Super Takumar 1.4/50mm 8-Element "killer" vs 7-Element Sample Comparison

Thanks for shooting the comparison and posting it here!

Very interesting comparison. I did not appreciate the colour pop that an 8 element could produce and will certainly keep a look out for an 8 element.
I have a 7 element Super Takumar currently, which I sometimes use instead of the FA50 f1.4. I like the convenience of the FA50 but prefer the wide open bokeh and rendering (not to mention lovely build) of the Super Takumar.
Although interestingly my Super Takumar does seem quite prone to flare - more specifically contrast washes out in bright light. A good hood is essential on mine. That said maybe mine has seen better days (it has a very minor spot of fungus on one element edge).

Is the K-01 still worth buying in 2018? Hell yes!

I have a K-1 but when travelling light its the K-01 thats in my (small) bag and I'm constantly surprised with the results.
The LCD may be a bit of a pain in bright light but it does a great job with AF accuracy and exposure. Also a little sharper than my K-5 was (due to weaker anti-aliasing filter). As you say its great paired with small limiteds. I have a DA40xs, DA15 and DA70 - makes for a capable but compact kit!

Not about to get wrid of my K-01!

Rokinon 24mm f1.4 factory refurb = misaligned optics

Oh dear thats not ideal.
Must admit I gave up on trying to get a good 14mm f2.8 when I got a copy that was decentered quite badly but factory said it was within specifications. I get the impression that the returned bad copies just get put back in circulation.

Despite having a Samyang 85 I love (and a 8mm fisheye which is Ok), it will now take quite a bit to convince me to get another Samyang unfortunately. Until they start taking quality more seriously at least.

Can't disagree. People do get so hung up on incremental features. I think that mirror less technology, it probably where everything will end up (with even better view finders over time) but at the moment there are some advantages to having a mirror too.
Enjoying my K-1 anyway!

K1 self-timer AF

No, I don't believe the K-1 can be set to perform AF with self timer.

In this situation I would normally focus on something the same distance to where you would be standing and then set to MF. Alternatively if you have a remote then you can set it to AF on the remote (and take photo after a delay too).

I don't see the white spots like that but then I tend to use Dark Frame Substitution (either in camera or manually take one before & after) - so I guess DFS must eliminate it.

Is there a single feature that would prompt you to upgrade?

I don't think one feature would ever be enough for me to upgrade.

The problem with features is they often don't perform as you imagined or come with some sort of disadvantage (e.g. double the resolution but worse high ISO performance).

Plus I'm still the biggest bottleneck in the quality of my photos - not my camera gear.

Thanks for point this out. You are right they are useful additions!

Regarding Hyper control system: I knew pretty much all of it but I honestly did not know about the different options for green button in hyper manual use - and will now change it to Av as this is what I usually need (rather than having to push AE-L then turn wheels again)!

Also did not realise that spot AF mode was finer grain than select in middle!

Why Do YOU Stay With Pentax?

The spin of saying "if someone was to buy all you existing gear", makes this an interesting question!

For me I would probably consider taking the deal to sell all my gear IF it was a good deal for me - but only because I have quite a collection of older lenses that I don't really need now and it would be an opportunity to consolidate my system with minimal effort!

Would I buy a different system, is a more of a difficult question. I must admit the new Canon EOS R looks pretty good (quite a few nice features) and I could probably live without the extra memory slot but what I don't like so much (roughly in order of importance) is:
* half the battery life (the K-1 is just right for my use)
* No Hyper Program mode (I really like Pentax Hyper program and hate having to always have to change mode dial between P, Tv and Av)
* not sure how the ergonomics would stack up???
* No astrotracer
* No pixel shift (not that I use it that often)

So on reflection I don't think there is quite enough there for me to change yet. Hopefully Pentax will keep innovating and I won't have to make that decision.

The K-01 (Que Oh Juan) 6 Years Too Late

Well I still use mine when travelling light! I usually take it teamed up with DA 40XS, DA 70 and DA 15 - a very compact and capable set up.
Often surprised at how good the results are (for what ever reason results seem to be consistently better than outings with my K-5).
I don't mind the styling personally and when I take the K-01 it amazing how many people ask me about it (as opposed to K-1 where no one has asked me about it).

The only significant downside for me is using the screen in sun light - which sucks - but there are ways to work around it (one hand holding + one hand shielding!). At times in bright sunlight I just shoot blind, which works out surprisingly often as the AF accuracy is pretty consistent.

Well I can't help you with that as I can install and run version 2 on my Google Pixel.
However I can no longer get it to connect to my K-1. Have tried reseting Wifi settings etc but no go. When I get time I will have to google it and see how people have managed to get it to work.

Night Sky Photography K-1 vs K-1 Mark II - Comparison Requests

Wow thats interesting. There is a difference in the WB setting the camera used between K-1 and K-1 II but that does not explain it all because if I set them to the same WB there is still a big difference.
In this instance the K-1 II has less noise perhaps but I like the output of the K-1 better.

I hope to pick one up later in the year but it gets even more expensive getting one in NZ.

All I can say is don't get a really cheap filter as I have had no end of issues with colour cast problems (that can be difficult to correct for) - ideally use filters people have used and recommend.

I was going to leap in and say yes but actually I can't find one example in my photos! I know I have in the past but certainly not recently as my preference is for something to be in focus somewhere in the image.

K-1 hands on after KP

Thanks for the comments. Must admit I quite like the look of the K-P and I think some reviews underestimated it, as its clearly a great all around camera.

Missing max shutter speed limit is not something I have noticed, personally, with the K-1 but no doubt it depends on your shooting style.
As I find the K-1 does a pretty good job with auto exposure, most of the time I live in Hyper-P (mostly locking aperture but occasionally shutter speed), followed by Manual and Bulb mode (for really long exposures). I does take a while to get to know camera though.
