Is great kit a mixed blessing?

Looking back - with the benefit of clarification that comes from reading responses - I think that I maybe conflated two issues in the original post - my own sense of being on a photographic plateau at the moment, and my sense that I'm not seeing much to inspire me on social media either. These aren't the same thing, obviously, but my speculation about a cause - that better kit might mean we work less hard for results which are therefore more likely to be mediocre has an interesting effect: - some people buy yet more expensive or challenging kit, and find new inspiration in that, while others go back to basics to rekindle the fun they had when they started out - and that reboots their passion for photography. And, I suspect many of us in reality do both. One thing I think we all agree on is that we need refreshment from time to time - and I certainly get a lot of that from reading other people's ideas here - I just have to make sure now that that drug isn't what's keeping me from actually taking photos :D

Truly great responses, folks - I love this community :)

I really admire your dedication. btw - I've chose to highlight this quote because it sums a lot up: I think that if you're sufficiently engaged, you'll be the guy who takes the memorable image in a place like that, and maybe my belief that I can be has wobbled bit, but it's not gone away.A lot of us, however, and I am very guilt of this, want to put a good eye above the sort of dedication you're talking about, and the truth is you need both.

just taken a snippet to represent the whole post - great stuff - thank you. I know I'm capable of great pics - I've taken some pretty good ones already, I'm just looking to get it over the line again, but missing the drive right now and looking for hat it takes to motivate myself. That's good advice.

I've just been looking over his website. My first reaction was What!!?? - but as I went on looking, fair-minded fellow that I am, I started getting pulled in by a sort of mesmeric ordinariness that creates a great sense of time and place. It's like I/we sometimes try too hard to put meaning into out pictures, and he just lets the meaning come out of what he photographs. Interesting.

I knew I wouldn't be able to get out on the night of the full moon, so I grabbed this one the night before - it actually worked out OK, as I'd been wanting to get one with sunlight still on the buildings and the moon rising behind, but I'd ben foiled by lurking cloud previously

Agreed - for hiking landscape photographers the weight and size advantage is definitely not something to be brushed off - I love my 70-200 f/2.8, but I love it less when climbing steep hills - and I've not got a w/a zoom yet, useful as it would be, because the 15-30 is just too big (as well as the problems with filters)

If primes are your thing, a used 31mm Ltd might cost at least as much as the 28-105 new, but shouldn't stray into 4 figures - its got great character (colour rendition and 3-D pop as well as central sharpness) and it's my absolute go-to street lens - but it doesn't have the versatility of a zoom, of course, or the weather sealing.

Question re: getting into Pentax digital medium format

I don't talk with any authority here - I used a 67 for years, but have never used MF digital - but the size of the sensor is not the end of the story - a modern high Mp FF sensor easily outresolves 35mm film, and I suspect a crop MF sensor outresolves 120 6x4.5 film. The only differences really are in the reach and FOF of the lenses - it that's an issue, then there it is, but otherwise the digital 645s produce stunning results.

I don't know if I'm just going through and end of mid life crisis, whether it's just the dilution effect so many images out there, or whether I'm just getting jaded - but I find fewer and fewer pictures on Flickr (I don't operate on instagram or others) that actually hold my attention.

One possible explanation is the number of training courses and many free YouTube How To videos, which tend to lead to everyone going to the same places and doing the same things - which is an issue, but I don't consciously do that, and I'm also finding my own images less interesting. ( :( )

I've also noticed that since being a regular browser of PF contributions, for better and worse, I've become much more kit aware.

What I am wondering is this: is modern kit so good that it's too easy to produce images that have an immediate impact, and does this too often stop us from going that bit further to produce something exceptional, meaningful - and memorable?

Any thoughts?

very nice pics - especially the top one - it's another of Explore's foibles that it sometimes explores multiple shots taken seconds apart, then nothing for ages sometimes - but we take what we get and are grateful for the exposure :)

I seem to have got stuck in a holding pattern for the last year or so of one explore at the beginning of each second or third month, entering somewhere in the 300s - no exception this month :)

One of the things I find exciting about this is the sense of direction - digital has brought a whole new way for cameras to be differentiated from each other, and Ricoh seem to know where they are going with Pentax. The sense of 'future-proofing' in these lenses suggests a continuation in the direction of sharp, low-aberration, beautiful imaging - beautiful being an actual lens design criterion - and that suggests that the cameras (FF at least) will continue to develop in this direction - which suits me fine. With so many photographs being taken these days, a design focus on quality and distinctiveness is surely more important than ever, and it looks like we're getting it :)

I don't have my K-10D any more - I gave it to my son a couple of years ago - but this shot with it and the kit lens won me a helicopter ride plus GBP300 cash (about 5 years ago), which is more than I've got out of my more expensive digital kit - so I thought it deserved a slot here :)
