Pentax K-3 Specifications

If all this is true, and it has the level of quality and refinement we've seen Pentax/Ricoh is capable of, I think we could see the finest aps-c stills camera ever created. I wonder about this SR AA effect and if it will be useful in video. If so, and depending on how the sensor is subsampled, this has a real and unknown possibility to be the finest video dslr ever created as well.

(I think all the video haters, who are likely getting everything they want with this camera, complaining about others also getting what they want is just silly. XD :shake head: :roll eyes: children will be children.)

K-01 Critics and Camera Price

I've been saying all along that I wanted a "mirrorless" camera. I even posted a couple comments on dpr about all the other benefits possible without a mirror, that seemed to change the tone of the conversation as well as give pause to a couple mirrorless detractors who were participating in that conversation. Now that this camera has come out I realize I've been beating the wrong drum. It's not mirrorless that I want, its a compact system camera. I only used the term mirrorless because that seamed to be an emerging consensus. Now CSC seams to be emerging as the new term for the category because people are realizing that it more accurately describes the point. I wish the other "mirrorless" proponents and I who really wanted a compact system camera from Pentax had used the correct term. So no, a lower price won't make me interested in buying the confusingly pointless (to me) K-01, the camera that (allong with the Q) seams to preclude any chance of the camera I want from the manufacturer who could have done it best. The 40xs, as cool as it is, to me has become a symbol of regret, a stinging reminder of what Pentax could have done. Now I'm left to choose from manufacturers who's offerings don't really excite me.

I wonder (after trying to reconcile all the various rumors into one cohesive idea) if this K-01 might have some sort of wide converter/ telecompressor in the mirror box space that would restore FOV/DOF characteristics of FA lenses. My understanding is that what held this up before was a Kodak patent. As we all know, Kodak sold/is selling their patents so maybe that allowed Ricoh to buy or license that patent. Come to think of it maybe Kodak's problems and sale of patents were what really held up this camera after all rather than the merger, natural disasters ect.

Ah, I assumed you meant a rectalinear UWA, which I would sure love. For nudibranchs, gobys, clown fish, ect. you need macro. And, I'd want the longest lens possible to shoot sharks.:) UW system from pentax is a pipe dream anyway, but I'd sure consider it if they made it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a consumer photo printer wearing a Pentax logo in a couple of years, to compete directly with Canon on the consumer end of the document imaging side of their business.

Ricoh to buy Pentax camera business from Hoya

As I see it, the only thing that is 100% certain about Ricoh's involvement with the Q product is the timing of its announcement in relation to the announcement of the acquisition of Pentax. There seams to be no question considering the timing of the release that Ricoh wanted it announced under Hoya. Would Hoya have released it at all if not for the sale to Ricoh is unknown. Hoya certainly doesn't care about releasing a turd from a division they never wanted, and are off loading. And, clearly Ricoh has little confidence in the Q product or they would not have required its release prior to announcing the acquisition. I could be wrong bit it seams Ricoh wants to judge reaction to the concept and then quickly kill it if it flops. Judging by the online reaction to Q thus far, if I am correct, it will never hit shelves in the US. If Ricoh blindly tries to push marketing on the still born Q, that indicates they truly believe in the product, and I can have no confidence in Ricoh-Pentax. If they quickly kill it howeber, I have high hopes. So, the Q is good for something, its the perfect litmus test for Ricoh-Pentax's direction going foreward.

Will Ricoh buy out influence your Pentax purchase?

The Q has a bigger influence on my decision. I had been waiting on a pentax mirrorless and had high hopes, but the thought that Pentax thought the Q was somehow a good idea makes me think they are too out of touch. It would make sense however to announce such a high risk product before announcing the sale. It gives you the chance to judge consumer reaction to the product and kill it if its bad, then blame Hoya to save face. So, if Ricoh kills the Q then I may still go with Pentax when a good mirrorless is released. If they keep the Q however, I have grave fear for the future of the brand and cannot risk buying into the system.

Really, Toyota is your model for openness? LOL.

But, seriously, I think this apology, plus things like that robot camera, show that Pentax is not arrogant, nor do they take themselves too seriously. While fantastic products like the K5 and Kr show they are committed to continuing to advance already stellar products. This is the type of company I would be comfortable entering into a long term relationship with.

