Tamron 17-50 2.8 vs Pentax DA 16-85 3.5-5.6

I ended up buying a used DA* 16-50 already converted to screw drive, paid about 320 USD including shipping costs. I've already checked with the local service center what the cost is to fix the SDM, since it's made prior to the updated sdm both sdm motor and electronics needs to be replaced at a cost of around 215 USD. Will use it with screw drive to start with, really no need for silent focusing since it's mainly gonna be used for landscape photography. :)
Thanks for the advice's! :)

I actually might know of an used ex of the DA 16-50 here in Sweden, if I'm not mistaken the sdm still works on that one. If, or rather when, it breaks down I think it will be quite expensive to send it to the states for conversion though.
But if I buy a used from the states I'll contact you. :)

The extra reach isn't that important, got the 50-135 and 60-250 as well so usually one of those two are mounted on the other camera. Will take a look at the used 16-50 area and see what I can find, perhaps it's preferable to find a copy already converted to screw drive since neither K-3 nor K-3II can be used to convert to screw drive. Or can any of those two be used to convert nowadays? :)

If I remember correct it (Sigma 17-50) has some issues with flare, well at least it lost in the flare section when pentaxforums compared it with Tamron 17-50 and Pentax 16-50. I shoot a lot of landscape at both sunrise and sunset so that's why I didn't even mentioned Sigma's version.

I've got a Tamron 17-50 today but got the issue with loose front element, tried to tighten the screws but I assume that the front element isn't quite in it's correct place hence bad IQ.
I've had i for about six years and I bought it used, not worth it to send it for repair so I'm looking for a replacement.

I've used it mainly for landscape but of course for other type of photography where the larger aperture has come in handy, still mainly landscape though.

So I'm looking to either buy a new Tamron 17-50, perhaps a bit boring to buy something I already have but it performs well. DA 16-50 isn't worth the extra cost in my mind, sure build quality and WR is great but I'm not convinced those two are worth triple the money compared to the Tamron.

So how does the DA 16-85 compare to Tamron 17-50? Would have liked to see a larger constant aperture for the DA 16-85 but on the other hand it would cause a larger lens and probably a huge hole in my wallet. :)

DA* 60-250, automatically switches to screw drive

I only use live view when shooting stars or northern lights so it didn't happen in live view in my case. However, both my DA* 60-250 and K-3II has been recently at service center (lens for fixing a loose tube and calibrating lenses and the K-3II for sensor replacement) so I have to admit that when putting these two together I just made a spontaneous cleaning of the contacts since I assumed that everything was clean, when I cleaned the contacts yesterday the contacts in the outer ring was actually quite dirty. So hopefully the dirt caused some miscommunication between camera and lens.

It's however interesting in the point of the fact that my K-3II perhaps have been seen as a camera that doesn't support SDM.

Yes, makes perfectly sense. Hadn't cleaned those. Thanks!
Those two contacts looked however quite clean, was the outer ring and contacts that were a bit dirty. I'm not sure but one of the two AF contacts on the lens might have had some dirt on it. Used the same cloth as for the outer contacts and didn't really looked so that I used a perfectly clean area of the cloth so the cloth had some small mount of dirt after cleaning AF contacts, not sure if the dirt was already on the cloth or came from the AF contacts. :D

Will try it again on the K-3II before putting it on my K-3.

The little I've tested in screw drive mode it seems to focus as it should, took some photos yesterday in screw drive mode and it focuses a bit faster than with SDM. When it happened yesterday it was at dusk and I got the impression that it didn't hunt as much as with SDM but then again I only took a few photos so can't really tell.

I've cleaned the contacts with a piece of micro fiber cloth, haven't used any cleaning fluid though. Cleaned it again with a brand new micro fiber cloth today and it got a little bit dirty, the contacts at least looks very clean now. Which of the contacts are the AF contacts? :)

As I understand if you mount a SDM lens on a camera that doesn't support SDM it will automatically go to screw drive (except for the DA* 55 for obvious reasons), perhaps it has something to do with AF contacts as you mentioned.

DA* 60-250, automatically switches to screw drive

Hi,

I've got a slightly different issue, I've got a DA* 60-250 that automatically switches to screw drive. Bought it before Christmas and it is a demo ex from the distributor here in Sweden, was broken from the start due to some tube being loose inside causing zoom to get stuck. It was also sent to Germany to calibrate the lens elements.

