Help, Pentax SF1 Shutter curtain doesn't open.

I just had a look at mine, if the back is open it will only fire at 125th of a second. The best way to check operation is to set the time to man. 1 second, remove lens and fire the shutter, you should be able to easily see the pressure plate from the front.

Eastman 5222 film

It is a very nice film, excellent for wet printing, also scans well (usually dries flat). I am finishing up my first 400 foot roll. I normally shoot it at 250 but you can shoot it at 400, you will lose shadow detail quickly though. For developing, I use D76 1:1 @10:00 min.

Unfortunately it does not have a cost advantage like it had in the past, so now I am starting to move to Tmax 400.

ME Super foam

Yes the foam should be replaced soon. If you keep up activating the shutter at this point, small bits of foam will get stuck on the mirror and some will be tossed onto the focus screen which will be impossible to clean without damage to the mirror or screen.

The good news is it is very cheap to replace & you can do it yourself.

35mm newbie, Question about ME Super film loading

What you will want to do is watch that window when you advance to the next frame, you will notice the lines move back & forth indicating that the film is moving through the camera. If the lines stay stationary as you advance to the next frame, you mis-loaded the film.

Pentax ME meter & AE stopped

A quick & easy thing to try is to take a clean soft pencil eraser to clean the camera battery contacts and also wipe down the batteries to remove
any oil from your fingers. That has worked for me a couple of times.

For the mirror, take the lens off and gently press on the foam mirror bumper, if it feels sticky or does not spring back readily it will need to be replaced.
If you continue to use the camera with a sticky mirror bumper, tiny bits of foam get thrown on the mirror & focus screen and can be impossible to clean off.

I also agree withe Steve, and recommend sending it in for a CLA. Eric has my ME super right now.

My rule of thumb is 1 hour @ F3.5 with Kodak Plus-x/Arista Prem 100
Negatives tend to be a little thin, one of these days I will try 1 1/2 or 2 hour exposures.

using Manual focus lenses with a Mz-6 body

Yes the lens should work. You will not get the aperature read out in camera, which is not a problem. Did you switch the camera to manual focus? There is a switch on the camera body opposite the lens release lever to switch to manual focus.

Got an SF1 today, and it will not load film! Help please?

First thing I would check is to make sure the rewind switch isn't stuck in the rewind position. I just looked at mine with the back open, the take up spool should turn when fired, I then held the rewind switch and the sprockets and take up spool freewheeled like they are supposed to. I hope this helps.

Pentax MZ-S with home-loaded film cannister

Just a quick update.

I bought a box containing a Burke & James bulk loader and 30 metal cassettes from my local camera shop. I've run several films through the MZ-7 using the metal cassettes without a problem. I've even noticed that the advancing film doesn't bog down the motor like the plastic ones did.

Just a possibility, check the door seal. I've had similar results and found that the film was light struck from a bad foam seal.

Hmmm, let me think . . . I don't see a down side to that, I think you should :D

Back to being serious, I am curious if metal re-loadable cassettes work with these cameras. Anybody use metal cassettes?

I have the same problem with my MZ-30 & ZX-7. I think its a combination of the felt light trap being tight and a weak rewind mechanism on this series of cameras. My SF1 works fine with them.

Probably a beginner's mistake, but why was my roll of film empty?

I'm not aware of any 100 speed b&w c41 film. If they ran traditional b&w film through c41 chems you would get a completely blank film. I believe the bleach step removes the silver image from the film.

Yes they do, its what I use, but there is not much room for error aligning the negs with the paper edges.

Bulk film loading?

I use two loaders, one is a Western (same as Watson) and a Prinz 66. The Western has a hinged lid and the Prinz has a removable lid. The way I load cassettes is to have a short as practical length of film sticking out of the closed film gate that I attach to the cassette. I them turn out the lights in the darkroom & open the film gate of the loader & position the cassette, I then close the lid on the loader & turn the lights back on to load the cassette. Doing it this way means that the last frame or two are not light struck.

The problem with the Prinz is that it is a bit fumbly locating the removable lid in the dark.

Tank Developing vs. Film Curl
Posted By Treker

I have several cameras with the reverse wind take up spool. If I'm having a difficult time loading because of the reverse bend to the film, I will coil the film up and load from the opposite end which usually won't have the curl. The only drawback with loading from the opposite end is using extra care to prevent getting finger prints on the film where the images are.

I use both plastic & stainless steel reels and they are both a pain with the reverse curl.

Thanks everyone.

Here is a shot of a fish cleaning / packing house that was in operation from the late 1920's to the late 50's early 60's on Lake Superior. The buildings are now part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

This building was used as a workshop for the boats and nets.
