I used to own a K100D Super but it was long ago. Perhaps I misremember. Anyway, on the K-S2 and on the KP, the release is purely mechanical, only the user can free the internal flash on both bodies.
On the K-S2, my safe upper ISO limit was 1600. Even if 3200 was perfectly usable, I thought noise could be easily seen. But yes, it depends a lot of people, and also a lot of what you are actually photographing.

The flash will never pop up by itself.
If you want no flash, do not open it. If you want flash, open it beforehand, and it will be used (whether needed or not).
It's the same behavior on other Pentax SLR cameras with built-in flash as far as I know.
I never had read-only files with my K-S2 though.

I would recommend the Pentax KP + HD DA 16-85 + HD DA 55-300 PLM. A ready-for-everything combinaison with outstanding IQ.
If you really need an all-in-one lens, the Sigma 18-300 is what is currently best for Pentax. But with an APS-C body (K-70 or KP), like the Canon 90D, but not with a full-frame body (K1 II), even if it -can- work in crop mode. That would be a waste, though, in my opinion.

K-70 was introduced in late 2016, so obviously they all got the improved solenoid.

Why did you up-sample the images to 96 megapixels? I fail to see how doing this can be helpful, even for comparison purpose. Comparing straight 24 Megapixels with 1:1 crop would probably make some sense.
Back to the images you have shown us.
For 18mm F3.5, I do not see a tie, I much prefer the 16-85 image, more detailed, without CA, unlike the 18-55.
For 18mm F8, it's true that the 16-85 is the one with CA. On the other hand, why the 18-55 image has been taken with a shutter speed four times quicker? Were you in a kind of changing weather with sun going on and off? Harsh lighting at the time of shot could explain the 16-85 CA.
For the 55mm shots, it's another thing, the 18-55 indeed looks better.
That said, that is not proof by itself of sharpness (or lack thereof). It could be a focus issue. You also have to take into account field curvature, which means plane of focus curvature. Edge may be, or not be, in focus. You shot wide open with long focal length, so the depth of field is thin.
If i were you, I would try to shoot at 55mm at a smaller aperture (the same for both), auto-focusing on something far in live view to rule out any focusing error, and compare 24M images. You might get more reassuring results.

I thought this new ad popping was something recently added by Adam, but apparently it is not intended. Good luck finding the source. My own experience is that it could be a viral code that inserted itself into the forum software.

If the K-70 works correctly with the 55-300 PLM but not with the 18-135, your body probably faulty (aperture block failure). I doubt the 18-135 itself would be defective. There is a small lever at the back of the lens. Try to push it gently, and look inside the lens. Pushing the lever on the side should open the aperture. If it works, your lens is fine. If the lever is missing or move freely without moving the aperture, your lens is broken.
Cameras suffering from aperture block failure will only works correctly with KAF4 lenses (like the 55-300 PLM, but they are very few of them), and lenses with aperture ring (off the A position).
If you can handle some soldering, ordering a white solenoid and try to fix it yourself is your best bet for a less costly and permanent solution of this problem : Tutorial/Repair Pentax K-70 with aperture-problem: Exchange solenoid - PentaxForums.com |

The "best" zoom lens, for landscape and starscape, would be the DA* 11-18. A much more affordable alternative is the Sigma 10-20 F3.5. When it comes to starscape, the latter is my best lens (I don't have the former, too costly for me).
DA 15 is a very good choice (and light) for landscape, but I do not know how it performs when it comes to starscape.

It is probably aperture block failure on the K50. About the manual lenses, you need to enable "use aperture ring" in the settings, otherwise you won't be able to take a shot.

K1 in crop mode has same resolution than K50. Besides, K50 has a AA filter and is cursed by solenoid issue, which worsen with non usage. Sell your K50!