A revolutionary idea for the supposed Pentax Mirrorless.

HTC Sprint Hero. It was great at first but gets worse with every update. I definitely don't want to start a phone fight here but my impression of open source software is its always "improving fast" and never really getting anywhere. That's great if you love geekin' around with gadgets but I need my camera to respond exactly the way I expect every time. But, that's just me, I'm an Apple kind of guy not a Linux kind of guy.

I have, however, long been a proponent of an off camera app and built in WiFi, especially if you could see a live view feed on your phone. Imagine the candid shots you could get. I'm also one who believes completely eliminating the rear LCD on a super small system camera would be beneficial, with WiFi mobile tethering.

Please, please, please, no buggy, fragmented, unreliable, non-secure, open source software on my camera. this would be enough to make me jump ship on any brand no matter how much of an investment in glass I had. A camera as bad as this s#!? android phone I'm typing this on? No thank you. An API and WiFi? Absolutely. But, the very thought of open source firmware makes me sick to my stomach!

That said, I respect everyone's opinion, but, my vote is no no, please no.

N - non-mirror? Same letter as NX, NEX, perhaps indicating aps-c somehow?

C - camera? compact? Or new mount called C mount?

And with sequential model numbering like GH1 GH2, so they are naming it right in line with other mirror-less cameras already on the market.

That's right, I ment the 'announcement in Feb.' rumor as reported by photo rumors and I believe K rumors. Don't know if it was ever brought up here. I'll edit my previous post.

I'm just stating an opinion that the existing rumors of an EVIL this year all seam odious. I hope I'm wrong as I'm one who is trying to make said purchasing decisions. We'll all know soon enough I guess.

I'm not buying the rumors of a Pentax mirrorless camera this year anymore. After going back and reviewing all the rumors and statements about it there is a real pattern. All the rumors saying its coming this year are from mysterious "unidentified sources". While every statement from anyone at Pentax states that they are looking at the market and have no firm plans. I'm sure they have looked into a normal me too EVIL and also a super compact digital auto 110 type camera. It seams they are leaning toward the auto 110 concept. But I don't believe they have decided to go ahead with it. I'm just speculating like everyone else but reading between the lines I'd bet its not happening. The February announcement rumor appears to be just confusion over the coming Nikon Evil, which will be announced in the next couple of months. I do hope I'm wrong, as this is the type of system I'm interested in investing into. I also hope a digital auto 110 won't be just a small sensor compact with interchangable lenses. I just can't see the point of interchangeable lenses without the quality and DOF control at least a 4/3 sensor, and preferably larger. Anyway, I'll sadly probably end up with the Nikon system because they have said it will be more pro than other systems. Everyone else is targeting the entry level market, and I want a highly portable enthusiast/pro system. I think Pentax could really dominate this sector if they would as their strengths play to the concepts ideals, but, Pentax won't take a risk and so will never return to their former market position. My only connection to Pentax is emotional, stemming from my film days shooting an sp1000 and super program, but I would still like to stick with Pentax. Here's hoping anyway.

Photo Rumors: Digital Auto 110 in 2011

There is a lot I would hope Pentax would retain from the original design of the auto 110, other than looks and size, though I agree that the original lens mount wouldn't be practical or wise.

Tiny system lenses: Mostly great primes with only one or two zooms, f2.8 would be acceptable f2 would be exceptional.

In body diaphragm: To contribute to overall system compactness. Perhaps the rear element group could be left in the camera as well making lenses potentially even smaller.

At least 110 size sensor: The 4/3 sensor is the only reason I haven't gone with a gh2, but if it were nearly as small as auto 110 it would be a good compromise.

Some other things I'd like to see in the system.

WiFi: Simple functionality that would allow you to review and even process your pics, as well as control some camera functions. Would be awesome of it could be used to turn your phone into a remote view finder, but that's probably just day dreaming.

Minimalist controls: Mode switch with just off and hyper program, green button, video button, shutter button, three control dials (one Around the lens mount aperture ring style) front and rear control dials would customizable click and turn functionality. Simple 4way controller with customizable buttons.