Has happened twice the last 1,5 week but I cannot force it to happen, yesterday it went from SDM to screw drive after being in sleep mode. The first time it happened was while using it. Contacts are clean but I cleaned them again just to be sure, of course both on lens and on camera. When it happens the only way to get it back to SDM is to de-attach and attach the lens, doesn't work to restart camera or remove battery.
Camera I've used is a K-3II, will try it on my K-3 for a while and mount a DA* 50-135 on the K-3II just to try to see if it is the lens or the camera that are causing this auto switch to screw drive-mode. Has anyone heard of this issue before and has any ideas?

Pentax recommended to replace the sensor so at the moment my K-3II is at the service center to have the sensor replaced. Hopefully this will solve the problem. :)

I have LR CC and it's the latest version, camera raw is also latest version. Same thing happens with DCU and the files from my K-3 are ok so it looks like a hardware issue unfortunately.

It's the same issue with the dng-files, I added a dropbox-link in my first post but it's just above the embedded pic so it's not that easy to see.

Dropbox - K-3II DNG

I bought the K-3II used from a store here in Sweden, had 892 pics taken so it was like brand new. Not a single mark on it. Bought it in July and didn't really notice any excessive noise. But I've checked the pics taken when I got it and when looking a bit closer it had some noise issue from the start. Not nearly the noise level today, however the noise is mainly seen in mid and dark tones so perhaps it's a combination of less light due to autumn and the fact that the issue has gotten worse.
I have the settings in both cameras set to the same settings, shooting in manual and raw. The only thing that may vary is WB since I had AWB on both cameras but it shouldn't cause the noise issue.
Also using the same import in LR so all settings in LR are the same, only adds lens profile and embedded profile in camera calibration.
Color NR is per default 25, however if I pull both luminance and color NR to 100 I still have noise left in the picture even though ISO 100 was used when taking the shot.

I talked with the repair center yesterday, they mentioned that the sensor calibration they made a couple of weeks ago on my camera went without any errors and meant that there isn't any issue with my camera. After looking at my samples they seems to at least acknowledge that there is an issue with my camera. They however have no idea what the cause of the problem is and have forwarded my dng-files to Pentax. As it is now my K-3II is unusable and nothing more than a paper weight in my eyes. :D
Luckily my K-3 works just fine so no mayor abstinence yet. ;)

Even though I'm just a user I too do begin to suspect a sensor issue, I mean noise is basically the sensor picking up electrical interference and if the sensor has an issue I guess this is one of the results you could get. I've searched for other with this kind of issue but haven't found any, if you do remember where you've seen it you're more than welcome to share the link. Thanks for the info! :)

I talked to the repair center yesterday and as I mentioned in my previous post they claimed that there isn't anything wrong with my camera since the sensor calibration they made two weeks ago passed without any errors. After looking at my samples they agreed to send the dng's to Pentax since they don't know what's wrong with it. Hopefully I'll hear from them as soon as possible. I'm really glad I have the K-3 as well so I can compare and easily point out the difference.

Have gotten a rather annoying issue with my K-3II, especially mid and dark tones are filled with noise and basically makes the camera unusable. Exposing after the sky and then just lift the dark areas is out of the question and it's also a lack of details due to the noise. DR not so much and this happens at ISO 100. Made a comparison between my K-3 and K-3II and it's quite a difference. Did a lot of TS about 3-4 weeks ago and then the camera was sent to the service point here in Sweden who adjusted the sensor via some software but the problem remains. Will contact them again so that I can send the camera back for further investigation.
Will add some sample pics, two dng-files in dropbox and one jpeg which is a screenshot of when comparing K-3 and K-3II in Lightroom at 1:1, no editing made in LR.

Does anyone have any idea of what is causing the issue?

Which normal zoom to buy if AW/WR is required?

I already have the DA* 50-135 so just for the long end I'm not in need of the DFA 100 WR, but I'm thinking of getting one for the macro part though. DFA 100 WR can be found for just under $600 here in Sweden which for this area is a good price. :)

I've been eye balling the prices over there but I live in Sweden so unfortunately with freight, customs and vat it won't be that much cheaper than buying it locally in Sweden. And since the international warranty is no longer available I'll have to send it to the states for any warranty issues. Thanks for the tip though. :)

Sounds good, there is still some hope left. :)
That's also what I've been thinking that the 20-40 and 16-50 aren't really for the same type of use, I actually have a lot of photos taken below 20 mm with my 17-50 which is the main reason I haven't bought the 20-40.

