I only have an 02. I've been "away" for a while from this forum and photography in general.

Recently, i find that I carry my Q with the 02 more often than my other digital which is a k200d with the 16-45.
With this in mind, I've started to look into updating my k200d by looking at what's available for the Q thinking that there'd be more available

I see that there is now
06 zoom: ~70-200 with fixed 2.8
08 zoom: UWA variable aperture (~ 18-28/21-33)
body cap lens

What I would like to see are lenses that would match the ease of carry of the Q system - more pancake lenses.
I believe the Q systems strengths should be played up not "toyed" with. :D

In general - the system should have the holy trinity wide/normal/portrait. Currently all we have is the normal with "toy" wide, fisheye, and portrait
at least the system has the 02/06/08 zooms; however the 02 should be updated to go along with the Q's compact size

1. 02a - pancake wide-normal zoom, 24 min -50/85 equivalent. something similar in size to the m4/3rd GM1/GM5 kit zoom; ie a "pancake" zoom. I'm ok if the long end is <85 as long as the the size (how far it sticks out from the body) is less than the current 02
2. 01a - pancake prime or wide, possibly a 28/35mm equivalent to match the 01's 40/47 mm equivalent, even if its an f2/f2.5. or they can just make the 01 more compact.
3. a 300mm or greater equivalent

At this point, I'm sorely tempted to get the GM1/GM5 m4/3rd system since it now has all the above in its system.

good point
however, knowing that the camera focused couldn't you go to manual and just go -4EV from what the camera is metering? or will it be a case where you won't get any meter reading at all?

New Pentax mirrorless concept - Adapts the Pentax 50/1.2 to be 35/0.95!!

You'd have to read and understand the white paper section 6 - "Its too good to be true! - Part 3, MTF is increased". I've skimmed through it but still don't understand it. My simple takeaway from it is that it is similar to looking at a reduced image size. Someone with better knowledge of the physics of this phenomena can probably explain this better for me. Quick look at the images appears that the images are somewhat sharper.

Couldn't agree more with you on this thought. Maybe they're going after the folks with expensive glass to justify the announced MSRP of $599, hence I could understand Leica, Contax, ALPA. But then again, Pentax glass isn't cheap either.

I just read about this on RFF ( while researching another mirrorless (Fuji X series) for use with my Pentax primes.

Sounds like a tele-converter in reverse, a 0.7x converter that takes advantage of the smaller flange distance of mirrorless bodies. I see that they have now done a press release and it is now on DPR: Metabones announces 'Speed Booster' lens adapter for mirrorless cameras: Digital Photography Review

Also what looks to be a pre-production review from a photo-blogger:
I've yet to read through the white paper in detail but this is exciting news IMO. The physics of it appears to be legit and sound.

This probably would not be of use with the K-01 but I was always thinking that prior to release of the K-01 that the Pentax mirrorless "System" would comprise of such an adapter or adapters to allow usage of the legacy Pentax lenses on the Pentax mirrorless.
The system would comprise of the body with 2 adapters
- Adapter 1 would maintain the normal 35mm SLR flange distance, hence it would be mainly a spacer between the body and the legacy lens
- Adapter 2 would be this "speedbooster" adapter as detailed in the white paper, hence the 50mm K/M/A/DA lens would become a 35mm on this APS-C mirrorless thereby becoming a "52mm-E" again due to the 1.5x crop of the APS-C (50*0.7*1.5)

One question I have is that is it possible to just make a shorter adapter w/o any optics to get this "reducer" effect? Or do you need the optics to ensure the light ray traces reach the "film" or sensor plane properly?

What do you fellow Pentaxians think? too good to be true?

A step in the right direction for Pentax-Ricoh IMO.

Maybe next step will be the K-MX aka K-02? similar look as the MX with a K mount ILC body? APS-C sensor, smaller distance than K-01 therefore with a K-MX adapter to use the DA/FA/K lenses on it? The brass octagonal body will tug at the nostalgia buffs

Then after that the FF K-DLX?

The market will eventually decide - both in terms of price/value proposition similar to the K-01 and Q which now appear to be gaining some favor due to price reductions.

Is there a thread here that summarizes all the different brands and lens types that we can get adapters for the Q?
It would be good if we can have a reference thread similar to the adapted lens thread solely for adapters and their pros/cons

Pentax's mirrorless strategy

Been away for a long time...... Forgive me if what i'm about to post has already been brought up in this thread.....

Bought the Q via the shopNBC special
I'm still wondering what Pentax's strategy is with regardless to Mirrorless (MILC) but for me $250 compelled me to vote for one - however, the iPhone, iPad mini, and any other camera phone looks to be a good value proposition.

I believe for any photo capture device one has to look at what else is out there in the market including camera phones (Nokia, iPhone, etc....). For any mfg to compete they truly have to look at the addressable market for such a device.

