I always found that the O-ME53 gave a useful bit of extra nose relief which I will continue to use on K-New if compatible, looks to be though. Still unknown if the LCD is touch or not though.

If they shifted from Milbeaut then that is a fundamental rewrite of their entire code base for SLR. Would account for the extended time frame for the K-New (Covid notwithstanding) as it would be a big job. Possible for sure.

I wonder if everyone is looking through a set of lens that they want to see. Let's make a few assumptions:

- Pentax have historically shared their 'Flagship architecture' across formats - I see no reason for this to change, economies of scale, ease of support, why redesign a wheel if you have a working model.
- I believe the sensors used in the K-3 series, K-1 series and the 645Z series came from the same family of Sony designs, scaled up and down.

So the same base architecture was used for K-3 gave 8.2 fps, on the K-1 this became 3.7-9, on the 645Z lower again.

Step forward to 2019, go to Sony, what do you have on the shelf? We have x family of sensors. What formats do they support? OK, right, let's see what Milbeaut have that is equivalent. We have z family, it does this and this and is backward compatible mostly with the stuff you bought from us before but we've upgraded some of the interfaces, it runs faster and cooler, yadda, yadda.

So the engineers sit down and list out the needs, wants, nice to haves, match off with sensor and controller and that's the baseline. Except it is not just for the K-New, it will also cover the different formats. So what has changed or markedly improved over the last 9 years? Process tech is one, quick bit of Googling suggests that Milbeaut stuff is available in anything from 90nm down to 7nm (dunno if this is with Samsung or TSMC or both and probably 2 generations too new for Pentax :), 9 years ago 28nm would have been bleeding edge outside of mobile or cpu), memory would have gone from DDR2/3 to DDR4, external I/O (usb) is still fragmented but there have been useful improvements there too, lastly storage is where arguably the greatest improvements have been made on the throughput per dollar. Add all those up and you're looking at an architecture that will be 4K 60fps native at the minimum, probably in or around 15fps at 24MP, 7+ on 36MP with write speeds to cards at 150MB/s.

So is the K-New an action camera? Can be or it might be tuned to the mechanical shutter. Will there be an all round improvement through the whole processing stack, highly probable. Will AF be improved to D500 level? :), nah, but it will be an improvement. Is the K-New important? Very.

Nope, Hazel's been as good as gold since lockdown introduced. Jen reckons Max, she thinks I'm allergic to him. Popped into the doctor today and he reckoned some 'allergic conjunctivitis' but also a sty or what looks to be a sty in my main camera eye (my left). So cream and antibiotic for a week, if it doesn't clear up then an eye specialist - he did go into great detail about how flexible an eyelid is to a specialist :p for a better look. Pain in the eye huh. So apologies all for dropping out. Annoyed with myself. Now to see if I can use sympathy vote to free my 85 :)

I'm out, have a lovely bout of conjunctivitis. Scratchy eyeball and all that. Antibiotics and cream. Hardly been near the PC, or cameras for that matter for a few days now. Will finish up next month, it's not the lens fault.

The articulating screen or lack of (we don't know for sure) is a funny one. I've begun using the K-1's screen more, and have been finding it a boon in certain scenarios, say tripod at waist level or when I want to Pixelshift something. I would miss it on the K-1. On my K-3 it is fixed but its a faster animal in use, and knees and elbows have been used frequently to get a shot. If its fixed it really had better be a touch and a minimum of HD resolution, my last 2 smartphones have been QHD+ I think (Note 8 and Note 10+) so its not like its impossible or a pipe dream.
I can understand the resistance if you're a K-5 or K-3 user and have not experienced the K-1 implementation but it is actually really good and overall I would find it a backward step not to have it especially as a flagship but and it's a big but, we still don't know what that OVF brings to the table :)

A better tether integration with a smartphone would be nice. I doubt very much that they'll drop GPS, Astrotracer and WiFi off a new flagship. I'm interested in what else will appear on the secondary control dial, I can make out the camera function but the other 2 are indistinct to me. The symbol on the Pentaprism housing behind the secondary control dial is the same that signified GPS in the K-1 I think?
All we know for sure is that it has SR, a better OVF, more tactile buttons, a thumbstick, 8 way buttons where sometimes 4 and there seems to be a sensor to blank out the screen. Add in the usual (for flagship) like dual cards, dual IR, AF light, no pop up flash and a dedicated grip. Coming together nicely as a purposeful Pentax APS-C camera. Looks like a worthy successor to the K-3 series.

