Finally got a scanner!

Haha, definitely not catching crabs in Frostburg. I just moved up here in August, was living in Salisbury, though these crabs were caught on the Patuxent river in Lusby.

I chose the v600 over the v500 because I found it for about the same price that I was seeing the v500 so I went with the upgraded model. I love the thing but I'm still learning the intricacies of getting really good scans out of it. I am really happy that without any real effort I can get good scans though, now to try and eek the best results I can out of it.

@P67, Haha, the crabs do not end up on that barbecue, they have their own little propane grill for steaming them. These are actually dry scans, I've been trying to rig up a way to try wet scanning on this scanner but so far haven't had a chance to try anything and as far as I can tell no one makes a wet scanning mount for it.

Right now I'm just using the provided POS film holders and they are working well enough, though handling negative curl is tricky at times. I'm going to a framing shop today to have them cut me some glass to try as a film holder.

Haha, it's ok, my fault for misunderstanding the implication of what you said. I have never shot with 320 as it just never seemed to appeal to me, but I have always heard the mantra that Tri-X in Rodinal was a no no, but I wanted to give it a try and I like the results, it's not the cleanest but it is one heck of a lot better than the results I got back from Dwayne's when I sent them a couple of rolls that I didn't have enough chemicals to do myself. I'm still trying to salvage a few of the shots from those rolls. Lesson learned though, I'm never sending B + W stuff out for processing again.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm using Tri-X 400, aka adding water to hot oil on the stove, you're just not supposed to do it, but for whatever reason I like it.

As for the results here what I was saying is that the sharpness at 100% for a 32 MP scan matched the sharpness of my 14 MP K20d at 100%, so I'm getting great results that allow a lot more flexibility that the files I get from my K20D, I'm not saying that the 6x7 is a match for the K20D I'm saying the files are a heck of a lot better and, well, I have so much more fun doing all of this myself.

I can finally post here! I got a scanner so that I can scan some of the giant backlog of film I have :) These are all shot on Velvia with my 6x7.

I finally got a scanner to get some of my 6x7 shots on my computer. I purchased an Epson v600 from amazon and I don't think I could be much happier with what I've gotten out of it so far :)

I would love to get a Nikon Coolscan 9000 but I don't have the money for it at the moment so I settled for a flatbed and I had read some good reviews of the v500 and the newer v600. I found a decent deal on it so I jumped, and I'm pretty pleased. I've found that I can scan at 2400 dpi and get results around 32 MP which when viewed at 100% are atleast as good looking as the files from my k20d viewed at 100% :D

Here are a few shots of Tri-X shot at 400 stand developed in Rodinal 1:100 for 1 hour.

Horrible IQ, is it my lens or camera?

I really think that your first test identified the problem. I think that your polarizer is defective. As for the different exposures I've always had different lenses that expose differently when using auto settings. Seeing as how your original problem was related to blurry soft images and not exposure I'd focus more on that than the fact that your kit lens underexposes compared to the DA* when using AV.

Just to throw out there. Pentax did redesign the 43mm ltd for Leica (I think?) for their rangefinders so they obviously can decrease the registration distance.

Question about Dwayne's Photo and B+W

Ok, got a question for you all out there. I got lazy about a month ago and didn't order new developer, so when I went on a shooting spree and shot about 7 rolls of 120 Black and White I had no way to develop it. I've sent some E-6 film off to Dwayne's and have been pleased with the results so I figured I would continue the laziness and send the B+W stuff to them also.

Well I got it all back and lets say I'm completely underwhelmed. Every print is completely washed out with very little contrast. Plain and simple they look awful. Looking over the negatives I'm having trouble telling if I screwed up or if they just did a plain bad job. I also got some Velvia and Provia back in the same order and those all look great, as well as some Portra 160nc and Fuji 160s that look just fine also.

Based on these observations I'm thinking they did a relatively poor job on the BW but I'm not going to put off the possibility that I just dropped the ball while shooting, there are a few prints in the batch that turned out pretty good, not great, but pretty good.

My question is, has anyone else had a similar experience from Dwayne's and B+W?

I think with photography we sometimes get into an "Emperor's New Clothes" kind of situation. Outside of the super successful professional crowd many amateurs get told by friends and acquaintances that their photographs are "amazing" when really they're nice but nothing truly special (and I think some of the pros get this too). I know I get that from friends on a regular basis but I look at my own work and see a start, but lots and lots of room to grow.

