Nobody supporting KP's RAW files yet?

If the K-70 files are supported, those from the KP should be similar as the KP has the same sensor/NR hardware.

Are you able to open DNGs? Those should be universally supported regardless of camera model.

Best place for lens repair?

Eric can service the FA 77mm. It's a fairly simple repair. However, his backlog is pretty big right now, so I would recommend sending it to precision. It'll cost you more but should be much faster. Thankfully, feedback on Precision's service has been improving in recent months.

Front focus and back focus problems with manual focus lenses

Do you get the same problem in live view with focus peaking/magnification? If not, then it's probably just tolerance that's not discernible via the viewfinder. If so, then the image quality of the lens itself is to blame.

Beware the new lens

These big weather sealed lenses can indeed cause a lot of air flow inside the camera, especially when new. That's probably why the dust got sucked in.

I'd say Lightroom would be the go-to solution if you're looking for something all-in-one.

You can of course use the software the camera came with (download it online & use this trick to install, but use S-SW140 instead), though it's not streamlined for workflow. The main advantage is that it can mirror any in-camera settings, so it's particularly good for editing files taken with pixel shift.

Pentax option mx4 SD card support

That is one old camera! The manual says it only supports standard SD cards, i.e. those <= 4Gb. Some 4Gb cards are SDHC, not SD, so if you want to be 100% sure it will work, get a 2Gb card:

If you're still getting the error, try formatting the card in-camera or on a PC using the FAT32 or FAT16 (more likely) file system.

Your guess is as good as mine, but I would say "soon".

The Theta V just came out, next in line we'll probably see a high-end APS-C body, followed by a new 645 body, with maybe a new product line in between? As much as they keep resisting mirrorless, it's only a matter of time before they'll have to re-enter the market with something a bit more broadly appealing than the Q.

a new Pentax 645z

Charge the battery and make sure you always keep a charged battery in the camera. Late 2013 is probably the default date, since the 645Z came out before that.

Feel free to update the firmware if you want the latest features, too.

This is a damaged lens, right?

Turning the focusing ring with the AF shaft engaged (i.e. AF mode on the AF/MF switch) can in fact damage both the camera and the lens if the lens doesn't have quick shift (this one doesn't, the DA 50mm F1.8 doesn't, all other current DA lenses do).

I would test the lens in autofocus mode, and in manual focus mode, doing what you just did. If it's smooth, then it's fine. If there are bumps or clicks, then it's defective.

DA 18-270mm at record low price

The full price history is available here, below the specs table:
SMC Pentax-DA 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 ED SDM Reviews - DA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Looks like the price was $424 when I posted this, it has since gone up by around $30.

If you're looking for more reach, I'd go for the new Sigma 18-300mm, which is actually a little bit cheaper. The only tradeoff is the lack of in-camera corrections.

Not sure about the 645Z specifically, but there has been an increase in positive feedback in recent months, including K-1 users. Seems like they are definitely working on improving behind the scenes.

Lightroom "Classic"

Haha yeah. That's the equivalent of almost 16 years of CC access for the cost of one K-1.

Plus, if you factor in the promotional rate of $99/year which is regularly available during holiday periods, and which can be pre-paid to lock in the price, you're looking at 19 years of service for the cost of one pro body.

Question on repairs to DA 17-70 SDM motors and 16-85 reliability
Posted By Adam

Even if you get a good repair job, the 16-85mm (or any other DC lens) will be more reliable, as it's a completely different technology that's not prone to the same kind of failure.

It doesn't have the same failure rate, it seems, but it might still be worth investing in a 3-5 year third party warranty if you want to be sure your investment is protected.

As for the image quality, the gap between the K-70 and the K-50 will feel bigger than the gap between the K-50 and the K-r. It may just blow you away :)
