Welcome to Picture of the Week (POTW) for the period 28 March to 11 April 2018. rjbrett has asked me to host thiis week, #499

POTW is a great spot to show off six or fewer shots you take or are editing within the thread's date range. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

To post your great photos, just hit reply and attach away

feel free to start immediately, if not sooner

• consider including in your post any special circumstances or tips on technique or equipment which might be interesting to others.

• identify your camera and lens if that information is easily available to you.

And please invite other Pentaxians to join us.

Some rules:
1) No theme, just post your favorite pix
2) Six or fewer images per person per thread to prevent thread bloat
3) Any Pentax, Ricoh or Samsung camera, film or digital

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM), but if you are interested and willing to host POTW, please send me a PM, before I contact others.

Thanks for hosting StephenHampshire. What! No Trains? :) That first shot of yours can happily contribute to the mini theme of dragons over at I Spy thread. The Statue is superb! And like Nobody, I enjoy seeing your posts here rjbrett, Nobody, those are super shots of planes. Do you live near the airport, or a pilot, or work at the airport. Where I live, the best shots I can get is through windows at the viewing floor. Not exactly the best spot. A contribution from me.

Here are a few shots from a recent visit to Tofino. These were taken at Chesterman Beach near the Wickaninnish Inn, if you know the area.

Jordan Valley is a little wide spot in the road on Hwy. 95 out in the desert of SE Oregon and it's one of my favorite places to visit. It's one of those spots that always seems to provide some interesting scenes.

Machinery Another old warbird - Typhoon 1b of 137 Squadron RAF

Today I got hold of a pile of old documents and photographs belonging to my late father-in-law, JA (Jack) Horne. Families split up and stuff goes who knows where. But someone kindly tracked us down and returned this material. Jack was in the RAAF, but like a lot of RAAF pilots, served in Europe with the RAF during WWII. He was in 137 Squadron, and flew ground attack Hurricanes and Spitfire Vb's before ending up with the Hawker Typhoon 1b. These are shots of him and his usual aircraft "SFX". The rocket equipped Typhoon was a potent force - the eight six-inch rockets delivered something like a broadside from a battleship. Jack was the first pilot to take down a V1 Flying Bomb (the Doodlebug) with rockets. He ended up with a tally of four V1s (one short of being an Ace).

The Typhoon was a big fighter. It was developed to be an interceptor but the engine would not perform at altitude. However, nothing could touch it for speed at sea level and it could carry a decent payload. Because of this it became a ground attack work-horse. Squadrons usually crossed the English Channel at wave-top height to stay under the radar and there were instances where propellers were bent when an aircarft slipped a bit low and hit a wave.

Of course, it was risky flying. Jack completed two tours and was shot down or crash landed on several occasions. The pics tell a bit of a story. I assume it was a squadron mate who took the photos. This must have been before D-Day as they got black and white ID stripes on the underside for D-day and later.

Tyhoon 1B "SFX" of 137 Squadron (piloted by F/O Jack Horne). The payload is eight 6-inch rockets (plus four wing-mounted cannon).

Airborne! Wheels not yet raised. Whoever took the photo panned nicely as close examination of the full size scan shows the background is slightly blurred.

Back from a successful op. Jack Horne at far left.

Ditched! Jack Horne on wing at left after crash landing on a beach (probably in Southern England).

K1 Mk ii. Is Pentax marketing as dead as Tony Northrup says?

When is Canon going to make a camera with a sensor as good as a 5 year old Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R point & shoot?

When are Canon & Nikon going to put IBIS (now used for 15 years by other makers) in their cameras??

When is Sony going to make a mirrorless with rugged weather resistance as good as my 10 year old K10D?

When is Fuji, Olympus, or Panasonic going to go full frame (and people say Pentax was late to FF)?

Every one of camera makers focus (ha!) on different types of innovation and are 5-15 years behind in others.. There are no leaders in every technology. Every camera maker excels in some areas and "fails" on others. The challenge for camera buyers is to pick a maker that is aligned with the types of photography they do.

I look at Pentax and see a company that is pushing the frontiers of IQ and ambient light photography. They are expanding the size of the exposure triangle both by enabling slower shutter speeds (via SRII) and enabling higher usable ISO (which permits the use of faster shutter speeds and/or narrower apertures in low EV lighting conditions). The 1 or 2 EV of noise reduction promised by the K-1ii a big innovation. Pixelshift offers an astounding leap in IQ (both resolution and noise) and now Pentax has expanded the usability of Pixelshift.

Excellent trip report :) Hluhluwe is still one of my favourite parks.

 The exif says 500mm ;)

But really, not all buffalo are out to get you. It's the old, grumpy bulls roaming around on their own you should be scared of. They'll try to kill you given half a chance. I guess being evicted from the herd does that to you... The big family herds are ok. Sort of the opposite of the behaviour of elephants.

The only thing wrong with this image is I can only see 4 lens cases, a few more would have been better. :D

OK that and that I look fat... but I digress...