I agree, the range for the 16-85 is really appealing. Perhaps a bad comparison but I bought my K-3 with the 18-55 kit lens but it doesn't get any camera time, I've tried it but I always ended up with the faster 17-50 especially at dusk and dawn.

I already like my Tamron so why not one more. ;)
It was on my radar but the listed price for that one in Sweden is $1844, a bit too much and I'll be losing a lot at the wide end. :)

I'm actually starting to warm up to the idea of buying the DA* 16-50. If I had the money I'd buy the upcoming 15-30ish and the 24-70 and why not the 70-200 as well. :D
Many thanks for your help.

Which normal zoom to buy if AW/WR is required?

I have a Tamron 17-50 2,8 today which performs quite well but has no weather sealing what so ever so was thinking of getting a normal zoom with AW/WR.
Not that easy though, I have always been set to buy the DA* 16-50 since I'm really happy with my DA* 50-135 but looking at reviews and what users are saying I begin to hesitate.
Not due to the SDM (updated in 2012?) even if the 16-50 seems to be the one with most SDM issues but rather issues with softness, chromatic aberrations and distortion and this on a 1100 dollar lens. Looking at the lens review which Pentaxforums did it got beaten by both Sigma and Tamron, so I would be paying quite a lot of money just to get AW but with no gain quality wise except for the build quality?

I checked for an alternative and there are two as to my knowledge, Pentax HD DA 16-85/3,5-5,6 ED DC WR and HD PENTAX-DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR.
First of all I'm a bit concerned regarding WR, as I understand it's the lower level of weather sealing which isn't really dust proof. Is that an issue in snow, let's say being above the tree line in hard wind? The dry snow we have here in Sweden sometimes tend to make it into places it shouldn't. But perhaps snow is completely different to dust when it comes to weather sealing?

However the main concern for the 16-85 is f/3,5-5,6 which is kind of a deal breaker for me. For the 20-40 I'm hesitating due to the narrow reach of 20-40, I actually tested to keep it within 20-40 at some times this summer when shooting with the 17-50 and found myself to miss the extra reach 17-50 gives at several occasions. I'm shooting a lot of landscapes/nature and am afraid that the 20-40 isn't really suitable for that kind of shooting, it feels like it's more of a street lens.

So I'm kind of back to the DA* 16-50 which according to reviews and users aren't that good as my current Tamron 17-50. Is it really that "bad"?
Any other suggestions?

It's gone so far that I've actually found myself looking at other brands just to have more lenses to choose from. But it's most likely just a spur of the moment feeling since I'm really satisfied with my K-3. :)

You can also change the ISO range for ISO Auto and decrease the max value, then set shutter speed accordingly. Or perhaps use the M mode. :)
I had some issues with overexposing as well but found out that I had followed the recommended settings in the PF review which contained assigning exposure bracketing to button Raw Fx so from time to time I accidentally pressed Raw Fx without knowing it and got +0,3 EV resulting in overexposure. :o

50-135 and a 60-250?

I spoke to the seller yesterday, got a good impression. Lens bought new in a local store in January 2014.
As it looks now I will be experiencing how it would be to own both 50-135 and 60-250. If it comes to a deal it won't happen until in the end of June so still time to think about it.
Would also like to get a weather resistant replacement to my Tamron 17-50 F2,8 which basically is a DA* 16-50, need to figure out which comes first regarding WR and more reach.

DA* 16-50 or DA 16-85mm

I'm in kind of the same situation. I got a Tamron 17-50 f2,8 today which is a great lens especially when looking at the price but it doesn't have any weather resistance or seal so I'm looking for a replacement.
And there isn't that much to replace it with if I want WR and f2,8. We have the DA 20-40 f2,8-4 WR but replace 17-50 with 20-40, nah. Then we have the DA 16-85 f3,5-5,6 where 3,5-5,6 grants for a nah as well. I have a DA 18-55 3,5-5,6 and really miss 2,8 the few times I've used it. And the DA 17-70 lacks WR so basically the only lens left for me is the DA* 16-50 but not as new, will look for a used example preferable not to old as rumors says a change was made to SDM in 2011-2012 or similar.