Sounds like this photographer with the D700 is parading around nude and nobody wants to tell him.

DA 35mm Limited $399 obo w/ free US/CAN shipping

I got my 77 ltd from prodigital for $550 US and had no major complaints. It shipped quickly and I had it in a reasonable amount of time. The packaging was also great with plenty of cushioning where the box didn't move around at all.

My one complaint about them is they tried to open a non-payment complaint about a week after I received the lens. It was quickly resolved as I had proof from paypal that they did indeed receive my payment.

That's an awesome video.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed by the cap on the interval shooting as well. I had wanted to a 2 week timelapse of some construction near my house but the 99 limit seemed to present too much of a handicap and I didn't want to buy extra equipment at the time.

Of course there are lots of gross things out there that people eat, but for whatever reason, reproductive organs, eyeballs, and other viscera are on my do not want to ever try list.

Ok. . . . . . . . I don't think I'll ever be able to look at my camera the same way again after this comparison. . . . . . .

Haha, I may be missing out, but since I already know what Mountain oysters are, I don't plan on ever trying them

Outdoor Black and White Portraiture Suggestions

Hey Guys,

Coming up on the July 4th I'm going to be doing a portrait shoot outdoors with black and white film in 35mm and 6x7. I'm looking for some suggestions as to getting the results I'm looking for. I'm trying to get mid to high contrast, so nice bright whites and pretty dark blacks, but nothing too extreme. I'm most concerned with highlight separation because there is going to be plenty of light clothing and I don't want to lose details in the outfits. Since it's going to be portraiture I want the skin tones to be as pleasing as possible as well.

It's going to be a mix of distance shooting and close ups with some group shots as well as individual stuff. I was planning on using 400 tri-x and was wondering if you could recommend and tips for exposure and developing to get good results along the lines of what I'm aiming for. I'm also open to any advice or tips you can offer for other films to use.

Haha, I know that long paragraph probably doesn't offer much help, I'm still trying to formulate what I'm going for in my head but this is what I've got so far. If you all can give me some advice that would be great. This is my first semi-formal shoot like this and I'm excited but still looking for as much guidance as I can find before hand.

Oh yeah, and the camera's will be my KX with the M 50mm f1.4 and M 135mm f3.5 as well as my 6x7 with the 55mm f4 and the 90mm f2.8. I'll also have my K20d there but I'm more concerned with the film stuff.

Thanks guys!

- Morgan

My first Photoshopped fashion shot

I really like the look of the shot. The color of the jacket and the style really look nice. As far as critique I don't mind the background, what I really find distracting is the brightness of the model's skin, especially on her face. I also agree that the bag isn't very well emphasized in the shot, it kind of disappears into the shadows down in the corner there. I also don't think that the bright prada lettering helps that at all, makes the bag appear even darker. If it were possible to compress the contrast of the image a little bit, bringing down the models face and bringing up the bag a bit, I think that would improve the image overall.

Hey Mike, I've been meaning to grab my 6x7 ever since I saw your post and I'm sorry that I keep forgetting. I have the 90mm f2.8 and the 55mm f4. Give me about 20 minutes and I'll have those measurements for you. This is the problem with working 12 hour shifts, haha I forget the things that I decide to do early in the shift by the time I get home.

-Morgan

Edit: Ok, here are my rough measurements (sorry, didn't have a great ruler and the elements are slightly recessed so I had to eyeball it a little bit):

90mm f2.8 (67 version) - 42mm
55mm f4 (67 version) - 21mm

K20D Shutter whine/noise

Haha, wow. I've been noticing the same noise for almost as long as I've had my K20D and it has always bothered me a little bit. Everything has always worked just fine so I ignored it.

Realized I had the same issue. I almost always keep mine in the low or hi speed drive mode, switched it to single shot and sure enough, away goes the odd noise. Funny how simple solutions tend to work like that :D

Wow. . . . . .

That's all I can say. With my K20D and Lightroom 2 I have never succeeded in pulling something back like that. . . . . . I apparently need more practice in using Lightroom or I definitely need to use the D-Range setting.

Well, I was recently looking at portrait lenses and I find the new Vivitar series 1 85mm f1.4 to be pretty intriguing. It's not too expensive, about $350 or so and it has a few fans here on the forum. It also comes branded as a Samyang or Polar 85mm f1.4 but they are all the same lens. I would check those out for portrait lenses.
