D-FA* 85mm f1.4 also coming

True. But I think this can be seen even simpler. If you imagine that for Ricoh the main question is simply: is there an imaging sensor and processor available that can offer better video specs? Followed by the question: can we use it for our entire lineup (APS-C, FF, 645)? And then the cost come into consideration. And here it is about priorities: if the most suitable and available processor does not support video to it's best they probably would still use it and not look for another solution at this moment (see Ricoh GRIII). I am convinced, that as soon as there will be a new pipeline available all formats will get faster updated than anyone might have thought, and probably natural progression will bring better video anyway. Maybe not what some might hope, but would someone still be surprised that Ricoh stickes to it's core competence and video is available if it does not complicate things?

Exactly. I don't know what FF-naysayers should be. Maybe there is a common group with those, who complain that K3+ is not given the full attention anymore? I like the K-1 and considered it for professional (read: in my job) use, but must say for my personal needs the obvious increase in weight, bulk and price of according lenses was a major constraint that was evident before they were announced.

Who says that Ricoh could not have gone the path of Fuji with APS-C in DSLR and brought the 645 to competitive level, pricewise, sizewise, performance wise, instead of the K1? But as you said, photoptimist, the larger sensor is not mainstream, thus also the processing pipeline would have to be adapted and it would have it's price.

Reading here sometimes really gives the impression that anything that happens is just comented negatively. In most cases that is just natural and rarely (yes, there might be some posters) the complaints come from the same people. Some decisions suit sometimes these individuals more, sometimes others. And it seems to be an unwritten rule of the whole internet, that everyone has to comment on new developments, even if he newer was in the target group for that. Porsche has a new sportscar? Fail, I need more space in the trunk...;)

In the light of first reviews of the new developments in the FF mirrorless area some disappointments appear.
I find this statement under the Z7 AF-test at dpr quite interesting:
“G G
Neither Nikon nor Canon really needed a FF mirrorless camera. They needed was to improve their live view mode and perhaps add an EVF option. They have been drawn into this quagmire by Sony. How this will end up remains to be seen.“
link

High vignetting, noticeable sharpness dropoff in extreme borders, a soso AF performance and 2-3 EV less AF sensitivity! Oh boy, if Pentax would have come out with something like that...
Well, maybe the late bird can do something better here.

Also agree with ogl and you. Just a little bit of upmarket orientation could bring a great contestant to the ruggedized/travel market. I tried to use one of the previous WG on a kite, but the lack of manual settings (only Program or Scene...), fixed/ manual focus (give me lock to infinite...), intervalometer (unusable), RAW... and overall image quality (give me a larger sensor, even if for the price of less zoom) let me keep the GR for this purpose.
It can't be that hard to give such a camera a decent user interface...

Haha, I am with you here. More often then not this is neither news nor rumours, but wishes and fears. Nevertheless, I do like a good portion of speculation, it might allow discussions about features, to see if someone else is thinking along the same lines. But I would prefer if there would be a better separation between those and proper news; mixing these spoils the fun, both for speculation and information seeking people like me.

Hm, this is getting interesting now, since the price of the Tokina is really as close as it can get and some preventive complains turned out to be premature the shere fact that there is a comparable product which might be at a certain point cheaper than the original seemt to be the target of dissatisfaction? Poor Ricoh, they really can not do it right ;-)

But being at that, an original product guarantees some additional things a third party may or may not fulfil. There will always be some gambling with reversely engineered mounts and communication protocols. Wasn't there something with the famous Sigma Art and some comeras not focussing correctly? Who do you approach in such cases? Do you send the camera and lens to Sigma? Nikon will probably just refuse to do anything about this fact...

And which camera model would give you the equivalent of a K1(II) with 36 Mpix and image stabilisation with this lens and offering full support for it? I'm speaking of real world use now, not polemics.

Thank you for posting it.

I think this is an interesting read and even if it is to a certain degree controlled message (it's by an ambassador for Tokina and Hoya) it nicely shows the qualities and versability of this lens. The emphasis on the benefits of such a lens in various photographic settings, that can be correlated equally to the DFA*, is a nice counter-image to technical gearheady assesments from gear centered sites.