I still wish the K MILC be similar to the EOS-M - that is a new lens to sensor distance (ie smaller than an SLR) with an adapter for legacy lenses. I can't find the thread but recall that prior to the Q or rather NC-1, someone (johnflores maybe?) pointed out the feasibility of making a body with a short registration distance and a K-mount adapter for DA/FA lenses. Body would be compact, new lens family that is compact This would still entail making an investment in new lenses however at least these new lenses would be optimized for compactness while the legacy lenses could still be utlized albeit via an adapter.

Maybe Pentax had in mind with K-01 to eventually release it as a FF as an option since it uses the K-mount registration distance?

When will this be news rather than rumor? I'd love to see the NC-1 in the flesh, which If i read through this enormous thread correctly is a "small" sensor mirrorless interchangeable lens compact. I, however, would like to see an APS-C mirrorless or even something to challenge the micro 4/3 or the s95/lx-5/zx-1 space.

Ricoh GXR-system Full Frame K-mount module

For the right $ I would be interested.
This would be similar to the rumored mirrorless Pentax being discussed currently.

Looks like Ricoh just announced they're making one for leica M-mount lenses - this will compete against the M9/M8 somewhat so i can understand there being a market for them using M-mount.

so why not a K-mount, Nikon-Ai or other mfg's for that matter? - probably a matter of market demand.

The Pentax 110 optical line included a 20-40mm zoom lens: Pentax Auto 110 Variations
Click on "lenses" on right hand side and it will bring you to the page showing the lenses made for the 110. At the bottom is a photo showing how the 20-40 zoom looked like while mounted on the camera - reminiscent of the Nex-3/5 dilemma where the lens overshadow the body size.

There are quite a few "mirrorless" cameras coming - Fuji X10, Oly XZ-1 etc.. It will be interesting what, if any, Pentax comes up with.

While we're wishfully thinking out loud here...

Assuming it will be MILC or EVIL with an APS-C sensor
with the shorter registration distance: (hence lenses will be rangefinder small similar to Leica M mount lenses)
20mm f2 (or f1.8)... this will make it ~31mm equiv (similar to the FA31)
28mm f1.8... this will make it ~ 42mm equiv (similar to the FA43)

2 adapters (no optics in it so I'm not breaking the 2 lens rule )
- for existing Pentax K mount DA and FA primes and zooms
- for existing Leica M mount lenses

with this we can still have the ability to use the DA, FA, and DA-L lenses

and with the 2 lenses above some fast speed lenses for the enthusiasts

Wishfully thinking it will be Full Frame :D, then
again with a smaller registration distance ...
35mm f1.4 (see current Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 for size similarity)
50mm f1.0 (see current Voigtalnder 50mm Nokton)

similar 2 adapters above offering same adaptability to Pentax K, DA, FA and Leica M mount lenses

In either of the above 2 scenarios Pentax/Hoya can capture
-zoom lovers, with the existing DA zooms
-fast prime lovers, with the 2 new lenses
-film body owners wishing for a digital camera to use their legacy lenses on: read Leica owners who don't want to spend 2-3k for a used M8 or 7k for an M9 as well as those of us who have Legacy Pentax film lenses.

Market is ripe IMHO for a compact digital interchangeable lens camera... look at how many M9s are selling (for $7,000!) and the hype around the announced and still non-existent Fuji x100 (expected to sell for $1000!)

So, how's that? 2 optical lenses and non-optical adapters (not a lens so I don't think I broke the rules huh?) and for 2 scenarios.

thx so much for this excellent and enlightening review. I assume you meant Sigma 24/2.8 Ultra Wide II not 2.4...
I also have the Sigma and find the same with regards to color rendition and flare resistance. I'll have to see if I can find my examples to post but then again this thread is more about the Pentax 24/2.
I've been lusting for a 24-35mm equivalent for APS-C and have been debating between the DA15, DA21, and FA24/2. Your review makes me lust even more for the FA24. If not for my poor man's FA24 (Sigma that is...) and the FA24's price my lust will be satiated.

By chance would you be able to comment on the FA24 vs DA21?

Query : Best Pentax DSLR prime lens ?

My choices follow and are based on what I have. Might be different if I had the other choices mentioned here and some that I somewhat lust after (FA Limiteds, and DA Limiteds)

AF: DA40 f2.8
compact, relatively inexpensive, sharp, quick AF, great build.
I do believe it is the epitome of Pentax's concept of high ISO body, small camera and lens.

MF: A50 f1.2
the exact opposite of the DA40 - large and heavy. goes against the high ISO, small camera and lens concept It's large aperture allows for unlimited creativity, and at wide open it has that glow about it. Equivalent to a short portrait on a DSLR - like an FA77?

If I had to choose between the 2 for only 1 it would be the DA40 - but you see, because the DA40 is so compact and light, why not go ahead and bring another lens?

Maybe today's generation of cameras (K-5, K-r) can accurately focus for that shot?

Huh? I've bold italicized items in your post that conflicts. 21mm on APS-C is equivalent to ~31mm FOV for 35mm full frame which agrees with your 2nd sentence.

Maybe you meant "I agree with the argument..." rather than disagree.

However, paperbag makes a very good point for getting the DA15 then cropping to a DA21 equivalent. So maybe the DA15 can really control our minds.