But they were talking about everything except specs. It was the grip, the tactility of switches, the viewfinder, the feedback and sound of the mirror - concepts completely alien to those who have never picked up a recent high end Pentax. Not how many fps, not now many af points, not can I do 4k video. Different universe altogether - we know it will do fantastic stills, no doubting that, we know it will hold onto iq as you go up through the ISO range, we can guess that it will feel amazing in hand and through the ovf purely by the reverence that the interviewer was showing the prototype. All good so far.

I'm out for a few days unfortunately. Work has just gone mental and I've landed a beauty of a project , to go with my other projects. Nice to be in demand I suppose. I had scheduled myself to be off for 6 extra days so far this month but have been pulled in to do some firefighting one day, a bit of direction on another and the hours add up. I'll probably just continue on with the 70-200 into August too. Nothing else getting a look in :p

The whole imaging processing engine has been redesigned :) The DFA*'s in Silver look kinda funky. Perhaps a way of determining which lens are Pentax only in the future :P (right, that was a joke, tongue in cheek before someone kicks off) I am amazed he didn't put the K-1 & 21 Limited to his eye when it was handed to him :)

Anyone who doesn't care about or understand what the videos are for or think that they are not good enough - go stand in the corner :D - Pentax has given us insight into their engineering team, that rarely happens.

Every hobby costs money and a good part of that is supporting systems - be it compute, storage, paper, ink, online storage. I don't understand the rationale for decreasing quality - if I create an image on my K-1 and whatever lens I have mounted, I want everything, every single colour bit, every tone graduation. I don't care that right here and now I can't easily display it in its full glory on paper, or that if I share it with family and friends they can't make out the tiny minutiae, that technology will reach the masses eventually.
I probably have a different use case from you but I see photography as capturing a moment, it is also an archival format and I want to save and protect as much detail as I can now so when my memory starts to blur or I pass my saved moments to the next generation they have the maximum amount of detail.
You can argue that I can save 50% storage and only lose 10% fidelity, I'd argue that that is 10% you'll never be able to recover and its short sighted saving. That 10% can be the difference in someone's eyes reflecting warmth and happiness or a pair of eyes.
I could go into numbers and figures about relative cost of compute & storage but it's a waste of time. I will say my first PC that I built myself in 91 cost me 2000 pounds which I saved myself working in a factory over a summer, back breaking work. 4MB of memory cost 200 pounds. A 2GB hard drive cost 400 pounds, a CD Rom drive cost 400 pounds. I see you're based in the states, you have the luxury of some of the most competitive pricing for any consumer facing product world wide. I'm based in the EU, if I say its cheap, it's is for sure cheaper for you.
S!

So from Feb 2017 to 25th 2020, I put a grand total of 4000 shots on my K-1, from the 1st June to today I've added over 1000 , my poor K-1 doesn't know what's happening to it. This last week has been a shambles, work and weather getting in the way of things. I'm still a few days behind catching up on my missed days of comments but it's work in progress. I'm becoming less precious about carrying the baby bazooka about and I've noticed it does chew battery life far more than my other lenses but it could also be symptomatic of me pressing the af button more alongside the shutter.

I spoil myself :), My work lab has EPYC or Threadrippers, Home has a Ryzen 9 with RAID0'd Samsung Evo +'s :D - I bet you'd notice a difference if you dropped a 3600 in lieu of the 1600 though.

Getting back on topic, I've always been a firm believer in speeding up the slowest part of your system for a snappier overall feel, hence NVMe. 36Mp files are in the region of what 50MB in size? so 60 or 80 should be maxing out at 150MB - The biggest problem here is Adobe and not getting on the case with usable GPU offloading or breaking out the threads properly in their codebase. Adobe are one of if not the biggest culprits in not making their software (in this case Photoshop or Lightroom) more multi-threaded and having their code overly Intel optimized.

This was fine pre Ryzen but the goal posts have now changed. Quad core is now bare minimum, Hexa to Octa mainstream and Deca+ will be the norm within 18 months (for non tech heads, apologies - talking core counts Quad = 4, Hexa = 6, Octa = 8 and Deca+ = 10+ cores. Really quick summary of the last 10 years in processors - Intel was / is the 800lb Gorilla, kept mainstream at quad cores - 8+ was HEDT or High End Desktop with a price to match. AMD released their Zen platform 3-4 years ago which has taken 4 cores to up to 16 in the mainstream category, in the High End Desktop, you can get a 64 core monster now and Intel got caught with the hands in the cookie jar :))

That's what AMD Ryzen's or Threadrippers are for :) Throw 4 or 8 x 16GB sticks in and let 12+ cores munch through the data. NVMe is the game changer in compute space, freeing us up from the Sata6 limitation of 550MB/s to 3000+MB/s with consumer rated TLC drives. Then it's a case of speeding up the import from your cards so a Type C Sdcard reader will help there. Just need Adobe to pull their fingers out with better muktithreaded capabilities with Photoshop & Lightroom. So 60mp files should be no problem :D

They've designed these for a generation so 60-80 mp range makes sense for FF over the next 5 to 10 years. A lens generation is what 10 - 15 years?

