The stores do not have any Pentax bodies left to try the lens on. I brought my own body in and tested the lens, expecting a problem. I was correct. The motor drive has failed and the lens won't autofocus. As soon as you buy it you will have to send it in for repair.

Landscape Alpenglow in Banff Canada

Hi everyone. I haven't posted in quite a long time, been really busy. But I've still been taking pictures along the way. Here's one I took on vacation a week ago (Aug 2020).

Alpenglow lights up the top of high mountains at first light, and the mountain face is fortunately parallel to the horizontal light. The entire top got lit up for a few seconds with a beautiful red-gold color.

This is Mount Rundle in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The Bow River wends in a circle in the midground and there are hoodoos in the foreground. The sky blue color of the river is due to fine silt from glacial meltwater.

Some parts of the mountain in shadow are also being lit up by the alpenglow.

Interesting videos. So from what I read/see on the internet, early in WWII a standard Red Army infantry tactic was the frontal assault, especially when they were encircled and had to break out. Masses of men would charge straight into machine gun fire. Small wonder casualties on the Eastern Front were so massive. Apparently the average life expectancy of a Red Army private in Stalingrad was only 24 hours.

If you are into WW2 history or history in general, this is a fascinating piece. This is an actual battle rifle from the Second World War.

This is the main rifle used by the Whermacht in WW2, called a Karibiner 98 kurz, or K98. This one was built in 1943 according to the markings. I snapped a pic with my cell phone when it was being taken out to the range. Up close the metal parts look, well, like they've been through a war.

This example was used and carried by a German soldier and captured by the Red Army on the Eastern Front, probably in 1945. It was then stored in a Russian army arsenal until it was released as a surplus, then eventually sold in Canada. So the last time it was out in the open was about 70 years ago.

One wonders at the stories it could tell if it could talk!

Since this is Remembrance Day weekend, I will mention my grandfather fought in Asia in WWII for the Allies. I had another uncle who served. My spouse's uncle fought for Canada in Europe. My grandfather and uncle died before I was born so I never got to know them. Thank you to all who served and are serving!

This is Canada and there are strict firearms laws so we won't get who owns this or other details. Everything is legit, though.

Sports Perfect Judo throw

Event was the Canadian National Judo Championships in Calgary, Alberta in May 2017.

A perfect Judo throw to win the match. Blue is throwing white straight backwards. I haven't seen a "sacrifice" throw pulled off so well.

Other things:
- Out of camera jpeg, no cropping. I wanted the people in the back to give some context to the event. I was one of the photographers for the event.
- Blue is my oldest, who has been doing this since he was 6. He turned 17 just before the tournament.
- The last one in the sequence is a bit blurry. But it shows the end of the throw.

Judo practice by a couple of youth athletes. Pic taken in Edmonton, Canada.

These 2 were going at it pretty hard. The one in white ended up using a blend of tani otoshi and ura nage on the one in blue.

Blue was able to spin out as a countermove in the last possible moment.

Both of them have been selected to represent the Province of Alberta at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

I never understood why the FA24-90 was ignored even during the film days. A great lens that let you go ultra-wide. It was paired with the MZ-S in the Pentax brochures & ads.

The K-1 is in stock in camera shops here in Western Canada.

Anyone identify this problem? Saving images on K-50

Hi everyone.

Can anyone identify this problem I am having with a K-50? Started happening a couple months ago. I have recently been using the camera to do only sports, so camera is in burst mode.

When I power up the camera and fire a burst of several images, the images fail to save. Sometimes I can find out only by reviewing the images as the camera won't tell me the pics failed to save. Sometimes I find out right away as a I get a memory card error message and the camera's electronics locks up, I can't even turn it off. I end up having to pop out the battery and re-insert it to get the K-50 working again.

The problem goes away if I re-power up the K-50 and wait a few seconds. I usually take a test picture and it is usually fine.

Memory cards are good quality Sandisks. The level of battery doesn't seem to matter, the camera can do this whether it's full or partially charged.

Thanks in advance.

Here is the #1 best way to nail that perfect reflecting pool in a landscape photo.

1. Use a tripod. Get a high quality tripod and ball head or pan tilt head. This is a must.

2. Here's the key to getting that perfect reflection photo. Get low. Get really low. Get your tripod and camera as close to the ground as possible. This is the single most important thing you have to do.

It's really that simple. This picture was made with my 4 section tripod. The camera was just above knee height. The focal length was 70mm @ F11 and the reflecting pool was about 15 feet from the camera. This image made it into PPG.

You will be amazed at how great your pictures will turn out by just getting low to the ground.

Please vote for me... I've love to win the lens!

I didn't realize there were so many Judo people on the forum. I always thought it was a bit of an esoteric martial art in North America.

But to clarify... in Judo tori is the person who is carrying out the throw and uke (pronounced ew-kay) is on the receiving end. In the pic white is tori and blue is uke.

These 2 were going at it pretty hard. White executed a hard leg sweep (Uchi Mata) and followed through with the rotation as blue held onto his lapel. In a tournament if blue lands on her back the match is over. If she landed on her side or stomach the match continues and white would have gone straight into ground-fighting techniques, my guess is a submission hold (choke or arm bar) as white is well positioned for this.

Oh, and just because blue is a girl doesn't mean she isn't as tough as the boys. She is just as capable of doing the same. "Judo... the gentle way".

Wow, you reached a really high level in the sport, congratulations! The throw he is using is Uchi Mata. (For non-Judo people, it's the inner thigh throw). As you can see, he is continuing the rotation after he completes his leg sweep.

Thank you everyone for your comments. Muchly appreciated!

Judo is a sport that can be elegant, almost balletic.

Both athletes in this pic have won medals at the Canadian National Judo Championships. The one wearing white is my son.

This image was made just as both athletes' feet left the mat and they were rotating in mid-air.

Technical details: 1/350 sec, f3.5, DA*50-135. The only post-processing are minor adjustments and cropping in Lightroom. Taken in City of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada.

That bag is a good & handy item. It's a copy of the Maxpedition "Fatboy Versipack". I actually just bought the OEM version as it is available in a left handed model.

If you want to carry more and not have it shift on your hip when you move around get the Maxpedition Mongo Versipack. NOTE: The "S" versions of the Versipacks are for lefties! I also just bought one of these.

if you are going for the weekend and/or need to carry a bunch of other stuff, get something like a 5.11 Rush backpack. I have a 5.11 3 Day Rush backpack and you can also load a hydration bladder in it.

All Maxpedition and 5.11 bags have molle, strap loops and Velcro that allow you to attach all sorts of other gear like tripods, hiking poles, etc. The 5.11 and Versipacks are extremely comfortable to wear. You also need padded inserts for camera gear though. I cannibalize old camera bags for the inserts and I have some Velcro strips that I purchased separately for this.

You do not want to be this close to a grizzly bear. Ever.

They don't fear people and they can outrun a sprinter.

Good thing the picture taker was in his car. Or at least he should have been.

That's definitely it. If you look at the pics from the flea-Bay auction you can see that it is left in manual focus position. The original poster simply needs to push the af/mf clutch forward. There is nothing wrong with the lens.
