People seem to be forgetting inflation of pricing in the camera market. Prices of five years ago do not apply to the current camera market. Prices are rising for all camera makers.

Meet the new flagship

Well I shot some wedding portraits and it was noticeable the K5 was far inferior to the K3. In a controlled situation the K5 was fine (except for tungsten light conditions) but under pressure I much preferred the K3. One reason i dumped the K5.

Now the KP is better again although not as big a jump as from K5>>K3. The problem being the small buffer of the KP can be just as big a bottleneck as the AF itself.

Still I expect the K New to be a welcome step up. Improved speed and tracking would be nice but for me wider coverage of AF area would be just as important an upgrade as AF pure speed.

Also, accurate AF of wide aperture lenses on outside AF points would be really handy.

Agree, never liked X-trans. Fake colours and super high contrast with loss of detail. The waxy skin issue was real as well, at least on the X-E1. The Fujifilm camera's generally look great though.

New Flash Recommendation

If you think you will get into off camera flash or multiple light setups or think you might want to scale up later then consider Godox.

GODOX TT350P (small flash but also can act as a trigger)
Godox V1-P (larger lithium ion-powered flash)

They also have larger lights such as Godox AD200 and others.

A comparison between DFA 85, FA 85 and A 85

It is clearly a step up from the Sigma HSM 85mm F1.4 in Pentax mount. I have a copy of this lens. It has CA and inconsistent AF. I can't justify the price of the new DFA 85mm but if I had the cash I would be sorely tempted.

Don't know how it compares to the Art version though.

Pentax K200D, Yongnuo YN585EX-PTTL Wireless Speedlight Flash ----remote trigger????

Probably two Cactus V6 II's. One as trigger on the camera, one as receiver (that you put your Yongnuo YN585EX on).

Hopefully Class A can chime in as he is a Cactus expert.

You could re-purpose your Pentax flashes and use them as slave flashes but it is an expensive way to use them.

DFA 85mm f/1.4 Now on Ricoh's Website

I agree with you.

I was just trying to put things in context for some people who seem to think the price is extreme.

If the MTF charts are accurate and the AF on the K1 or K3 III (when it comes out) is good, I personally think it's a fair price. Not cheap but fair. Quality counts plus its a full frame lens as well NOT Aps-c or M43's.

DFA 85mm f/1.4 Now on Ricoh's Website

People should be aware that camera and lens prices have escalated across all manufacturers. Not only Ricoh.

Look at the price of the Olympus E-M5 III. This is m43 and costs US$1,199 or over $1,500 Australian dollars.

The Fujifilm XF 50-140mm F2.8 is US$1,299 on sale or $1,700+ Australian dollars for an APS-C only lens.

You cannot compare prices from a few years back as those prices generally no longer apply. Camera and Lens manufacturers have gradually been increasing prices over the last few years.

Just these two examples illustrate to some degree the escalation in camera equipment pricing and this is for equipment for sensors smaller than full frame.

This isn't a get out of jail card for Ricoh but more to demonstrate that higher prices isn't only a Ricoh thing.

AF Assist/Modelling Light Strategy

Okay. Here is a possible solution. Daisy chain your X-PRO on top of a Cactus V6 II trigger. You can force the Cactus V6 II to permanently have it's AF assist light on. It might work for you. I've used this setup myself purely to have the AF assist ON!

It would be great if you knew someone locally so you could try out this setup for your situation.

It's a bit more than just a re-brand.

We get:
- Focus limiter;
- Pentax lens coatings (assumption);
- Pentax lens corrections (assumption);
- 100% AF compatibility (as opposed to reverse-engineered AF).

We lose:
Image stabilization.

It's a bit more than a re-brand. Maybe not much but there is still a difference.

Well, any lens corrections should automatically be applied to a Pentax branded lens (as opposed to a 3rd party lens) so that is something better than just a re-badge assuming so do apply lens corrections. Anyway, weight saving compared to F2.8 lenses of similar focal lengths is great specially against the monster HD-FA.

Are we really THAT rare?

Yes we are rare but so are any kind of DSLR or mirrorless these days. I was in Rotorua, New Zealand that is full of tourists. In the morning I saw mainly Sony A6xxx series camera's while in the afternoon a few DSLRs. I think I saw one Olympus while the DLSR's were a mix of Canon and Nikon. About 1/2 1/2.

However, the overwhelmingly used camera's were cellphone and cellphones on selfie-sticks. Probably about 5-6 years ago, DSLRs were everywhere but they are certainly a dying breed these days.

Well, I bought a 2nd hand Fujifilm X-E1. I have to admit I don't like the X-trans sensor much though and keep thinking of getting rid of it.

I think in a few years time when the Olympus E-M5 III has gone down from it's ridiculous release price that might be a camera I would like to try. At least in Australia, the E-M5 III camera is excessively priced at around AUD$1,700 body only.

Pentax verses Godox

You are basically comparing an old generation sensor against a new generation sensor. A better comparison would be against a K70 or KP. I think then you will find that the Pentax are definitely an equal to Fujifilm, if not better due to the X-trans sensor having a few issues. I have a K3 and a KP and high iso is like night and day in the KP's favour.

Google waxy skin and worms in landscapes and you'll find some of the negative aspects of X trans. I have an X-E1 that I bought cheap to try Fujifilm and the waxy skin at high iso is very evident. Note this is first generation Fujifilm but when the X-E2 was released apparently high iso skin photo's were even worse. If I was a landscape photographer I'd stay clear of Fujifilm while if I was into portraits I'd do some serious research on the waxy skin issue first. Certainly try them if you are interested but do the research is my advice.

77mm vs Sigma 85mm

Thanks. I actually meant high frames per second mode. Lots of misses doing this but I believe it's also because the Sigma 85mm is a big lens and difficult to hold steady with live view mode on for lots of continuous frames.

I no longer do high frames per second mode now for these types of liveview shots.

At least with the KP it has face-detect AF in Liveview. Doesn't work so well that well in AF-C but in AF-S it is actually very good and worth a try with fast lenses.

I was pleasantly surprised with how effective it is to use.
