K-x and K-7 selling well in Sweden

Wen I was in the store a few weeks ago I asked the girl how the K-x was doing (they are one of the not-that-many authorized Pentax dealers here in Belgium) and she answered: reasonably well...until now we have sold 3 of them... they did not take them in stock however.

I was surprised (and a bit disappointed) to hear that. But I'm glad they are doing better in Sweden.

How can I get good image quality from a K-x??

Manfred, to my best knowledge Faststone uses dcraw to develop raw pictures. And the default output from dcraw has some grey "haze" as some people call it, I know since one of the programs I use (Picture Window) uses dcraw too. It's hard to make it shine -although it has its benefits too.

I would suggest too that you try another program for raw development. You could try the one that was supplied with your camera, or e.g. Raw Therapee -it's free.

Interesting observation! I have such a subject too. Never thought it could be flash dependent. I'll try the Metz 58 as soon as I can (must be around the end of the year).

Affordable wide angle?

I wanted a wide angle lens too, and preferably an affordable FF one. So I bought the Zenitar 16mm f/2.8 fisheye at eBay for a fair price (it was below 200 EUR, incl. shipping, from someone who mentioned that the Zenitar lenses he sold were all checked for QC issues).

I'm very happy with it -my wide angle longing is satisfied. The fisheye effect does not disturb and I don't get tired of it (with my APS-C camera, I did not try it yet with film). Of course it's no 100% substitute for a normal wide angle but for me it comes closer than I thought.

Simple Hyperfocal DOF

"Most lenses have 1/3rd of the available DOF in front of the focus point" -no! Check a DOF calculator and you will see. It has nothing to do with "most lenses". And "try moving the focus scale just 1/3rd rather than halfway" -no, halfway it is.

How do you nail the focus shooting portraits with a shallow DOF?

Lowell, this 1/3 and 2/3 is just a (very general) rule of thumb. In this case it's more like 50/50. (But indeed DOF depends on other assumptions too!)

Indeed, I assumed about 1.75 feet. That makes a difference! I think I'll have to dig up my FA 35mm to get the feeling again.:)

For me the biggest drawback is the fact that these other focus points are slower than the central one. The autofocus of my Ds is slow; focusing with the non-central points is even slower and therefore no option in many situations. (That's my only reason to long for a different camera.)

But as said -I don't think that focus-recompose has anything to do with the problem here, the DOF must be about 2 cm (less than an inch) -about 1 cm in both directions. Any move will hurt. (And stopping down to f/4 won't help much.)

Your son was not holding still, that's the culprit IMO. Your depth of field must have been about 2 cm at that distance. Any move will bring him out of focus then.

(I don't think your focus point was lacking, since the eyes are the only area that have contrast here. And although focus recompose could cause an error of up to 2 times your foreground depth of field in this case, I don't think it really mattered compared to the boy's movement, since you did not rotate the picture that much.)

Info on the new DA L Lens's ?

Me too I was very glad to see that Pentax opted for AA's in the K-x. If the K20D would have had them, I would have bought that one (especially since it's only 699 EUR here, body only; but e.g. 66 EUR for one extra and "this camera only" battery). It will be a K-m or a K-x here.

K-m replacement, just like the old K-m

Both the cheap and the more expensive camera's have excellent picture quality, so they ought to differ in other features. Video seems an excellent differentiator to me.

And I don't see the need for video in an entry level camera. Many people do not need it -when my kids are grown up, I will be one of them- and so it is normal that not all camera's have it, no? Not all GSM's (cell phones) take pictures (yet), even if it is cheap to add the feature. Video in a DSLR cannot be implemented "for free": (a) the technology is still relatively new, and (b) people will demand *quality*.

K-m like housing, no top LCD, and it has LiveView. We will find out more next week.
I hope LiveView is possible on an AA-powered camera, otherwise I'll grab the last K-m.

What to buy k10d , k200d or k100d super
Posted By Andreas

The K100D Super is a camera that leaves nothing to be desired. You get outstanding image quality, also at higher ISO, and your files don't become too big.

Only drawback I could imagine for this camera is that it's only 6 MP. That's enough for virtually every picture you will take, but if you want to crop you might run out of breath.

A K10D or K200D are good choices too, but they seem to do less well at higher sensitivities. The K10D is the most advanced of the two, but out of these two I would chose the K200D (for the AA's, and because earlier K10D's had some issues).

A country flag is not a good idea IMO. It should not matter where you come from. It's a recipe for malicious remarks.

I did a quick Google search on the grip and I saw a UK price of 255 GBP, therefore I made up this 300 EUR. :) But I just saw it for about 250 EUR at FotoKonijnenberg (one of the cheapest online stores I know), so it will be less indeed. Reassuring!

I'm located in Rijmenam (somewhere near Mechelen). I did not try the K-7 yet, but I'm sure it's an excellent body.

Radu,

the K7 is an option indeed, but not this weekend! The battery pack adds about 300 EUR to the price. That makes it about 1500 EUR for body+battery pack, while I would be happy (if it had AF adjustment, just a debug menu would do!) with a K200D that costs less than 500 EUR.

(Add the costs of the divorce to this 1500 EUR and you'll understand!)

I will buy the next Pentax camera that has AA's and AF adjustment, I don't care what sensor they put in it (assuming it's decent!), 8-12 MP would be excellent.

If, in addition, it has Pentaprism + a level indicator, I'll buy it next weekend, no matter what the wife says.

It could very well be that video and AA's are incompatible, but read about the new Ni-Zn batteries like the Quantaray Super Z. Shelf life is at least comparable to Eneloop-type batteries, and they deliver higher voltage.

If that's not feasible, wouldn't it be a good idea to use AAA's instead of AA's ? Take 6 of them (instead of 4 AA's) and they deliver a higher voltage. Capacity will suffer, but 6x1000 mAh is not THAT much less than 4x2000 mAh. And give it a few years time... .

(Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not good in electricity.)
