I find the DA 35 Limited bokeh always pretty calm, I guess it's the advantage of being very sharp while having no aspherical elements.
In many regards it's the perfect lens.

Advice on Taking Portraits with K10D

There's no reason why you should not be using f/3.5 or wider unless you are using a lens that is not sharp at that setting.
Your 31mm and 77mm should be VERY VERY sharp at f/3.5.
In fact you should be able to take fantastic portraits at f2 or f/2.8 with those lenses.
Using center point focus should hopefully give you sharp focus on the eyes but as mentioned, if your K10D needs focus calibration, then that would be recommended. If you spend about an hour doing that, it would save you much time later...

Thematic The 2020 Monthly Challenge - April - Flash Photography

So now that I have a new (well, "repurposed") computer, and no more excuses, I went ant took a few pictures with a flash (AF360FGZ II). What I love about this flash is that it has HSS sync - and with that, this picture came out basically perfect right out of the camera:

And this banana cake picture came out better with the use of the flash...

On that last one, I had to meter a step down, and add my usual clarity values, but that was basically it... Both with SMC-F 50mm f/1.7 wide open. What a great lens. Taken with the K-S1.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll finish eating my piece

Thematic The 2020 Monthly Challenge - April - Flash Photography

This is a Monthly challenge to give us 12 different themes for the year to pursue photography - easy themes but themes that will make us have something to work on.

The full list containing each month's theme is at: The 2020 Monthly Challenge - PentaxForums.com

For April, the theme is "Flash Photography".
The rules are that there are no rules, as long as you fire a flash! Maybe you never used flash, or haven't used one in a long time, but think of creative ways to use a flash. Since a lot of us are indoors anyway because of the coronavirus, this presents a nice and timely opportunity to hone our skills and maybe learn a trick or two!

First, there are no awards... this is for fun only.

Second, it's not a "ok I posted my picture for the month, I'm done" challenge. It's meant so that you will have something to focus on every month. Ideally, you will post one picture every day based on the theme. But there's no pressure - no one's keeping tabs If you post one a week that's fine. If you post the best shot of the month that's fine too. Just go out and have fun and shoot, and hopefully be challenged to improve your photography.

Third, conversation is encouraged. What are you learning and what are you enjoying in regards to this month's theme?

I can't complain, first because my work hasn't skipped a beat, we're as busy as ever, even working from home (I'm in software development). Second, I have my trusty K-S1 and the K-50, as well as a mostly-broken* K-S2 that I was given recently that the person gave up after attempts to repair.

Oh and lovely colors in that last lake shot!

*Mostly broken: the mirror on the K-S2 is completely out of whack, and the use of manual aperture ring is somehow disabled. The person fixed the solenoid so lenses with A-contact stop down, at least. But by doing so broke other things... or it might have been already somewhat broken by a previous fix by the California guy who attempts to fix the solenoid, but that fix didn't last... anyway, those things that don't work I don't need anyway since the things this K-S2 doesn't do, the K-S1 does...
What is working well with the camera still, is video. Which is why I got it - it has a mic input so I can play around with video recording. None of my other cameras has a mic input. Oh and it has a flip screen also, which should help... and wifi to control the camera from the phone. Should be fun....

Do I need to upgrade from my K50?

The Pentax KP is currently 746.95 dollars at BHPhoto and Adorama. The K-5IIs can be had used for about $250 as luftluss said.

The differences:

K-50 to K-5IIs - in terms of inage quality, the difference is that the K-5IIs does not have an AA filter so the images will be a bit sharper. It's also 14-bit RAW so the images will have a bit more "room" for post processing. That is it. The other differences are mainly a more pro body and some extra features that the K-50 does not have.

K-50 to KP - 24MP will give you significantly more room for cropping. It doesn't sound like much but it is. Of course your lenses need to keep up - you can't just use a low quality lens like a DA 18-55 on it, and think you can crop to your heart's desire. Newer lenses are recommended. What do you currently have?

The K3 is another option. It also has 24MP, no AA filter and 14-bit RAW so your images would improve tremendously. A higher burst rate than the KP as well. Used prices go for about 350-450 depending on the condition. That would leave room for a DA*300mm f4 if you don't have one yet, in your budget - they can be found easily right now for 650-700 dollars in the used market. You can go whichever way you'd like but that is what I would do if I were in your shoes with your budget and your stated photographic objectives :)

SMC DA* 16-50 vs HD DA 16-85

Me - personally - I would probably go with the DA*16-50 because I don't mind the size (and the 16-85 isn't a small lens either anyway). Though since you have a K-5IIs, the smaller aperture of the DA 16-85mm might not be a big issue for you - and you might enjoy the longer reach.
The DA*16-50 has its issues with flare and PF at the wide end, but it does generate some pretty amazing pictures, especially at smaller apertures. And it doesn't look bad at larger apertures if you shoot more for bokeh than for edge-to-edge sharpness. Meaning, it does a great job in what it's designed for - landscapes at smaller apertures, portraits/details at larger apertures.
Mind you, I don't have either one, but I have the DA 16-45mm f4 which has a similar range compared to the DA* 16-50mm f2.8, hence my answer...

...and to be perfectly honest, I find the DA 16-85mm pictures to be very good technically, but I have yet to see "pixie dust" or anything "magical" in its rendering... and that's a completely subjective thing! Not trying to start a fight over it....

Limiteds - DA 21 or DA 70 as my next lens? As a treat to myself...

Some more comments...

