True. Otherwise we would have had FF Pentax since the MZ-D.

R&D and profit.

Hi folks,

Since the announcement of new lenses and APS-C flagship a question has been lingering. What sort of sales figures a company/Pentax needs to return profit for their investment in R&D of a lens or a camera. I am not at all expert in economics, corporate planning, production, hi-tech etc. so would really appreciate input from those more geared in this topic.

I know the question is quite general and broad, but if you can bring examples to the table that would help me to understand. For example: how much could be the R&D (and other related) cost of the new 21mm FF lens and what sort of number they need to sell to justify production or just make profit.

Thanks!

I had a decent set of FF lenses for my film cameras. It was cheaper to invest into a FF body than buying an APS-C and getting a set of DA lenses. So any upgrade is future proof, keep the lenses, change only the body. My philosophy is: never sell a good lens, so the lenses I own have been with me for 4 to 14 years. This obviously means that some (if not all) are not the newest, but who cares when they are Ltds, the K85/1.8 and so on. Belters...

Oh, those expectations. I keep hinting quietly that Pentax should acquire the licence for Sigma's 20-40mm long discontinued lens. Sort out the firmware, upgrade coating, add WR and DC and it would sell like hot cake.

Pentax K100D battery issue

Hi,

Back then I had the same problem with my K100D. I started using rechargeable Li-ion CR-V3 batteries instead and the problem disappeared. You'll need two to operate the camera.

Why are Used Wide Angle Lenses so Expensive?

I have owned 90% of my lenses for more than five years, 1-2 for more than a decade. My philosophy is: never sell a good lens. That is why after so many years I still have my Pentax F 28mm which is a great lens on FF, and the Sigma 20-40mm. I guess some other folks follow the same route, especially that new Pentax lenses are expensive and selection is not too wide.

Pentax k1 2019 still worth it?

Go for the upgrade. The K-1 is still a relevant camera, and its 36MP will still be for a good while. I do not think Pentax will release anything for a long time that would make me change or upgrade from my K-1. Not unless they intentionally brick my camera with a firmware upgrade to make me buy something new... LOL

Thanks. To be honest I still had to put my elbow down on a solid surface to support the lens better. And probably half the credit goes to Pentax engineers for the SR system. :)

This is a pretty good source for older Sigma lenses.

And a very good price for this lens from Park Cameras...

Indeed, the second one has a bad link even on Sigma's website from their listing page. But the first one was made in K-mount, it clearly says on the bottom of page. Just need to scroll all the way down.

I was lucky to get to know his works. We went to a carboot sale a few years ago and came across two of his framed photos for 2. Added a few more since, mainly bought from ebay.

Now, you would consider images like this not worth the K-1 to use for. Out of focus, underexposed, blurred... Still my favourite of my miss telling me the dinner was ready while I was playing with my camera in the living room. That is what men do while waiting to be fed... LOL
For those who want to check it out the picture hanging on the wall is from photographer Francis Meadow Sutcliffe. I like his works, have a few prints hanging on our walls.

Thanks! I read the display years ago, but did not remember who he was. I was only 10 when he died anyway. I love that cycle lane between Harpenden and Luton, nice scenery and no cars.

FA43 advice

Hi,

I do not know about others, but I found this article helpIful:
How to optimize focusing accuracy with large-aperture lenses / explore | RICOH IMAGING

I have fine tuned most of my lenses to my K-1 including the FA43 according to their recommendation. For me at least it made a big difference in AF accuracy and keeper rates, especially with the FA77, but the FA43 improved a lot as well.

So because you will have limited time with the lens it is probably a good idea to start with the steps described in the article to avoid disappointment.

I hope it helps.

Sigma 20-40mm firmware, EXIF and AF issues related?

I know since having a K-7 that this lens has some problem firmwarewise. I even spoke to Sigma UK a few years ago if they can do anything about it. They offered me that I can trade this lens in for a modern offering. Considering I only bought this lens for about $100 in 2010 I'd rather keep it. Fortunately it has no other issue than AF inaccuracy.

Thanks for the input!

Sigma 20-40mm firmware, EXIF and AF issues related?

Thanks for the clarification. This lens was released in 2001, so firmware was probably more geared to AF systems of the era. On the other hand my EX APO 70-200mm 2.8 and 180mm 3.5 Macro are roughly from the same period with no AF issues whatsoever with my K-1. It is a pity that the 20-40mm is an exception.

Sigma 20-40mm firmware, EXIF and AF issues related?

I have just discovered, that my pictures taken on my K-1 with my Sigma 20-40mm lens have different lenses registered in the EXIF. As some of you may know the Sigma 20-40mm is a great lens with even greater problem with the firmware and AF accuracy.

I am not sure, but this might be an answer, that the camera is trying to use its AF preset lens data or whatnot to focus the 20-40mm only to cause confusion during the process. It seems the camera can not decide which lens it is so struggles. That is just my interpretation. I am not an IT guy or a camera engineer.

I have never had any of the lenses mentioned in the EXIF, especially not since the K-1 is on board in my kit.

I have checked on multiple photos and it seems to be a general problem. I have yet to locate any photos with the right (20-40mm) EXIF data.

Sigma 20-40mm 2.8-4 on K-1. Not photoshop. This statue is on a hill near Luton, UK. I think he was some famous local.

P.S.: My K-1 registers this lens in exif as being the Sigma 17-70mm which I have never had.

There is this lens as well:
Arsat 35mm F/2.8 PCS H Lens Reviews - Russian and Zenitar Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

I had it about a year ago, came as part of a lot I bought. Pretty neat little lens, I even tried it on my K-1. The only thing that made me sell it was its limited use for me. Other than that I would have probably kept it if needed.

Mine came with a K-mount which I think was a conversion from M42, but with shift lens it does not matter too much as they are pre-set aperture lenses as far as I know.

So K-1 plus this can be an option, although this lens is only 35mm focal length.

Do I NEED a full frame camera? (Please help with arguments either way...)

For me buying the K-1 was a reasonable step, but only because I have not stopped using film. So when the K-1 came out, I only had to invest into a body, but no lenses (I had had sold my APS-C camera and lenses long before the K-1). So I have not really handled an APS-C for about five years, but judging by reviews of recent APS-C cameras I would probably go with one if I were you. They get good reviews.

On the other hand it is true, that you can get a K-1II for as much as the new flagship that comes out next year, and you can use crop lenses as well as FF.
