FA* 28-70/2.8 vs FA 28-70/4 vs FA 28-80

There are several versions of the F 28-80mm f/3.5 - 4.5. The original and expensive (twice the price of an F50mm 1.4) SMC version which is quite rare and a Takumar plus an F version that isn't SMC and has Pentax-F painted on the barrel. The latter looks to be made in the same factory as the Takumar. The boxes even have different coloured lettering the SMC is red and the non-SMC is black.

The SMC version is excellent and has quite a sharp macro position at 80mm.

One on ebay today didn't even have a bid on it (25 starting)

Pentax 28-80mm Zoom Lens | eBay

The A series is the same... SMC, plus a cheaper version and a Takumar. The F SMC is better than the A SMC (just).

My FA 28-70mm f/4 is quite poor.

You get used to it after a few days. Obviously a camera that is different to what you are used to so it can't possibly feel the same :D Buy another K10D if you want it to feel the same :(

The buttons are a different matter the Green button is now in an awkward position to use when looking through the viewfinder and the Preview button is too far away.

The leap in IQ makes up for it though.... at last a camera that can be used in something other than bright sunlight

Have you seen this test site, which mentions PF with the K-5 compared to the K-7?

See the comments at the bottom: SMC Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 AL ERPhotoReview

Also this page with example photos: SMC Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 AL ERPhotoReview

I have noticed it on my K-5 compared to a K20D.

I had that problem with 2 Sandisk Extreme cards on a K10D years ago. I changed
to Lexar and never had the problem again. It's a fairly common problem not all
cards work in all equipment.

Quite a good performer in lens tests on film in the 70's. I seem to remember it focused to 3ft. It achieved this with a double helix screw design, but the threads used to get locked and there were a lot returned as faulty. I suppose any still usable don't have this problem.

No idea how they will perform on digital.

Formatting in the Pentax camera is the safest way to go. It makes sure that the format is 100% compatible.

The Panasonic formatter is a great piece of software for formatting and checking cards on the computer, but I would still do a format in the camera before use.

Strictly speaking because it's a fairly simple FAT32 format it should be the same no matter where it was formatted. At least formatting in camera puts your mind at rest knowing that it works OK for millions of other Pentax users.

That sounds highly usable, but different size files give different results. You would be better copying say 300MB of K-x photographs and timing that. At least you not getting 2-4MB/s which is common with a lot of cheap external USB readers.

Toshiba White's if you can get them are probably the cards to go for. I've used load of them no problems and faster than anything else I've got. Made in Japan not China.

A lot of people have had problems with Sandisk as well. I've had two faulty Extremes and it seemed a lot of trouble sending them back from the UK I think we have to send them to Belgium or somewhere in Europe.

I've stopped using the Transcend Class 10 I mentioned earlier. Won't even work proper for transferring files from computer to computer. Stay well clear.

I've bought a PNY Premium card which seems to be quite good and a lot faster than I expected.

I assume that you have formatted it in the camera? Not sure what you mean by pre-formatted state? Is something.... card or camera telling you the card is not formatted?

The easiest solution is get another card and leave the original alone until you check if the 2nd card works properly.

Regarding optimal F Stop and Teleconvertors

It's not quite as simple as just a magnifier ;) The TC loses definition and contrast more at the edges than at the center.... stopping down might improve this. It can also increase purple fringing on some lenses and stopping down will usually reduce this.

One disadvantage with TC's that never gets mentioned is the reduced DOF due to the focal length being increased. The change in aperture is not enough to compensate and you may have to stop down even further if DOF is important.

It's always worth carrying out tests with a TC to see if it actually works with your lens in the 1st place and also to find the lowest aperture that you can get acceptable results at. Also look at exposure it can also be different. In the case you quoted check that you are losing 1 stop. The 1.4x or 2x quoted by the manufacturer is a nominal figure probably referring to a 50mm lens at their unspecified test distance.

The Pentax AF 1.7x for instance on a 210mm lens is a 1.3x at 2m and a 2.7x at infinity!!! so a big variation in the light loss and for people who prefer it over a 2x (me included :D ) it comes as a big surprise to find that the Teleplus 2x MC7 has exactly the same magnification and light loss...... just different manufacturers, with different ways of specifying products

The fastest cards by quite a big margin are ATP Promax. They are waterproof and dustproof as well. The Pro Movie people use them extensively. Unfortunately we can't get them here in the UK. The ATP card reader isn't all that fast though.

Several speed tests on youtube search for "sdhc card test camera" I tried putting a link in to a video, but it put the video on this page, which isn't any use because you need to read the results off the youtube page as well. This link direct to the search works LINK

I've had about three duff Sandisks will never use them again. Lexars are OK though and they also make the Kodak cards.

The test on the Transcend card used 500MB by mistake. I've just
re-done it using 100MB, same as the Toshiba White 8GB and it is
a lot slower.

are diabolical only managing 2 MB/s with 20 MB/s cards

That's interesting about the Trancend Class 10 I've just bought an 8gb one to use with
a Samsung GX-20 and yesterday when I put the card in having already used it about
3 times, the Camera flashed up CARD ERROR. I switched off and took the card out, put
it back in again then the camera on and this time it worked OK. I took about 10 photos
and looked at them on a XP Desktop and they were fine.

I looked at some from the day before on the same card but in the previous days
directory some of them showed up OK others just showed a Black picture. I tried
copying them to the HD but Explorer couldn't do it. I tried deleting one of them and it
couldn't do that either so I tried Scandisk on the card and it didn't find any errors
although it did say it would need to re-boot to fix any it found, which I thought was
ridiculous, Windows 98 could fix stuff on a removable drive without a re-boot.

Obviously something wrong so I took the card to a Windows 7 Desktop and ran
Scandisk on the card and it found truncated files in the Dir I had problems with.
I let it fix them but the images were messed up so I deleted the dir. Only about
12 unimportant images were lost.

This morning when I booted the XP machine up, Scandisk stopped it from starting until I did a scan. It seemed to fix it but I'm concerned that some files may be damaged.

I've never had any problems at all with my usual cards, Toshiba White in 4 and 8GB.

The Toshiba White's even though Class 6 are also faster.

I doubt if we ever actually use that with photos.

I'm very concerned that not only the camera noticed a problem, but also that
the previous days files were trashed. I'd return the card except I threw away
the receipt and packaging.

Lens tissues like all paper products are abrasive.... don't use. Microfibre or soft cotton such as Selvit cloths with a bit of breath to steam things up. If the airs too dry either put the lens in the fridge for a few minutes or wave it briefly in the steam from a boiling kettle.

Over-exposure with TC

I've noticed strange readings with TC's. If you have PhotoMe you can read off the meter readings with and without the TC to get the exact difference. Just type LV in the search box. I use the value for Segment 1.

It might have something to do with the values of TC's being just nominal one's i.e. a 2x could be 3x on certain lenses.

I just use trial and error to find the correct exposure when using a TC.