I'm beginning to think that their head of marketing is a bit of a genius. First off he brings in a virtual round table discussion with the engineers about the new DA* wide zoom and the 21 Limited, while giving a peak to the K-New. Then he has the President of Ricoh Imaging talk about the brand values. If you notice too, the video production is getting sharper, almost as if he is getting traction within the company and more budget is released. Vid 1 probably cost €5K including staff salary. Vid 2 probably around €15K. For the amount of publicity they are getting, and as a channel of communication with their customer base, value for money factor is completely off the scale. Kudos to him and his team.

DPR is going apeshit, 600+ comments on the announcement, feels like 60/40 in favour and PetaPixel has just come out with a piece agreeing with their stance. You can almost feel the steam coming out of the ML brigade collective ears :) Noooo the future is mirrorless and all the while people are coming on board and saying, yeah, kinda agree with that even though I'm using such and such. Go for it Pentax is the overall sentiment across all photography fans.

What Ricoh / Pentax have just done is draw a line in the sand that says - Hello, we're about the art of photography, we design our cameras, our lenses around a more purist form of photography. That is what we want as photographers, what the majority of our loyal customers want and it is what we are going to continue to do. We do Crop and FF and MF, if you want to really experience a pure form of photography try a couple of Limiteds - we actually suggest 3, if you want best of best try the DFA*s. Have fun! And Hai, if you really are into it, take a 645Z for a spin :D

We all should stop talking about the other brands. We are on a separate fork. Photography is the ship torpedoed by the mobile and video submarine. With this video our heads have broken through the surface of the sea on the life buoy that is Pentax. We can see the other survivors getting on overcrowded life rafts and fighting amongst themselves for space and survival.

I've said it a few times, Pentax is and has always been about the essence and art of the process of photography which they back up with functionally designed cameras that ergonomically are at or near enough top of class. They are well balanced and have a hewn from solid feel. Add in HyperProgram, 2 dials or 3 on the K-1 and everything you need is at your fingertip to properly expose that moment in time. They design lenses that fit into this capturing the moment brief, see the FA Limited's or the DA Limited's. This does not mean they forego zooms or macro's but the Limited's have been a singular sign post into the brands vision of what they see photography is about for over 20 years. It's a romantic notion of sorts far far away from the 10+ fps spray and pray, newt eyeball focusing optic focused compute nodes that seem to be in fashion for some at the moment.

Lastly don't forget the Star series of optics, Pentax is still a formidable optics house and the Star's can go toe to toe with any without fear of disgrace. I'm halfway through a Singles in Month with the HD PENTAX-D FA*70-200/2.8 and it is fast becoming one of if not the favourite lens in my bag. It has a certain arrogance about it, fabulous colour rendering, resolution to spare and wonderful oof transitions, but in the back of my mind is that nagging feeling that it can and will do more if I was more capable. The 43 Limited is like that and the K-1 too.

For stills photography, capturing a moment, the equipment is not problem, it's the photographers ambition, their imagination, their framing, their mastery of their art that ultimately sets the bar for image quality. I am lucky, I can improve and I know that my K-1 and my lenses will release more of their capabilities as I do. Its a good place to be :)

I was kinda hoping that the president would take his jacket off, take one of the cameras down from the shelf and open a cupboard with his favourite lenses. He'd then tell the interviewing photographer to shut up and spend the next hour waxing lyrical about why he prefers the K50 over the M50, why his all time favourite lens is a SMC K35/3.5 on a K-1 in square crop mode and monochrome only. He also takes the K-P out street shooting with a 21 every lunch hour. After that, he will beg forgiveness for the mistakes his predecessors during the Hoya regime made in lowering the value of the Pentax brand. "Next week I'll get the engineers in and they will show you the circuit board of my K-1 Street Edition :) quadruple the bandwidth, takes the 500MB/s sd cards and I have a special user mode called HC. AF is disabled, monochrome only, lcd screen disabled, special dial only offers up ISO, & exposure bracketing".
