Sticky: An important message from the moderators

I did and the result was insults from one of the moderators and now they have disabled my "like" button. So much for democracy and free speech. If my comments offend the moderators and they are on the Pentax payroll then by all mean bar me from the site but do not try to shut me up when I have a comment about a system I started using some 40 years ago. After all I hope Pentax reads the comments and does something about the features or capabilities that are missing and we are asking for. They do not seem to have any other way for someone to talk to them. This is hopefully a legitimate platform for us to talk to Pentax albeit indirectly.

Expecting K-new - advancements in IQ with recent competition and the effect of the AC

I chose Fuji for video. I came to that conclusion after trying to get into the Sony system at substantially higher prices compared to Fuji. Even mighty Sony does not give you top notch video and photos in the same camera body. You have to buy two bodies and much more expensive lenses to accomplish the task. My K1 rules when it comes to stills and the Fuji does a decent job of video projects. I have since read up on BM and would choose either Panasonic or BM M43 for reasonably priced video only system.

I don't think that is a fair comparison as K1 is higher res than all the cameras listed. Choose R5, Z7 and A7RIV and see that K1 really compares favorably with cameras that are substantially higher in resolution. That is in no PS mode and if you choose PS then non of them come close. Let's remember that A7RIV is almost twice the resolution of K1. The only camera that really goes well above K1 is the Fuji GFX100. And that camera body is priced at $10K, more than 5-times the prices of K1.

I agree on that count too, 100%. We should qualify that with "given the cost." As I mentioned above FGX100 is better but for more than 5-times the cost. BTW, I had a chance to shoot the GFX 100 and did not like it. For some reason it did not feel right and the monster size files froze my fairly strong computer.

Me too. Every time I have bought a "9" rated items, it looked and functioned like a "10" to me. My guess is a minor scratch or two disqualifies the items from being a "10."

If your time horizon is the next 10 years, then get 128GB. The way we are going, next thing you know minimum recommended RAM is 32GB in a few years. A far as upgrading the CPU, in 10 years you may want to let go of the current machine and get an entirely new rig. I have an all decked out 2012 i7/6-core machine that I built myself (4G card, 32GB RAM, RAID 10!) . To upgrade the components today would cost me more than building a new machine from ground up and I have a rig that is 8 years old with all the components out of warranty AND support. For my money, if the difference is $200, I would get 128GB. Just my two cents.

645 A 120 or 67 100 (w LSC) for macro on 645D (or Z)

I do have the A120 macro. I do not have any 645 bodies. I bought it with the hope of getting into the 645 system but it never happened. I have used the A120 macro with an adapter with my K3 and K1 Pentax and a Canon 6D bodies. It is by far my favorite macro lens. I do have the F50 Macro and the FA100 macro and I still prefer the 120 over both of those lenses. You can get the lens for less than $150 on eBay. If you want a macro for the 6x7 then get one that is made for the mount. The adapters for 6x7 to 645 conversion, if you can find a good one, are fairly pricy and may not be worth the investment.

BTW, I shot the A120 on my K3 for a few paid gigs for a product photography project and the results were just fantastic. I paid around $250 when I bought my A120 back a few years ago. So for less than $150 for a native mount lens, I would say is a pretty good deal. For manual focus the A120 is just sublime. I also own a FA 200 for 645 system (for the same reason I bought the A120) and the manual focusing on that lens is not nearly as nice as the A120. Just my two cents.

Olympus will sell their Imaging business to Japan Industrial Partners

I live in Vegas and as such have (had) the opportunity to go to CES, WPPI, NAB and similar trade shows. I cringed every time I went by the booth with the Polaroid sign. They started doing mundane products such as iPhone cases and some other BS products under the name of a brand that used to be a legend. You are right. I hope they don't start selling key chains and throw away flash lights under Olympus brand because that would hurt. I am not an Olympus owner but I remember the OM1 from the film days and have shot with their recent digital products. Olympus made fine precision instruments in their cameras and their lenses are legends in their own right. It is a shame what is happening to these icons.

