Design a T-Shirt: Win a DA 70mm Limited lens!

Hi,
I don't post as much as I sould, but I just couldn't let this contest pass by without trying my chance. I see there are many great designs already posted. Here are mine:
The idea with the eye was to express the unique vision a "photographer" has of the world, even more when is a "Pentaxian photographer". The design is off centered so the red dot is on the left side, right above the Heart;)
The iris of the eye has nine diaphragm blades like the Limited lenses for better bokeh:D
I wish it was possible to use gradients and more color but as the rules stated only two colors...

The second idea is about the same but with a more realistic eye.

SMC-A 50mm F1.7 - repair help needed

Thanks for the replies.
I searched a little longer and found right here in the forum what is the piece that I need.
It's not as easy as I thought. The best solution, as you suggested is probably getting a cheaper A lens like the 28-80 to get the contact pin.

SMC-A 50mm F1.7 - repair help needed

Hello,
I bought cheap (25 euro) a SMC-A 50mm F1.7, but there is a problem, 2 spheres are missing.
The major problem is that little sphere that makes the A contact is missing, so it doesn't work in A mode.
Another one is the sphere that makes the clicks in the aperture ring is also missing, but that one is more or less irrelevant. Otherwise the lens in in good shape, the glass is very clean and the aperture blades are snappy.
I wonder if any of the nice folks here in forum as some advice to fix this problems.
Does anyone know some sphere of the same diameter as the missing that could be used, or some other workaround to fix the A contact?
Thanks in advance.

All the K-01 hate?

For me the only obvious flaw the K-01 has is the placement of the green button.
Before I bought mine I was reading all the reviews and criticisms, about AF, the SD rubber door... well, coming from a K20D I consider the AF fast and the rubber door is not a problem it closes fine.
Compared to the K20D, the exposure is better so as the focus accuracy in low light. I won't talk about ergonomics or lack of viewfinder because its a different kind of camera, not comparable to a DSLR.

I have a Metz 48 AF and it works fine in the K-01, direct or bounced, just like it worked in K20D.

Couldn't resist to buy myself a Christmas present:)
Unfortunately the discount price here in Portugal was only for the DAL 18-55 kit, so I have to make do with the original 40mm pancake.
Focus peaking really works, exposure is good and even AF is faster than with my K20D. What's not to like!...

Thanks!
I'm just starting with this lens, I didn't notice flare in mine but I also used a hood. I agree that at f2 is not bad.
The only negative thing about my copy of the J9 is the focusing ring, it is so hard to turn, it really makes focusing a lot more difficult than it should be. I bought mine in mint condition, but this seems to be a common problem with this lenses.

3 photos from my second russian lens - Jupiter 9 85mm f2.
I had an Helios 44M back ago, but not it was in very good shape and the results weren't up to the expectations. The Jupiter 9 is another story, I haven't used it that much yet, but for the moment I am very pleased with the results.
These were taken between f2,8 - f4. I' think that f2,8 is already very sharp in this lens, if DOF is enough I leave it there.
The 2nd and 3rd are K20D BW mode, I had never tried it before, but it seems to make a nice conversion.
(nothing planned, just playing around with camera and flash settings, taken in av mode with Metz 48 flash bounced in the ceiling)

-How would you rate the look overall?
Right now I rate it a 3,5. After the very short initial shock, this design is starting to grow on me. I am a designer (graphic) and it bothers me some comments people make about design without having a single clue what design is about. Without knowing the multiple constraints a designer has to deal with to get to the final object. One thing I now for sure, one can not judge design of an object, just by looking at a picture of it. You have to see it for real and use it to make your judgement. I bet that in 1964 nobody looked at a Spotmatic and said "this a beautiful camera", but now we look at a Spotmatic and we know it is a beautiful piece of industrial design. Most people have a very stereotipe way of looking to things and the first reaction when they see something new and different is rejection.
Right now, the only aspect of the design of the camera that keeps me from rating it higher, is the "chimney" under the control wheel.

-Does the 40mm fit the camera well?
Yes it does...But I wish it had 1 or 2 centimeters more and be a 30mm lens.
-Are you planning on buying one based on what you've read about it in the official announcement?
Most likely yes, but not to replace my other "brick" (K20D), I can find use for both.
-In buying a camera, how important is the look compared to the features? Very important, somewhat important, or unimportant?
The look of a camera, in the meaning that the look is the body, the controls, the buttons, the size, the shape, is a feature of the camera as important as the camera sensor or the ability to do video or anything else. To me, the only aspect of "the looks" of a camera that has no influence to usability, is color... but I'm not so sure about that anymore.
-How do you think people who've never heard of Pentax would react to this camera?
I think that people that never heard, or care about Pentax cameras will definitely have a reaction to this camera. And I think that's a good thing for Pentax.

CZJ Flektogon 35mm f2.4 + K20D.
It had a problem (one of the glass elements lose inside) when I bought it but seems good now, I used this lens almost exclusively on the summer vacations.
It's not a landscape lens but it woks very well when I can focus properly, at close distance it's amazing of course.

It reminds me of my DA 18-55 ALII. My pictures at 18mm no matter the aperture were all bad. But the 16-45 is suppose to be a lot better than the kit zoom right?

Thanks!
I am no expert, I was really nervous about opening this lens and mess with it. but it turned out easy, this must be on of the most easy lens to disassemble and doing maintenance, right?
Only after the job was done, I thought I should have take some pictures of the process, that would be helpful in the future.