Absolutely agreed. Why is it so attractive for some to suggest things, that are completely without any basis? Neither has Ricoh any history in video oriented cameras (lately and above Theta) nor where there any indications or communicated plans for that. It's like suggesting in a car forum that you would buy a Ferrari immediately if it would be smaller, with only two wheels, or larger, with more loading power. There are companies who produce motorbikes and pickuptrucks on the market, wouldn't it be wise to just go there?

Are this the same people that complain about a potential loss of detail of a camera boasting the Photographic Dynamic Range above it's peers?
Noone has ever visually been able to point to a visible difference in nightskyphotos, still some people keep on using the star eater adjective, which is absurd.

I would assume that some things would work simply with mirror up, thus having the same viewfinder offering either the image from the matte screen with some information superimposed, or the stream from liveview, with everything that is possible with that.
Anyhow, based on nothing but purest speculation, for sure.

Right, if Ricoh has to sell 500 units of lowest level cameras to get the same revenue as with 50 higher class ones, they for sure have more chances to go for the second route. I imagine if out of 1000 people 200 consider a pentax then, first of all they have shown some interest in having done some research and Ricoh would rather sell to 25 the higher class model than to 50 the mass level one.

Before this goes to far:
he indeed said that he sees the KP a very capable camera in APS-C, especially in comparison with another company, offering after two generations now a model with IBIS, that is in the end larger as a KP. He would personally call the KP an successor to the K3 and the next model will not be a K3III, as Urs said.
Yes, he expressed his wishes on some topics, it (no surprise) seems that this japanese company does not provide much information on future products. For 2019 he mentioned that the K70 and K3 are old models and that everyone can come to a logical conclusion considering this. Especially as it will be 100 year anniversary, and the LX was a model released for an anniversary too - just as an example of this fact, not as a hint on the camera type to be expected.

Photokina 2018 Q&A - What would you ask Ricoh?

Thank you for clearing up some questions regarding the GRIII.
To be honest, they had the development manager for GR there, therefore I wouldn't have thought that general questions to the (future) lineup would be answered in any more detail than they were. If they would have been there with any information they would have wanted to communicate they would have organised a press conference. And maybe after the outing of many other companies some options in development might be enforced or adapted. Would be just wise.

I would not want to be an Olympus user atm. Will m4/3 survive? ApsC is not larger camera and lenswise, for high IQ also Panasonic now goes for FF... ouch, that must hurt if you are invested there... or did I miss something?

Now, this is a hands on... and, most interesting in my book: the contacts for adapters at the lens collar.
I have the sad feeling my GW wideangle and GM macro adapters might not be usable anymore, but the curiosity to see what will be possible with that makes up for that.

As I said before, I think the peak in camera sales is over. Just because the offers are so mature, that everyone with the funds and willing to research can fulfil almost all of his photographic needs with the latest generation of cameras and equipment. The countless new offers don't bring anything significant to the core principles of photography - the quality of the resulting image.
10 new mirrorless or whatever cameras don't change this and show only that the market is not driven by innovation towards higher quality but by multiple attempts of somehow keeping the revenue for manifacturers and for this the user has to be seen as a consumer. This consumer should not be happy with his equipment, even if he might have bought it just two years ago. Despite the fact that there will be no or minimal gain in image quality the consumer should have the feeling that ha should not stop buying new equipment.
Other industries, like software industry, try to keep this constant revenue by not selling software products, but having monthly subscriptions. It seems to work out for them, even if consumers have the feeling someone is ripping them off.
I am also curious what will happen with all this contenders, putting their money on similar horses. Will they be able to get the ROI they expected?
Maybe Ricoh is really in a better position here, smaller investments, slow but constant flow by allowing people to save enough money for the next purchase to complete their system with equipment that really gives better IQ, like the DFA* 50...

Okay, the last sentence was with some irony... hehe

I tend to disagree. But I see a problem with my planned argumentation: backwards compatibility is also for USB-C given, you might always use a Standard USB A plug on the charger side. But I have to confess that I don't know if this then again requires internal electronics to reach the 8 V... my assumption is, that this is part of the specifications, though no additional electronics in the camera would be needed. It would just charge slower (regular) while with PD you could benefit from shorter cycles, as modern smartphones and other devices offer. But I'm now in guessing-territory...

I don't think so. USB C PD (Power delivery) is specified to provide any necessary voltage from 5-20 V up to 100 W or 5 A. I would much appreciate this standard in all my cameras and external chargers. This would reduce the amount of different cables for laptop, mobile phone and camera+chargers to one type and chargers would be interchangeable.
