SDM Status

There are times when one or both of my SDM lenses aren't used for awhile. Could be weeks. Events are typically DA 12-24 and Tamron 28-75 so if I have a run of those, the SDM lenses might not see use for awhile. But I can't imagine a month without use.

My working bag is a LowePro Nova 5 and all 4 lenses ( DA12-24, DA17-70, Tamron 28-75 and DA 50 -135 ) are kept front end down.
Two are mounted on camera bodies, two not. The 50-135 won't fit while mounted.

Sort of related, if I don't have a studio session for awhile, I'll plug in and fire my monolights. Capacitors don't do well if ignored for too long.

Just posted part of this in response to a similar question.

There is risk in any gear. Just got back my repaired, screw drive Sigma 100-300/4. Had a mechanical FA 645 80-160 fixed last year. But no problems ever with my 9 year old 50-135 or a five year old 17-70 bought used. I use both SDM lenses often. The 50-135 pays the bills with headshots & portraits. If it died tomorrow, I've no complaints and would send it off for repair.

Here are some recent 50-135 examples made last weekend during a jazz dance company rehearsal and performances. All with 50-135 on a K3II. All at 2.8. Focal length from 50 to 135mm, ISO from 12,800 to 1250. The high ISO is due to low light and the need for a fast shutter speed. For hours of this, I don't want anything heavier, especially with another K3II and wider lens on my other shoulder. If it died tomorrow, I've no complaints and would send it off for repair.

With my recently repaired Sigma 100-300/f4 and a K3II. Wide open at f4, full out at 300mm and ISO 25,600 - it was the Jazz Company, they always dance in the dark. Never got under 3200 at 2.8 with my. 50-135. Lots of 6400 and 12,800. December will be better, the "Nutcracker" with the Ballet company is mostly well lit.

First one uncropped, second slight crop. And yes, I did apply Noiseware at the default setting.

Call CRJ and ask. BTW, KEH did great job for me on a FA 645 80-160 and with their flat rate, I wasn't worried. Did take awhile to get parts though.

Have a Sigma 100-300/4 APO EX DG, bought new in 2010 from Ace Photo, last new stock I could find after Sigma said it was being discontinued. Got it for theater performances. With few exceptions, always on a loose ball head at rear of theater.

Earlier this year, I noticed the aperture ring wouldn't turn from "A" past f22. Wasn't an issue as I controlled aperture with camera. In June the camera aperture control stopped working, lens stuck open at f4. Called Sigma USA Service and got a "maybe" about repair, couldn't guarantee to have parts for a discontinued lens.

With Fall and Christmas performances coming up, needed to do something. Get it fixed or pick up a 70-200 and use with TC. Called the mother ship again, Sigma USA Service, to try for a definitive answer. No point shipping back and forth for zero chance. Got a service tech who said, "No, we can't repair that, it's past service life".

Plan B was call KEH service, a place that has fixed lenses for me. Told my story and they said maybe. But call CRJ.com, also in Atlanta. They used to be a Sigma repair center and had a good parts network.

Called CRJ (888-226-6678), explained the problems and the lady rattled off what parts that were probably bad!. Gave me a ball park repair figure, sent the lens Wed. they got it Friday. Three business days later, 1 Nov., got an e-mail with a detailed repair estimate. Called them, gave credit card info and asked I could get it back by 10 Nov., She said she'd put my request with the repair order.

Got UPS ship notice yesterday, and received the lens tonight, 8 Nov. Everything works! Repair Ticket says "Repaired Aperture Ring, Index Ring Replaced, Contact Housing Adjusted - Focusing General Clean & Check. The bill was $232 and $20 for return shipping.