Well, after some research on the web and finding this I took the courage to open the lens myself to take a look inside... It turned out so much easier than I thought.
I took off the lens mount (witch I found out it wasn't really necessary) then unscrewed the rear lens element and... a piece of glass was loose inside. I just screwed that in the place in the rear element group and that was it:)
As the lens was partially disassembled, and the aperture blades were right there in front of me, I adventured a little further and tried to clean them a bit. That was the most time consuming part (I didn't disassembled them) It took a lot of rubbing with cotton swabs and alcohol till the grease came all off, at least on one side.
All in all I am so glad I tried it and it worked out fine I was lucky (could have been a disaster)
I was anxious to get out and try it:

I still have problem focusing past infinity mark but no big deal I can live with that.

Infortunately there is no guarantee on this lens, it's an ebay buy...
It's a pity because the lens looks very good on the outside, the glass is perfect, the focus is smooth (but not as good as Takumars).
When I shake it something makes "click" inside but I think its got to do with the aperture blades.
The strange thing to me is that at close range the lens is great, the problem it's got to do with the focus near the infinite mark. One thing with this lens, is that the focus ring has a lot of precision at close distances but at far away objects is very difficult to achieve focus.
I'm no expert in lens but probably I will try to disassemble and look around. I have to look for instructions on the web.

I just got a Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon Electric 35mm f2,4. Based on internet reviews and pictures it looked a great lens but after some hours playing and testing it, I found out my copy has a problem.
At close focus it is sharp and really great lens, even wide open, but in medium / long distance subjects and landscape photos in general, weird things happen. Most of the times the lens is sharp only in a small portion of the center... what is this about? Can someone provide me any help?
Another problem is that it focus past infinity. I use a m42 adapter (not original but proved good with other m42 lenses I have).
Here are some examples. Please see photos 1 and 2 taken seconds apart to compare. There are no PP in the photos only resizing.
They where all taken at f8.

Thanks for any sugestions or help on this.

Here it is after the grindind. It works now. The task wasn't so difficult after all.
There is some oil in the blades in my copy too but they still work fine. The problem now is the focus ring is so hard, but I'm afraid I don't have the skills to fix that.

I have to test the lens to see if it is really whorth it.

Vivitar 28mm K mount problem

Hi,
I would like some help from you folks with Vivitar k mount lenses.
Just got this 28mm f2 k mount, but it doesn't mount in my K20D. The problem is this piece in the back around the lens that is to big. I compared with other Vivitar 28mm I got, the Close Focus f2.8 (which is very good). See the pictures for the comparison.
I think it is possible to grind/cut the piece so the lens can mount. The questions are: is this f2 lens good enough to be worth the trouble to made the modification? Is that piece of metal really necessary, what is it there for?
(Sorry the bad grammar)
Thanks for any help and advice.

M50mm F1.4 - strange color

Yes, that makes sense.
I always use the auto WB and never had such a weird color balance. This happened in 3 or 4 photos.
As this was the first time I was using this lens my first thought was that it had some defect in the coating... I'm glad it is not.
This lens is very nice, but not the upgrade I thought it would be from the 1.7, of course unless you want to use f1.4. One thing that would be good is if there was a stop between 1.4 and 2.
Thank's for your comments.

M50mm F1.4 - strange color

Hi
I got recently an SMC-M 50mm f1.4, and start using it last weekend with my K20D. The lens looks and feels in great shape, but some photos come out with a wierd color cast.
I was using as a lens hood, and aperture was around f4 - f 5.6. The sun was about 90 to left of the lens. Does any one experienced this before?
The first picture shows the problem , the second picture was taken instants later and it looks normal.

Of course this lens is not the ideal for bright light swimming pool shots, but I thought it would be a better performer, now I understand why the f1.7 version is so praised, I know I love my A50 1.7:)
Thank's for any feedback.

Thank's for the info.
If it doesn't make any harm I think I'll leave the pin. I can use the AM switch.
I'm considering buying a cheaper adapter because it is the only m42 lens I have and it only costed about 15 euro and it came with a Zenit EM attached:)
The original Pentax adapter would be two or three times the price I payed for the lens. Maybe I'll try and make the adaptation notch on the lens to lock it and keep the adapter in it all times. I seems that if I take the spring of the apadter it wont get stuck on the camera right.

Hi,
sorry for the (probably) dumb question.
I just got an Helios 58mm 44M, it is in very good condition. Of course now I'm searching the web for a good m42 adapter. I know that it is better to get an original Pentax adapter.
My question is if I have to remove or glue the pin in the lens to use with the K20D. My lens have the A/M switch, I just dont' want to make any mistakes and I don't know if theres any danger of the pin touching something inside the camera.
Thank you for any advice on how to use this lens:)

You don't have to spend 300 in a 50mm lens. I consider the 45 euro I payed for an M50 1.7 (shipping included) money very well spent. The difference in IQ is huge. Of course using manual lenses it's not the easiest or fastest way to take pictures, but it is worth the effort.

yet another focus screen question

I got the jinfinance diagonal split focusing screen a few months ago and I liked it.
It fits fine in the camera and makes easyer to focus. But a decided to replace it with the original K20D screen again because it is a brighter screen. It is a compromise you have to make. I can focus manualy even in low light with some precision and at this moment I prefer to have a brighter viewfinder (but I do take more time to focus). Conclusion: for the price I payed I consider the jinfinance good. If you want the best and brighter screen I suppose you have to pay a lot more ;)

Which Flash?

Before Christmas I was reasearching for a good flash for my K20D and also considered some "cheaper" units like the Sigma 530 ST, or the Cullmann 4500 (I think it is Vivitar brand in US). In the end I made my mind and bought the Metz 48, I dind't regret it. I started workin with it right away and getting good results (and I had never used an external flash before, in fact I never liked flash photography till then). I use it in TTL and from my short experience I get above 90% good exposures, direct flash or bounced to the ceilling. It costed 226 euro but I definitely recommended:)