KP bundled with 18-50 do exist. On Amazon France you can get that kit for 1115 € (yes, all KP are costly in my country currently).
Bundled with KP, we can also get 18-135, or 35 plastic fantastic, or 18-50 + 55-300 PLM with emphasis on small size right in the description!
But no 18-55.

I used to have the 18-50 (DA-L). My main criticism is poor handling. This lens is hard to deploy and retract, and it's impossible to do if the lens is not mounted on a body. Manual focusing is lagging behind, and noisy (DC motor is clearly audible, especially since its action is delayed). The only other retractable and focus-by-wire lens, the DA 55-300 PLM, on the contrary, got everything right.

UncleVanya, he did mention "PLM" in the thread title! ;)
To add on that, I use a generic PH-RBG58 on my 55-300 PLM lens (I bought it used, hood was missing). It works without vignetting, but I admit it is quite cumbersome not to be able to mount it reversed. I wish the official hood was less costly, or if I could find a compatible one.

I'm a French native speaker. Even if I can read and write English easily, I admit I have difficulty with that word : "lens". I do not think I have ever used "lense" ; especially since Firefox will underline in red that word, but only on the PC version. Lens in singular, Lenses in plural. Will try to remember!
If I did make that mistake once, please accept my deepest apologies. I know I post a lot about lenses, you know, LBA and so on.
But I would not mind to receive a PM to help me improve my English if I used an incorrect spelling. I used to use the word "Ancien" in a online-game (without spellchecker available) all the time until someone kindly told me that it was "Ancient".

I received the 16-85 yesterday, in its box, sealed, and with warranty. For that price, it was a true bargain.
Plastic hood seems rather fragile. My DFA 50 Macro has a metallic hood, the feel is clearly not the same!
Dull weather prevent me to try it right now, but I noticed there is some light stiffness when zooming in around ~80mm. Zooming out is perfectly smooth. Is that to be expected?

I didn't buy the KP for its look, but I have to admit that it looks good! So tiny with the S grip, especially when you attach a large lens like the Sigma 17-50 F2.8. I try to imagine how it looks with the DFA 150-450 or another monster lens like the recent DFA*.

The 18-135 is not using a SDM motor, so this cannot be cause of the failure. The 100 F2.8 macro is using screw-drive. Only DA* 300 is actually using a SDM motor, which can fail.
Try using all 27-points autofocus. Try also focusing in live view. The result of those tests can help us pin-point what's wrong with your 18-135.

Thank you everyone. I pulled the trigger on a new 16-85 for a price I could not refuse (420 €).
An used 16-85 required 390 €, while the cheapest new 18-135 needed as much as 480 €. Choice was quite easy.
Even if 85mm long end may be limitating, I thought 135mm could be as limitating, and that's what the 55-300 is for. On the other hand, 16mm can be definitely useful and I have only non-WR lenses covering wide angle.
Thank you for helping me feeding my LBA with something. I will come back in two weeks to bug you for yet another lens. |

There is no point indeed to bring it to a repair facility... But you can always try to fix it yourself. You can try to umount the rear screw and see if you can set the blade where they should be! Lens's dead, so there is no risk trying.
Warning, use only JIS screwdriver.

Those are not shutter blades, but aperture blades, if I understand correctly. You say they are moving freely inside the lens? Do you still have the aperture lever on the back of the lens? Can you still push it? Will it returns to the initial position when released? Does it move the aperture blade inside the lens?
Anyway it's the first time I hear of loose aperture blades after one month of sleeping on a shelf... That looks like extremely bad luck.

Thank you all for your answer.
It looks like that if I really want a single lens for a trip, the 18-135 is the one who fits the most.
But we do not buy DSLR cameras to use a single lens on them. Many people mentioned the 16-85 to be paired with the 55-300 PLM I already have. It looks like a deadly combo.
I am a bit worried about quality issue mentioned here and also somewhere else on pentaxforums about some 16-85's, but perhaps it is not worse than with any other lens? Would buying an used 16-85 be mostly safe?