I see the same thing you see in the DA 70 shots! But I'm also seeing a lot of it in the HD version of the 21, not so much in the SMC version. But it could be just in my head.

Thanks for sharing your progression... very interesting read. Though I think in my case the 16-85 is not going to be an option. I've never seen a 16-85 shot that made me go "wow" or made me feel like I was immersed in the scene. Personal taste, I know...

I do like the shots I see from the SMC-A 20 2.8 a LOT. Same with the SMC-M 20 f4.
I'm interested in hearing about your experience but I have never seen an A 20 2.8 for less than 400 dollars ( and they're usually 500-600) that wasn't full of fungus and/or haze and/or balsam separation. Even the ones that have all that sell for over my budget (in the 300s). The M 20 f4 is also up there in price these days.

Mike, you make the most compelling case for the DA 21 yet :)
My previous experience with the 21 was marred, I think, by the fact that the K20D was my camera and the DA 21 is not a good match for that sensor. Thinking about this, yesterday I did a flickr search on K20D and 21mm Limited, and I don't really like any of the pictures I've seen.
I was almost decided for the 70 until I read your post... thank you!

I'm at a bit of a loss for words regarding your experience... I think you might like different things from what other people like.
Regarding the 21... I believe you when you say that you couldn't get good pictures out of it, but I know others can... and I'd like to hear your experience with the 70 if you have any, or at least know why you don't recommend it.
I do know that my DA 35 Limited is better than my DA 35 2.4 - it's obvious to me, though they are both equally as sharp. And I can't get excited about the 16-85... and it's out of my budget anyway.

I was reading all the responses last night and today and want to thank everyone for thoughtful and helpful responses! Like I expected, it does give me a lot to think about.

As I said the sale of a couple of lenses got cancelled so I'm not doing this right now but it will happen... one I think soon and then I might buy the other later this year hopefully. Hobby funds usually take a while and budget is always what limits me...

Also, I want to say that I would have more use for the 70 than just portraits. I love short tele landscapes and scenery in general, and the DA 70 seems to really excel in that regard. Just to give an example, to me the best Ansel Adams landscapes - and the ones that to me define his work - were all in the short telephoto range. His wide angle stuff doesn't even move me...

So a comment on a few posts...

And you make a very compelling case for it.
I keep seeing - your pictures are an example of it, and so are @northcoastgreg 's - a difference between the HD and SMC versions of the 21mm lens. I know you have the HD, and so does Greg - they just seem to have more of that "Limited" magic than the regular SMC version. Could be in my mind? Could be the processing?
So in that case, it would make sense to get the SMC DA 70 first (which I can afford sooner as I see them going for sometimes less than 200 but usually in the low 200s) and buy the HD 21 later when I can afford it (high 200s/early 300s for a used copy)?

Both of course  But I don't do just street, I am a jack of all trades and a master of none, currently

Yes that is a great shot but imagine that taken with the DA 70 :) Or one of my 50s, or my DA 35 Limited!

I still have one lens that I have yet to ship out and the buyer's been very understanding... the issue is I don't have a scale like you and I need some packing materials. Otherwise I could do it online as you said, I've done it once before (and got the weight wrong but thankfully I went to the postal office even though I had it prepaid, so I could pay the difference and the package did not get rejected).

Ah other than a couple test shots of my Christmas tree years ago, I don't think I've ever really done sunstars purposefully... so if I can eventually afford it I think I'd love the HD version of the 21.

@Tokyoscapes had a similar thought. I can't really do that because:
  • I would miss the 16mm from the 16-45

  • The DA 35 Limited is my only 1:1 macro, and I don't think the 20-40 can really replace it. It's just magical....

  • The 16-45 has the wobble so probably not worth hardly anything (though it doesn't affect optics at all) and the DA 35 2.4 has a little scratch on the front element and the filter ring is 1/3 broken off (no I didn't do either of those things... family members who think the camera and lens could be set at the floor of the minivan...

But I will agree that the 20-40 is a lovely lens and if I could afford it I think I'd prefer it over the 21.

You're bursting my naivete bubble

Like I said I (with no experience in such things) *expected* a DFA* to have tighter tolerances and better QA, but I guess reality is different and they can be as unreliable as any lens... the experience of some people I've heard about that had expensive lenses basically fall apart in their hands seems to corroborate that.

That's it, NOW I have an excuse for not having star lenses

I haven't seen a lot of his videos but he does seem to have a thing for focus breathing, no? It's almost like it's the most important aspect of a lens for him and he's so proud that he reports on this while all other reviewers don't...

I find the actual experience from users like Sandy here who hinted he'd sell his DFA* 70-200 f/2.8 before the 70-210 f4, are worth more than 1,000 internet reviewers... but on top of that of course you have to take sample variation into consideration. I would expect the DFA 70-210 to have more variation than the DFA* 70-210 because a star lens should have better QA and tighter specification of components.

You don't get the sensor banding issue at ISO 1600 and higher with your D7100?

I've looked at Nikon a couple times through the years but not having IBIS was always a deal killer for me (I prefer primes). If I were to ever switch, I'd go all in. I don't see any appeal in having multiple systems, in my case I think it would hinder my photography even more... I often think I should just pick one body and lens and stick with it for a long time.

That is pretty impressive in terms of colors I'd say... I think I'd prefer the Pentax 50 1.2 lens as I really like Pentax colors but those are very nice as well. I also love the Leica rendering and colors (from seeing pics of course, I've never been able to get my hands on any Leica that wasn't just a badge...) - so I'm looking forward to seeing what you will get from the K10D+Leica lenses!
