The cover holes are over a microphone port, not just aesthetic choice.

I seem to recall the flash implementation on PZ-1p working really well for fill flash, letting me darken ambient with filled subject very easily. I admit I haven't been able to achieve that effect so well since. I do know that PZ-1p did allow flash sync at 1/250, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Correct. It's an image stored in the camera, as is a start-up screen.

Shoot full size if you like, and even RAW only. Develop to JPEG in-camera and resize has always been possible.

It matters not. I just hope they vet the name against American word associations, which can be truly stupid.

Product Stories of New APS-C

I'm betting it will be higher priced, and I don't mind. Other makers charge >$3K for what they choose to offer, which is mostly, as if they all were lemmings, high burst rate and 4K video. What Pentax puts in its rugged, high-quality cameras is what I vastly prefer. Don't forget that the sensor's processing is being upgraded also. One reviewer already compared the EXACT SAME 36mpx sensor used in K-1 against its use in a Nikon and a Sony. Pentax Prime IV processing performed better.

Market forces create the need for industrial/commercial secrecy, and not just with Pentax but with others also. I'm sure they will create a website for the new camera.

AF/MF Focusing in Pentax system

I also do a quick click of the AF/MF switch to go to MF quickly -- which is not very often. Sometimes I am tripod-shooting the same subject multiple times with other adjustments, while not using back button focus, and in those cases I'll take the first AF and then turn the switch to MF and complete the shoot.

That's an accurate summary of the information. I'm glad you linked it over at DPR, whose brief notice of the video is cursory, at best.

K-01 with its custom soft case

Thanks Officious and David. Only 300 of the cases were made, and thank goodness I paid half price for it new. This is the only time I've had it out of the original box. I'm glad I have the full K-01 set, although the strap was not good. The anti-slip flocking was not very good and it flaked off in black bits that could contaminate a camera bag and get into lenses.

Taken with K-S2 & the SMC-A 50mm f1.4. The camera strap came with the K-3 silver Premium Edition. Strap goes through a slot at the end of the case, and the camera slips out, with the case always remaining attached to the strap.

Sticky: Manual: Solenoid replacement: Pentax K-S1

Thank you for a Great presentation. For interest, I fixed my K-S2 by filing the plunger in the green solenoid. I did not replace it with the white solenoid. I have shot thousands of pictures since with no problems whatsoever. Maybe one day it will fail again, but so far so good. I believe I know the trick to filing the plunger successfully.

On another note, on my camera the black wire that connects to the lens mount ring directly above the solenoid either was not connected when I open the camera, or I accidentally pulled it loose during disassembly. I did not notice pulling it loose, so I suspect it had come undone at some earlier time, through a weak connection from the factory. In any case, I did not have a precision soldering tool, so I was unable to reconnect the black wire. The wire is extremely short, with no slack, and with no room at the end to strip and make a good solder anyway. Even with a precision soldering tool, I don't think I could've reconnected that wire. Nevertheless, I have noticed no ill effects at all from leaving that wire unconnected. Thousands of pictures later, perhaps more clicks then I had taken before the solenoid failed initially, my K-S2 is operating fine.

Agreed. My K-3 is still running fine. I have found the dynamic range with which to raise shadows excellent. I under-exposed here to avoid blowing out the whites, knowing that I could bring the dark areas up a great deal. The woods were lovely, dark and deep.

I repaired mine myself several thousand frames ago, using the aperture block "filing" method. I think one simply needs to know how to file the part correctly. I will certainly report if mine ever fails again.

55-300 RE - Be Careful with Hood

BigMackCam - My NORMAL approach was to put the hood on retracted, but it definitely became less smooth as time passed, and in this case I was in a hurry to get a CPL on the lens. I actually had first noticed the wear issue with my Q7 06 lens hood, which was a difficult on off from the very beginning.

The amazing thing is that after jumping it off track, I overcame it in the opposite direction with no permanent damage.

Dust inside WR lens

My 55-300 WR RE has lots of dust behind front element. Still, the barrels seem to fit very snugly within each other so the seals seem tight. Looking closely around the front element, the edges look open to the inside, to me. It's possible that I can't see the seal. Even with the dust, that lens is optically VERY much better than it's price indicates. It's a sharp piece of kit.

Yes, I wanted to put on a CPL quickly. But now I will do it ONLY extended, gripping the extended barrel firmly. I don't want to apply torque into the lens body at all.
