite rightly so.

Life, for me at least, is complex enough without having to change systems. It must be such a faff, doing all the research, selling the products from previous research, loosing out financially hand over fist, and then having to go through the new learning curve that goes with a different system. It would only frustrate me to find out that the new camera did not improve my photography.

It's not a question of brand loyalty, more a case of enjoying the perfectly good and durable equipment which I already have, and just occasionally enhancing it with another lens or maybe a camera if Pentax offers something I might enjoy or find useful. The slow rate at which Ricoh release new equipment makes these gradual additions possible without putting me in debt or requiring me to sell an old lens or body which I have an established photographic relationship with.

Yes it's nice as it is to open a box with something new inside, however I do find it much more rewarding to open up or print a freshly taken photograph that illustrates improvement in personal photographic skills. The moment when my partner says, "Welll, that really is a beautiful photograph Ronnie, you should be very proud of it. Would you print it out for me, please?" matters more than anything else.

Yes I do. It's a really good lens for the price.

But I would not dare to suggest the SMC Pentax-A* 135mm F1.8.
There are so few that these should only ever be attached to Pentax cameras.

Do non-Pentax batteries really deliver more shots? (D-Li90)

Indeed the question has been asked many times, and every time I ask who manufactures Pentax's batteries. Anyone know?

My own experience (rather than opinion) since buying the K-5 when it was released, is that all 16 of my D-L190 batteries continue to work as well as they they did when first used.

I have tried 6 other brands, and although good for a few years, with diminishing ability to hold a charge, they have all ultimately failed and ended up being disposed of.

K3 II vs KP
Posted By ronniemac

I don't have a KP, but am well provided for with a K-1, k3ii, and K-70.

The features that I would value in the KP which are absent from the K-3ii are; the tilting screen, the improved sensor (less noise), the compact form, and the third control dial.
Well, the K-70 has 3 out of 4 of these attributes and is far less expensive so I am a happy bunny.
The K-3ii does have other features which I value that are not present on the KP; a longer lasting battery, ergonomically superior, top lcd screen, which is why I will not part with it - until it's replacement is released.

All this means I can't justify buying a KP which is a pity because it is a nice little camera.

Big thanks to Mike for his opening post and his excellent responses to the various posts here.

The problem is that Pentax users seldom write in and say my camera and lenses are working just fine and always have done. This is not because their cameras and lenses have failed, it's just because it's not news.

So when people write in with their grievances of damaged Pentax gear, the impression given is that there is a problem with the brand.

All machines do eventually fail either through usage or old age, as do all living creatures including ourselves, and we know this to be true. Some fail sooner than others but I want to go on the record and state categorically that:

None of my Pentax digital cameras have failed or in any way ever let me down. The same is true of all my Pentax lenses.

And the chances are that they may well outlast me! :asleep: but if I am around when, by the law of averages, an aperture block or sdm motor or whatever fails, I'll remember that on balance I should be happy that everything else is working fine and just get it repaired or replaced and without telling everyone that the sky is falling down. Pentax K70 or KP with the 18/135 Pros & Cons
Posted By ronniemac
Replies: 23

If we consider the quality of photograph you will get from the setup, my suggestion is that you consider the less expensive camera (K-70) and a more expensive lens (16-85mm). If you can live with the reduced reach, you will be rewarded with better defined photographs and have the bonus of noticeably extra width at 16mm. I also have the 18-135 but hardly ever use it now because it is somewhat softer all round, and most noticeably between 50 and 135. I get better results cropping the 16-85mm at the long to cover the same field of view as 135 at it's long end. In-depth reviews here do support this finding.