In that case, I would insist that my doc do my colonoscopy annually and make sure the images they give me are watermarked "Images courtesy of Pentax!!!"

I want to agree with you for the sake of my cameras surviving the tsunami of phone cameras! On a trip to Maine, I brought my beloved K1 and a bunch of lenses. I took my time setting up my camera for the ultimate shots! Meanwhile my wife when around and snapped a bunch of pictures. I shot RAW so that I can produce the ultimate image later! My wife had her images posted to social media an hour later. And here is the kicker, when we got back home she liked her images over mine for some 11x14 prints for around the house... and I liked them better too! Go figure. I guess she is a better photographer than me or she has a better camera!!!

I am afraid you are right. As much as I like my K1 and full frame, I think the APSc + medium format strategy of Fuji might survive the longest. Smart phone might be the ultimate winner!!

I am afraid this is the sign of things to come for other players too. I don't think anyone is immune. The "enemy" is the phone not the other camera manufacturers. All the camera manufacturers are in the same boat. The camera technology has hit a saturation point. I can print top notch 24x36 prints from my K5IIs files, and that is a camera from about 7-8 years ago!

Who is left, Panasonic and who else?

Just read the news too in another forum. We all were guessing that it was coming. The questions was who first. Now the million dollar question... who next? Sad and sobering day for photography. Never owned Olympus gear but tried their OM1 film cameras back in the days and some of the digital offerings at trade show more recently. Their optics are second to none and their buttery smooth shutter must be the best in the industry. What a shame.

In that case my choice would be A. Another suggestion, let the 70 and the 85 go in favor of the 77. The FA 77 is sublime. And yes the built in lens hood is beyond cool.

You have great lenses. The 31, 43 , 20-40 and the 85 are legends. You never sell legends. I have the 31, 43 and 77 Limited. I almost sold them a few times because I do not use them much due to my zoom lenses mainly the 28-105 on my K1. But ultimately I decided not to sell for the same reason I mentioned earlier. So finally I made a pact with myself that as long as I am a Pentaxian and even if I am not, I will never sell the trio and my K1. YOU DO NOT SELL LEGENDS.

The ultimate legend in your line up is indeed the 85 f1.4. A friend of mine has that lens and we decided to do a face-off between the 85 and my FA77. I am stunned how color matched they are. And as far as sharpness, they are two of the best lenses I have ever shot. Wide open, they both have serious purple fringing but that is an easy fix in post. The lens that you have and I have been lusting after is the 20-40. That is a gem of a lens. If I had the 20-40, I would never sell it. I see you are shooting APSc bodies. If anything, I would add a 15mm Limited to the line up for a wider coverage, If you do not need the money, do not sell anything. Your lenses are all classics in their own right.

Thank you Chris. I am going to make a note as I bought a 10x42 Pentax DCF CS 10x42 binoculars back in 2011. I did register the optic with Pentax but do not remember any of the details. I just found the purchase details in my Amazon account. So, if I need any repairs for the binos, I have to send them to Precision? I remember there was a mention of a $20 charge for the shipping back of the binoculars once they were repaired. Did you have to pay for the return shipping?

Thanks,
Boris

The FA Conundrum

I'll take zooms for overall convenience albeit at the expense of some image quality. In a totally non scientific test I did, I shot the same subject on a K3 with my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 and my FA Limited 77. Both lenses were set at f4. The center sharpness was equal but in the corners, Tamron zoom was noticeably sharper. To this they I cannot figure why. The FA Limited is a sublime lens but on that particular day the Tamron beat the mighty FA77 in the corners!!

Zooms are not what they used to be. I am old enough to remember terrible zooms we had back in the early 80's. It is not the same anymore in 2020. In my experience, pro class zooms can match or come very close to matching primes. When you consider the flexibility of a zoom vs. a prime lens, the zoom wins in most situations.
