Very nice example.

I just tried out my Q with a DA 55-300.

Not as good as the 300mm F4 but not bad & cheaper, with zoom flexibility

Q lenses programmable

A update for the Q lenses implies that they are programmable in some way.
I haven't come across this before.
Any ideas as to what this adds to Q performance?

Looking at the Q

If you don't want a camera that small there is no shortage of choice. To me, the whole point of the Q is pocket size with SLR type photographic control. I don't think you would want to carry too many lenses around either.

When size isn't the issue, I am looking forward to playing around with my k-mount lenses with a new crop factor.

As to price, some people may buy it because for its chic design but I would have thought enthusiasts would be the main market. From what I have seen, enthusiasts will pay whatever they can raise in cash or credit if they really want something.

Sigma 10-20mm or Tamron 10-24mm?

I have been researching this myself. It's not clearcut from any review I have seen.

I had a Canon fit Sigma 10-20mm before moving to Pentax & I liked it. I tried out a different Tamron zoom a few years ago & thought it felt very cheap & the zoom wasn't very smooth.

There are two 10-20mm Sigma. On Pentax, one is HSM & the other uses the camera drive I think. I think the Tamron is HSM.

Very interesting thread. I thought people might be interested in how in-camera HDR looks. These were taken handheld on my first trip out with the K5 (after waiting 6 hours for the battery to charge). Not a pro so please take that into account.

Pentax K Lens on 5D

I bought it on Ebay. I have now sold all my Canon gear (to fund a K5) so you can have mine for the postage plus a few quid (it's a pretty light item).

On my 50D you do need a lens with an aperture ring.

It also has the focus confirm chip. It cost around 15

I have a Pentax K to EOS adaptor. It worked OK, the Canon sees the lens as manual.

The main problem I find is getting the adaptor off the lens afterwards - a bit tricky

I have a K-x , Sigma 500mm/4.5 & 1.4x TC & it does AF (the Sigma website says otherwise).

A very nice picture.

Both the 500mm F4.5 & the 1.4x TC are pretty new to me & I haven't put anything online yet, but when I do, I will certainly send you a link.

I have a Pentax 300mm F4 which AF's quite well with my Pentax 1.7X TC so from what you say, I think I made the right choice for me.

When I want 500mm without the weight I use a Tamron 500mm F8 Mirror. With CIF & SR I find it a pretty good combination though obviously not as sharp.

It would be interesting to try the combination on a K-x.

Are you pleased with the lens? I was thinking about it but saw a used 500mm at a good price & I had to grab it if I wanted it.

With the 1.4x you have 420mm at F4 while I have 500mm at F4.5 but it is about 1Kg heavier.

I won't bother trying then.

I don't know about the optics but I think the Sigma TC is a nice piece of engineering.

If the Pentax TC is known to work I wonder if it would AF stacked on the Sigma TC. I'll give it a try sometime.

Yes, the screw drive linkage could well be the issue.

AF hunts all over the place with the 1.7TC. I have put the Sigma out of A before but had trouble getting it back in (the lens was 2nd hand though little used) so I'll leave that experiment for a while.

Sigma say the TC should be mounted on the lens before attaching the combination to the camera & not doing this seems to change behaviour. Since the camera is powered off, do you know why this might be?

This would be the Sigma web site Tele Converter matching list

I posted my experience with the combination because it seems to contradict the manufacturer's specification & it might be of interest to anyone considering a 500mm lens. This subject has been quite widely discussed. The normal conclusion is that the lens is well capable of AF with a 1.4 tc but is crippled by the manufacturers. This might be true, I don't know.

The Pentax 1.7x (which I also own) is a poor example because it does it's own AF. It does not work with the 500mm F4.5 btw.

The sigma spec sheet (& web site) says that it is manual focus only plus it has always been given as a disadvantage v Canon 500mm.

The AF limit is F5.6 where I have seen it.

I just bought a 1.4x TC expecting to have to short out the data pin to enable focus confirm & CIF, tried it out without modification & found that autofocus works.
It worked quickly even though the light was pretty poor.
Has anyone else found this?

Instead of using aluminium foil to short out contacts to force focus confirm & CIF, has anybody tried unscrewing a teleconverter & soldering the contacts inside?

There should be a "Treat attached lens as manual" option. This would logically be near the "Catch in focus" option. The complicated logic would be unchanged.

This would allow a lot more people to use CIF which in my opinion is often as effective as AF in nature photography. Many of the people who get CIF to work have to resort to mucking about with aluminium foil.