No rear LCD: This would save a lot of bulk as well as making the body more rugged. You could still review your shots on your phone through WiFi. Or just wait till you get home to find out what you got, like film days, sort of. There could also be an optional tilt and swivel LCD that would connect to the hot shoe, like the one Sony just released, with its own set of controls. There would be a small top LCD or OLED for camera function feedback.

No built in flash:

Swapable EVF: You could swap on an optical view finder specific to the lens you are using, great for action shots as there is no black out. Or you could go with just the optional LCD if there is a reason you'd want that.

WR: this would be the greatest extreme outdoor adventure camera ever made so naturally it would need WR. It would also be simple to do with such minimalist controls.

In body auto focus motor: No reason to carry multiple motors with multiple lenses. Perhaps an SDM motor at the lens mount.

Titanium and carbon fiber construction of body and lenses: Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

SR: Would maybe need to go for compact-ness, but I would want it in there.

I would pay up to $1800 for the body, and buy every lens they made for the system at up to $600 each. Well, I guess that's enough daydreaming for now.

If this one proves to be true, I predict whatever full frame boosters we still have around here will be up in arms and beside themselves. I, personally, hope it is true, both cameras would be interesting to me. If they use the old auto 110 lenses, they'll have to go with a 4/3 sensor, meaning most likely a deal with Panasonic. Hope that wouldn't sour the relationship with Sony. Sony is known to be an anticompetitive brat when it comes to selling their sensors. Hence, Foveon getting crushed, and never becoming anything.

Dear Pentax,

I know the ink is probably already dry on the design of your new mirrorless camera. But, I'm just sick of people saying that mirrorless is for point and shooters who want better image quality. Pardon my french, but, that's just bull s#!*. I want a mirrorless prothusiast camera for those who are passionate about photography and other things like hiking, climbing, biking, ect. I can't believe nobody is going after this niche! It doesn't have to fit in my d@#" pocket (for those who think that's the only reason for compactness). It just needs to be small and light as it can be without sacrificing quality. It should be designed with size and weight of the entire system in mind. Everything that can be in the body (SR, focus motor) is, so I don't have to carry much redundancy if I want to take several lenses. Maybe even make lenses in two part systems so that the rear portion of the lens could be combined with different fronts to make several excellent primes in a much smaller package (don't know if its feasible, but if so...). Naturally it should be weather sealed and have an adapter to allow backwards compatibility with all k mount lenses. If anyone ever makes a camera like this they can have as much of my money as they want to ask for it. Oh yea, great video to, obviously I don't want to carry two cameras. While I'm on video, I realize you don't give a flying rats a$$ about the American market these days, but, would it really be so hard to allow the option to shoot 24 frames per second? Anyway, that's my dream list. Congrats on the incredible K5.

Reputation Points System

As for perks...

I actually came in here (the suggestions forum) to post this suggestion in a new thread, but, I think it fits here. It seams to be a favorite pastime around here to speculate about what Pentax's next _____ will be. So, how about a rumor market system where people can put their rep. points where their mouth is. It may help us figure out who actually knows something.;) Maybe it would be better to have separate points for the market which were initially gained through the 'likes' system. Then at least people would have to pick things they actually think will happen rather than bullet points off their wish list. I think it would be fun. Just some thoughts.

I heard a Rumor....Firmware update

I agree that this would be one of the possible results, which is why I said it would be an extremely bold move. The other risk is that if they cripple it to much, some may go with a competitor, who would have gone with Pentax had the full capabilities been known. The trick would be to make it look like they were just continuing to develop the product further. The opposite result is also possible. For example, the K5 was an excellent camera even with firmware v1.0, and many bought it. Then, those who were happy enough with the camera to buy it the way it was got a bonus. If this firmware does actually increase the fps, without limiting it to live view, the price could potentially go back up to full price. The early adopters now have had their camera longer, and received two unexpected bonuses, and paid the same as someone who just recently bought the camera. I for one would be willing to buy the camera sooner if I felt like I wouldn't get it for a better price by simply waiting a short time. So, by keeping the prices high, they could encourage many customers to buy sooner rather than later. Those who will wait for lower prices will still get their camera, they'll just have to wait a little longer. In the end though this is just a conspiracy theory born in the speculative recesses of my own mind, and based on rumors I find unlikely to be true. It's kind of fun to speculate though, which seams to be a favorite pass time around here.:)
