Nikon FF and Pentax

I played with a Df at a local store today, and I am very much underwhelmed. It is the least comfortable camera I have held in a long time. The grip is not deep enough, the shutter button is too far back, and the top dials are clumsy to reach with the camera to your eye (thankfully, there are e-dials in more-or-less the proper place) - especially the exposure compensation one. The locking mechanism on the top-plate dial is not consistent from dial to dial either. And the right-side strap lung is placed where the strap will interfere with the right hand, because of the shutter release location.

IMHO, the Df is *all* about the retro look, and not at all "form following function". The K-7/5/5II's ergonomics (and the K-3's as well I suppose, although I have not handled one yet) are much better, as are those of the other Nikon DSLRs.

+1.

If the 20-40 is really WR and as small as the leaked pictures show, I will find it very hard to resist.

I'm much more interested/intrigued by the "more WR lenses" comment than by the "definitely a full frame for 2014" one...

But the best news of all is the Ricoh vs Hoya ownership comparison, IMHO :)

I wrote to him about that. He says the press information he got only mentions 1/2 and 1/3 EV. Maybe he just misunderstood, but he told me he'd try to get confirmation from Ricoh.

It's the EV bar at the bottom of the viewfinder.

Lens ID Error

Sigma reuses the same numeric ID in several different lenses. The association between that numeric ID and a textual name is done by whatever software you use to view the images. Maybe there is an option to force that software to use a specific name (for example, the perl Image::ExifTool library has such an option).

Don't forget street shooting/environmental portraits. It's focal lenght and small size make it almost perfect for these uses.

Here's another thumb up for the DA21: it is my 2nd most-used lens (FA35 is still 1st by a small margin), it is small, light, great color rendition, and sharp even wide open. And to be honest, I have yet to find one real-life shot where the barrel distortion is really apparent (ok, I don't shoot architecture with it).

I have to say that upgrading to a K-5 II from a K-7 has made this lens even more useful: the better high-ISO means that I can now often use in indoor-no-flash situations (eg. f/3.2 or even f/4 is usable where f/2 was required on the K-7).

Also, I sometimes find myself using it in a rangefinder-esque way: I try to frame within the AF markers (e.g. using them as "framelines") and crop in post to match. Great way to follow moving subjects and still see what is going on around them a bit through the viewfinder.

Now, all that being said, for weddings I think you would be better off with a f/2.8 "standard zoom" like the Tamron or Sigma 17-50.

Lagavulin 16 is my favorite so far, with Glenmorangie Port Wood and Auchentoshan not far behind. A friend of mine, however, tells me Ardbeg Uigeadail is the ultimate peaty goodness.

(I usually try to stay on topic, but I couldn't resist this one :)

I did the reverse: after considering the plausible specs and price point of an eventual flagship camera above the K-5II, I bought the latter in late december.

Yes and no. A picture taken at 50mm & f/2.8 on APS-C will look the same (angle of view & depth of field) as one taken at 75mm & f/4.0 on a full-frame.

However, the different apertures mean that, if you want to use the same shutter speed, the full-frame must use an ISO sensitivity one stop higher than the APS-C (thereby negating the advantage the full-frame has in that respect).

Also, but limiting yourself to exactly equivalent lenses aperture-wise, you would deny yourself the thinner DOF possibilities of the fulle-frame.

In a nutshell: if the intent is to only take equivalent pictures, one is probably better off not switching formats in the first place :) The decision to "upgrade" to full-frame should be motivated by the desire to make use of the capabilities it offers over APS-C, IMHO.

One could argue that issuing a FF camera is not the way to build Pentax's global market share. That may be exactly what those "Finance Guys" are thinking.
