that's entirely the point ;) background compression plays a major part in how the final image looks.

while I do actually have a degree in mathematics I'm not really sure as at this point way too sleepy :) plus university was a long time ago...

what I can say is that a simpler (narrower) background due to a perspective change makes a heck of a difference.

this thread has got me really interested though to do some actual tests since these days I have a decent set of lenses to test the theory with and models+locations.

edit: plus I was always bad at number theory so I'd better just take some photos ;)

true, but I only ever shoot in manual. just because of how/where I shoot. so that 3rd wheel is awesome ;)

edit: could also just because I'm oldschool (a nice way of saying I'm old lol) and like having the front and rear dials assigned to aperture and shutter speed. either way having an ISO dial too is just fantastic...

circles of confusion are only part of the answer... shoot a 50mm at f1.4 and a 200mm at f2.8 with the same subject size and compare the backgrounds. not sure I've tested those two exact examples but you see the point...

i couldn't care less about marketing or market share. i just care about the ease of doing shoots that my client's have paid me for and delivering quality photos.

guess I never got that memo but if you say so... just had a google and indeed the NX1 does look quite cool. right now, for me personally, I'd rather shoot the k1 for photos and either some sony or panasonic gh4 for video, since I need to start shooting video too. but that's just me. everyone is different.

the world would be boring if everyone was the same ;)

nope nobody has been rude. just people sometimes can't quite accept that pentax isn't perfect :) or when people online (no names being mentioned tony) don't 100% sing praises of the brand.

I do kind of get why to some extent... sometimes people I shoot with haven't even heard of pentax.

the main thing that matters to me (well almost) is that in the time I've been doing paid shoots in the last year and a half or so I haven't had a single complaint and I keep getting asked back for almost more work than I can handle recently.

I remember at the start of the summer I was shooting an event with my k50 and the sigma 17-50 with another chap who had a canon 5dmk3 and he was just jealous of how light my setup was ;)

anyway OT... it's a great forum, I've just been hesitant to start posting.

Is Sigma 85 f/1.4 EX DG OK on K-1

in the shop (store - for you american chaps) it seemed great. mostly been trying it on my k3 last night though. i'll leave this tab open and test more on my k1 tomorrow as i should have a free-ish day. front focussed a lot on my k3 but now from my (limited) tests seems a lot sharper than my FA*85.

not to say anything against the FA*85 mind you, before anyone chimes in. shots of one model a week ago or so outside were almost all taken with the FA*85 on the K1 at f1.4 and they're fantastic. it just didn't quite behave quite so well all day.

ah... yep. this is the chap "A shorter focal length will have a wider field of view, and therefore it is likely that there will be more objects in the background at a closer distance."

if you have a zoom lens with a fixed maximum aperture try shooting with the subject the same size in your viewfinder from different distances away at the same aperture and it makes sense :)

for example the background looks so much more blurred out shooting at 200mm verses 70mm both at f2.8. it's not really... there's just less to stretch to the background width. so it is ;)

so... which also seems to cause a lot of confusion. from the same distance on my cropped sensor k3 at f2.8 i can shoot a model at 135mm and at about 200mm on my full frame k1. so the k1 photo has a better blurred out background. even tho f2.8 is f2.8 no matter what the sensor size is. (not getting into ISO performance since that's another one, since the full frame sensor just collects more light (T-stops)).

hi chaps :) figured I'd reply to both posts at the same time :) esp as it's 7am here now and it's been a long night... :p

i'm not new to forums... currently maintaining 8 servers and I don't know how many websites. been a member of quite a few forums before (including one running my own forum software).

I guess my main issue has been this... a lot of the people here seem to be so "pro pentax" that anything against pentax seems to get flamed.

personally I shoot pentax because quite honestly I think it's the best (for photos) all things considered. is it perfect? of course not. sometimes other brands are better in certain areas. do I wish I shot something else? no way :) if I did I'd sell up and switch given how much I depend on my photoshoots right now.

I'd love to post some photos sometime, once I figure out which ones I actually own the copyrights to...

anyway, since I've started posting here I'm not going anywhere :D

lol fair enough, I'll get used to it anyway :)

#2 (greater the aperture) and #3 (closer to subject) are correct.

but... when you shoot with a longer lens (from further away with the same subject size) it "sees" a narrower background, so there's less to fill the width of the background so it blur's out more. usually referred to as "compressing the background" as it appears closer to the subject.

which is why I usually prefer to shoot from further way with my 70-200 at 2.8 than my 24-70 at 2.8.

also consider the distance to subject, verses subject to background.

I agree they try to cram a lot in for a lower price but that's how I bought into pentax in the first place.

So to disagree... they know exactly how it all fits together. they understand the ergonomics of how a camera should work. these days I could easily have bought a decent canon/nikon/sony system for the same money but I'm not going to switch.

caveat: except for video... might buy a sony body :p

Pentax K1 for Professional Use?

I've shot with pentax professionally for the last 18 months. I only shoot glamour/portrait. for studio work I never had issues with my k50. was waiting to see if the amount of work would justify more expensive bodies and lenses.

since getting that 3rd dial on my k1 I really miss it now on my k3 (which I picked up 2nd hand just before getting the k1). only ever set it to ISO or WIFI ;) but it's fantastic.

having shot with a canon 5dmk3 this last year... sometimes the AF is just amazingly quick but sometimes off. other times it's about the same as my k50. I'd rather stick with the pentax AF, plus for the shoots I do it's more than fine.

on a side note was chatting to a chap yesterday who used to work for "Top Gear" here in romania and now presents another car show and told me much he liked the photos I shot with a few models last week and the colour+skin tones. so much so that he asked me to shoot some models with a car they'll have next week, the day before they film their tv show...

so yep, pentax is better than great for professional work imho ;)

Pentax 77 | Wide-open | Soft?

just to add... my FA*55 is sharper than expected wide open at 1.4. my FA*85 isn't as sharp at 1.4 but doesn't need to be. has a great look for portraits, except for when it totally couldn't lock focus on my k1 recently a few times...

I'm never ironic I'm english... oh wait :)

just did another quick test though with the same settings and the FA*85 does look quite a bit warmer compared to the sigma 85. a quick check on the rgb histogram on my k3 shows more red and less blue on the pentax compared to the sigma.

I've used a lot of manual focus glass on my k10d. it's a great body even now if you can stick to iso 400 or under. the k20d has better iso performance from what I've read. either should be around 150quid.

focus peaking on my K50 was great when manually focussing and I've had no issues at all. the k30 is pretty much the same body.

here in romania I had to wait ages to get a K1. seemed like they'd never have it in stock so I ended up getting a 2nd hand K3 from olx to upgrade from my k50, then the next week the k1 was in stock :p can't say I mind now mind you... turns out it was the only one they had tho and haven't had any more since.

with battery grip and spare battery the k1 cost me (with current exchange rates) 2535 usd.

the k10d was my first introduction to pentax. i haven't shot with it in a while but it's still a great backup body and works great. i remember about a year ago somehow my K50 had been turned on in my bag and couldn't quickly find the spare batteries so did the entire shoot with the K10d with no issues at all ;)

actually lending the k50 to a friend to learn photography while keeping my k10d ;)

picked up a new sigma 85 today. so far very impressed with the sharpness and silent focus and very curious to compare to my FA* 85 which I've almost been too afraid to out in case I damage it (plus on the 10+ shoots I've used the FA* with the past 2 weeks or so the focus seemed to totally fail a few times forcing me back to my 70-200).

the FA* has a much warmer colour tone but the sigma seems more accurate from quick tests so far. having the sigma hood extension is pretty handy when used on a crop body.