I love happy endings. Camera Repair Japan

Southeast Camera in Raleigh:
Matches B&H prices but I pay NC Sales Tax instead of lying on my return.
I can stop by and grab a roll of 53" seamless in an hour vs days to ship
12' ft wide seamless is $100 cheaper than truck freight charges. Anything over 9 ft is UPS / FedEx $$$pricey shipping.
They stand behind the used gear they sell. Like KEH and UsedPhotopro
I buy used lighting gear, like Buff Einstein's with confidence at realistic prices and get fair trade for an AB800
I buy used cameras like, one of my K3IIs, for a fair price and all the time I want without interruption to test drive with my lenses. Left the store and paid for it with a portrait session.
They will not buy and resell my really used 100k+ shutter actuation camera bodies.
Always lots of used gear at good prices.
Gaffers tape, 120 film, gels, etc today

I've used B&H, Adorama, KEH, UsedPhotoPro and high rated Japanese eBay resellers. No one is the universal answer. But there are also local people who know their stuff, are ethical and practical business folk.

Mine has S/N 5002972 and it's labelled APO DG EX. Sigma won't repair it, "out of service life" said the guy at Sigma USA. Due to the courtesy referral from KEH.com, it's at CRJ (CRJ - CameraFix.com), also in Atlanta. Stay tuned.

Weird, I don't stick my nose on my Kindle, TV, magazine covers or books with photographs. My wife did want a 60"x40" canvas of a photograph I made of the Eiffel Tower. Printer only wanted 150 PPI. Hangs over a stairwell. Viewing distance is about 16 ft. Visitors will stand on the steps near a corner and remark on the detail. Compared to a 300 PPI paper print, its coarse but the point is, it puts you there, in Paris where most haven't been or makes the memory of those who have, vivid. Which is why my wife wanted it. Conversely, I was underwhelmed at an Ansel Adams exhibit. With few exceptions, the prints had much less impact than expected.

Like I said before, turn off everything that isn't necessary, including all the Jpeg stuff, use Raw ( been using DNGs for 10 years ) and like I didn't say before, use Manual exposure. It isn't hard and the black dogs will look black.

Why would you want to look "close up to a print"? I've seen people do that with paintings in the Musee d' Orsay but I'm pretty sure that misses the point.

Perfect Resize nee Genuine Fractals. But put it on canvas and 150 PPI is good. If it was a good exposure to begin with, there's not that much difference from 240 to 300 PPI on paper.

I was joking. It was intermittently overcast so hard light to soft light, point source to large source but there was enough direction for raking light to define some texture. And as for black dogs, an accurate exposure will do the job which is why I leave the dial on M and ignore the meter.

Yes and everything else that's unnecessary. Keep it simple. AF-C, Single Center Point and Rear AF. No shutter lag. No K-1 but it's worked on a K5, K5-IIs and K3II.

These were at f2.8, as wide as my lens goes.

I have a pair of K3II bodies, both bought used, one had 15K and the other less than 1 K. Shutters rated at 200K. Annually, I probably put 30K on each with dance and events. So maybe 6 years to hit 200K. They do everything I need, including portrait sessions. Especially portrait sessions. And except for portrait prints ( typically 11x14 and 16x20) , most of what I provide clients is seen on screens or maybe print articles so no need for K-1 sensor. As time goes by, I may pick up a used 645Z body to go with my 645N and 645 lenses but I can print everything I want with a well made exposure on a K3-II.

My lighting budget is a different story.

eBay is a much larger marketplace. All my used gear goes there, "Buy It Now. Make good presentation photographs and factor in the 10% just like Robert Camera does vs the same items on UsedPhotopro.com. And sell the camera and lens separately.

That's not a very high shutter count either. I kept a K5IIs body as backup for my K3II's that has 135K+ on it. The K5Iis body I put on eBay had 125K on it and the buyer asked before paying. Sent me a thank you when he got it. Sold for $275 plus $15 shipping.

I never heard that common wisdom. My use of zoom lenses is because I'm trying to fill the frame with the subject and I can't move about in theater or an event or don't have the time to do so. They enable my work.

I am certain that "one may get as much satisfaction or more shooting with primes than with a zoom". Pardon.
